BANGOR, Maine — A Gardiner woman was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to three years of probation and ordered to pay nearly $1,400 in restitution for stealing money while working at a Kennebec County post office.

Rachel Marie Walter was indicted by a federal grand jury in March. She pleaded guilty to misappropriation of postal funds while working as the relief postmaster in South Gardiner.

Walter faced up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

She used the $1,390 to pay personal bills, according to court documents.

The theft was discovered in July 2008.

Why aren't any of these people being put in jail and made to pay the higher fines?! Seems everytime you turn around, someone is doing this kind of thing and just getting a slap on the wrist! Gee, I wonder why, they see someone else get off lightly, so no harm, no foul if they do it too! Judges need to to send a message- you WILL pay in regards to the fine/restitution AND JAIL time! These people are thieves, there are NO EXCUSES for this behavior! Steal from one place, can and will steal from another! LOCK THEM UP! I am not suggesting throw away the key. Also get them counceling while they are in there! Making jail time a reality will no doubt, deter others from this stupidity! But then again, some people will never learn!
