Road damage audit seeks federal funds

Machias closes one road

MACHIAS, Machias — Mike Hinerman, Washington County’s Emergency Management director, was out and about the county Thursday morning looking at road damage — washouts, erosion and crumbling pavement.

The nonstop rain has irrevocably damaged many county roads and Hinerman is hoping each town will submit an assessment of damage so the county can reach the federal threshold for reimbursement.

“I’m confident we will make it,” he said. The threshold is $100,000 in damage and as of Thursday, with just two towns reporting in, the tally was already at $90,000.

Hinerman said he had notified each of the county’s towns and cities by e-mail to report individual damage. “There is plenty of damage around,” he said. “I saw some just this morning in Machiasport.”

In Machias, the Board of Selectmen voted Wednesday night to close Grove Street to traffic because of water damage, and just a few feet from Hinerman’s office a barricade blocks part of Center Street, where a hole has opened up in the pavement.

Machias Town Manager Betsy Fitzgerald told selectmen that if the county doesn’t meet the $100,000 threshold, the community will have to come up with repair funding.

Hinerman said communities should report damage accumulated from June 19 to July 8 as soon as possible.

Once the threshold is met, Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives will come to Washington County and take a look at the damage.

S T I M U L U S!!!!! Take the 53 Million designated for the most important project in Maine history, the renovation of the Chase bulding and USE IT FOR SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE!!!!!!! It's all about that 3 letter word...J O B S....as Biden said. But wasteful spending is just as bad as no spending. Demand that stimulus money be used for roads and bridges instead of a building renovation. Heck...use what's left over and build a new building.

The drainage system in machias is a mess. Lack of maintaince has left it plugged and colapsed. That is why there is a hole in center street.

STIMULUS to fix roads!!!! Baldacci and his cohorts in Augusta won't let that happen they need that money for Dirig Health!!

You Idiots in Machias would rather spend millions of dollars on walking paths. So stop complaining and WALK.

The roads in Washington county are a disgrace and a real business killer. LilMikey is right on the money, "STIMULUS... use it for something constructive" it will put people to work and encourage economic growth so that new jobs can be created- it's a no brainer!!!

knightcross every comment you post is so negative maybe you should find apital that meets your standards and have them remove the hair acorss your a s s

Knightcross is absolutely right here. 17 million to tear up and fix the railroad beds so ATVers and snowsledders can scream down them and access them from town roads where they create a hazard.

Ever see anybody WALKING on the rail bed around Machias? You take your life in your hands if you do.......

I think I can see why they are openning up the roads to ATV's in the Machias area soon the roads will be so bad a ATV is the only way yo will be able to get around. Just wait till this winter when the snowshelds are going up and down the streets in Machias. ATV's go by our house all the time right now even though we have complained. Nothing gets done! ATV's from East Machias come right down the road to the new trail in Machias. Even though it is still against the law to do so in Machias. But then again what do people in East Machias care about what the laws are in Machias anyway.

For anyone who it may concern, Machias is atleast 10 to 20 minutes from anywhere. Now honestly, I live 14 miles from Machias and work. I don't own a ATV, so does that seem pretty reasonable to WALK to work? I don't think so. From Whiting to East Machias, you need to drive in the middle of the road because the sides are falling away. As for Machias' ATV trails, I was just on them last night with a relative, and met FOUR (4) different groups of people walking! Mind you that was only in a 15 minute spand. If you knew the area, then you'd know the situation. But what do you care, you can drive down your roads, right?

Hey winchester I tell it like it is. You just don't want to hear that Machias would rather spend millions of dollars on walking paths rather then fix their own roads. I don't live in that H_LL HOLE so I don't care. I try to avoid going to Machias as much as possible because the roads are in such bad shape.

Whiting to east machias is prob the worst anywhere, people have lost tires right off their vechicles in east machias. Also court street is a disaster. I for one do enjoy the new trail system and i believe the trails are gonna generate money for the local area. and this is a state trail system not town, i do also agree that a few like any sport will abuse it but im sure the game wardens will handle it just fine. Ive been on the trails several times for long rides and have seen many walkers and mountain bikes and people walking their dogs and have met many atv and it has always been a respectful encounter.

I thought the stimulus money was designated for road/bridge repairs throughout the whole country. If states don't use the money to do what it is designated for, they are going to get SCREWED!! It's federal money and that's what it's supposed to be used for.....

The losers dont need roads up in them there parts !!!!!

That stimulus money Obama promised to repair roads got taken back. The DOT had to cut 75% of thier jobs for the next 2 years. They're only allowed 600 miles of pavement per year. Go to the maine state website, and you'll see the story I am talking about.. and the open/current jobs they will be doing for the next two years. Rt 189 got taken away..and they stopped halfway through the job. No one can afford to fix their vehicles, and no one can afford to pay money in extra tax dollars to have the town fix the roads. I think Mike did a good thing by getting everyone to submit their damages. Hopefully it works!
