A local man was arrested by Bangor Police at around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, after shoplifting salami, cheese and chocolate milk from Shaw’s on Main Street.

Patrick McCarthy, 27, of Bangor was followed from the store by Shaw’s security down a side street, at which point Officer Tim Shaw arrived on the scene.

When the officer approached, McCarthy sat down on the ground. Shaw asked him twice to stand, but he refused.

“The officer attempted to escort him up and he began struggling,” said Sgt. Chip Hodges of the Bangor Police Department. During the struggle, McCarthy assaulted one of the Shaw’s security officers, Hodges said.

Officer Michael Brennan arrived, and they were able to get McCarthy in handcuffs.

They then searched him and found a package of Bridgford Hard Salami in his pocket.

According to Hodges, McCarthy allegedly had stolen a package of Muenster cheese and had drunk a container of chocolate milk inside the store.

“He still had the salami in his pocket,” Hodges said, “but he had already eaten the cheese.”

McCarthy was charged with theft, assault and resisting arrest.

Two motor vehicle burglaries were reported Wednesday morning to Bangor Police.

A GPS unit was reported stolen from the front seat of an unlocked truck parked on Randolph Drive near the Airport Mall.

The theft was reported at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

According to Sgt. Chip Hodges, the truck had been left unlocked at the same location since Tuesday afternoon.

Police believe the theft happened overnight, though it is possible it happened the previous afternoon, Hodges said.

A pair of iPods and two bank cards also were reported stolen from an unlocked car parked on Birch Street.

The theft was reported at 8:53 Wednesday morning. Police believe the theft occurred overnight.

There were no suspects in either burglary.
