UNITY, Maine — The Maine Arts Camp, formerly known as Bethel Camp for the Arts, announced that it will move its location to the campus of Unity College beginning in the summer of 2010.

Having been at Gould Academy in Bethel for five years, the camp has reached the point where it requires a larger campus with additional needs. Unity College, an environmental college located on 225 wooded acres of farmland overlooking Unity Pond, fills that need, according to camp organizers.

“We are so pleased to begin this association with Maine Arts Camp and exceeding their expectations for our partnership,” said Kate Grenier, Unity College alumni relations and events coordinator. “Our rural campus and green amenities proved to be a good fit for Maine Arts Camp. The campers will be very comfortable and enjoy the varied programming opportunities made possible by access to our campus.”

Maine Arts Camp Director Rick Mades said the move was carefully researched, and he sees great promise from this new partnership.

“We visited six schools and just felt at home at Unity College,” Mades said.

The philosophy of the camp will remain the same, with the mission to provide a noncompetitive, caring environment in which children can explore fine and performing arts, enrichment activities and technology, and sports as part of a small, inclusive community. It is a nontraditional camp geared toward creative children and offering no team sports. Campers create their own schedules, choosing from more than 60 activities.

Maine Arts Camp is an overnight camp offering two- or four-week sessions for children ages 8 to 15. Campers receive personal attention from professional activity instructors and dorm counselors.
