BREMEN, Maine — A 19-year-old clammer reported missing Friday morning was found dead Saturday afternoon in a clamming area in Broad Cove that residents call Bug-Tussle.

There is no sign of foul play in the death of Ian Sanborn, who lived in the Waldoboro area, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokeswoman Deborah Turcotte said Sunday.

“There’s no known cause of death at this time,” Turcotte said. “It’s all under investigation.”

Sanborn had been clamming with a juvenile friend when they split up at 7 a.m. Friday. Sanborn “told his friend that he wanted to rest before leaving the area,” according to a Maine Warden Service press release. The friend left and Sanborn stayed behind.

Sanborn’s family reported the young man missing at noon Saturday. Marine Patrol Pilot Steve Ingram found Sanborn’s body close to where he had been clamming with the friend.

Turcotte said the state Medical Examiner’s Office was scheduled to examine Sanborn’s body on Sunday.

The Maine Warden Service, the Maine Marine Patrol and the Maine State Police are investigating the incident.

Kind of strange. I dont think I would have left my friend behind, I would have told him to come with me. Maybe they werent together like that. Maybe they just met there by chance. Sketchy info. Another, stay tuned story.

I hope the family gets the answers they need for some closure. RIP Ian.

Well wishes to family and friends.

Ian was great kid and he will be missed by all that had a chance to know him. On the other side. The kid who left will have to live with the fact that Ian loss could have been prevented by him. These kids including mine own, have grown up on the flats. They know you go in pairs and don't leave the person you came with. Just a quick stop at Ian's mom house which was past when the kid left to say Ian was there, could have prevented this. Instead, two days past before anyone know that Ian was left there. I know this kid is young but I hope himand everyone else learns something from this. My heart goes out the family and all of Ian's friends. As a friend, I will greatly miss Ian.

Am I missing something? Where in this article does it say it could have been prevented if the other gentleman stayed behind? Have you got Obama syndrome and speaking on something you know nothing about? If it is indeed true that the young man who left could have prevented this dont you think he is going through enough without having a bunch of Bangor Daily News, mightier than thou, know alls running there mouth's? My god sometimes you people make me sick. The situation wouldnt be bad enough and the other young man involved just wouldnt feel terrible enough without your comments so please keep it up. We all know none of you have ever made mistakes.

People irishproud? I only see one person saying it could have been prevented. Who might you be speaking of as being mightier than thou? I only see 4 comments ,not including the one im typing, and 2 are mine. For all we know they met there by chance. Im sure BDN will give more info eventualy.

I dont come in here to tear people apart and if you read some of the posts I have left you would see that.

It doesnt pay to be mean. Nice day to all.

ivy04263. Did you miss that whole paragraph he wrote? I apologize if you felt that I was directing my statement to you. I guess I should have been more specific.

I did read the comment, and yes I agree that the young man who left is probably tearing himself up for not making Ian go with him. I cant even begin to imagine what he must feel like.

Thank you for the response,

PS, One question. Are you from Ireland or just irishproud from the US?

I am speaking as a friend of the family and there is more to this story which will hopefully come out. I only pray that for the peace of the family all facts are brought to life on this matter. I stand by the fact, you do not leave a digging partner.

Perhaps the friend had something he had to do or someplace he had to be? Ian was 19 not 90, it sounds like they were off the flats and Ian wanted to take his time. I'm sure the lad feels terrible now, but goodness how would anyone predict a 19 year old friend who wants to nap would die?

So very sad...:( a young man dying much to early in life....My thoughts and condolences to this young person's family and friends......

Very sad this young man's life ended way to soon. My condolences to his family and friends.

all too often we hear of wasted youth. so sad.

My sincerest condolences to the family.

OK, some local needs to explain this to me. I didn't grow up on the coast. Please explain to me what exactly is so dangerous about clamming that it needs to be done in pairs. Do the clams carry little blackjacks and sneak up on people or something? In all seriousness, can someone please explain how not having a clamming partner leads to death on the clam flats?

Sad story with a lot of unanswered questions...peace to the family and to the friend especially.

I have to agree that now is not the time to be lecturing this poor kid ~ I'm sure he's going through a living hell right now. I wish both families peace.

Back to the bar? Thats very original. Thank God your around to make this stuff up. whom ever asked earlier:I was born in south boston to Irish parents. Politics? Telling people to keep the blaming to themselves is not politics. Its just common courtesy. I didnt know about the drug situation and that makes this all the more worse. I stand by my comment that no one should throw there words around for the poor fellow who left to read to read them. If he did something wrong no one knows it better then him and he doesnt need a bunch of strangers throwing it in his face. B- godot you seem a little hostile. How bout a drink?

Jaminjelly, I have seen a honeypot on the flats take a person to their waste. Its kinda like quicksand. I havent been clamming for years but when I did thats what we called them. So its nice to have someone near by. I always went with my boyfriend at the time. Hope that answers your question.

As far as where these 2 young men were, I have no idea so I cant say that they were ON the flats. My guess is they werent, but I dont know.

Well wishes to the family of Ian.

It was not an overdose. The autopys was done on Sunday. It was a drowning. The problem I have is way do you leave a friend on the flats sleeping but carry out and sell his clams. Just common sense and this sounds fishy. I just hope all the facts come out.

hhmmmm ivy. I JUST watched the news, and it is reported that the autopsy is not yet complete. So, I don't know where you got your info from and how you would be privy to such findings before anyone else. The ME was scheduled to examine the body on Sunday...Maybe Mr. Sandborn had a heart condition that no one knew about??...

I thought clamming has been shut off to the state because of red tide??....
