NORTHFIELD, Maine — Jonathan Brock, 21, of Addison was killed Thursday morning when the tractor he was operating plummeted off a wooden bridge over the Machias River in a remote area of Washington County near Holmes Falls.

Brock was coming down an incline and was hauling an empty utility trailer when he apparently lost control, Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Parker said.

The 80-foot-long wooden bridge has small wooden bumpers along its outside edge that were visibly chewed up by the tractor as it left the bridge deck.

As it tumbled off the bridge, the tractor flipped upside down. Rescue workers reported that Brock was pinned upside down under the tractor in about six feet of water. The tractor, a large industrial machine, did not have an enclosed cab.

Parker said it had not been determined yet whether Brock died of drowning or from the impact.

The tractor and utility trailer were owned by Cherryfield Foods and were demolished.

The accident happened just feet from Holmes Falls, a scenic camping and fishing area, which is 13 miles from Route 1 in Columbia Falls and approximately 10 miles from Route 9. Rescue personnel had to travel on rough gravel roads through 7 miles of woods and blueberry barrens to reach the scene.

The accident was reported at about 10 a.m. by a co-worker who was following Brock in a pickup truck. That worker attempted to rescue Brock, but was unable to free him and summoned help.

Members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Marine Patrol, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the Columbia Fire Department, the Cherryfield Foods Hazardous Materials Team and Pleasant River Ambulance responded to the report.

Several law enforcement officers were able to get to the scene quickly because they were at the site of a marijuana eradication and investigation in nearby Township 37.

My thoughts and prayers to this family and his friends.

What a terrible tragedy.

OMG! So sad!

I have been to this site many times with my family. My prayers are with the family and friends of this young man. I think that the picture of the tractor in the water, where his life ended was totally unnecessary, just my opinion.

i agree....no need of it. This poor guys family has been through enough...my heart goes out to all of you.

It is very very sad to be pinned under water.

justanothermainer...I totally agree with you. Thought the same thing when I saw the picture. BDN...really poor taste and lack of compassion in printing and posting that picture.

Prayers got out to family and friends...

I agree with the comments about the picture being posted....Totally in poor taste. Do you really need a picture to go along with the story???

Thoughts and prayers go out to family, friends and co-workers

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I agree about the picture, not very tasteful.

Our sympathies to the family and friends of this young man. So sad...my dad wad also pinned under a tractor for 5 hours. Thankfully he survived although he needed many surgeries. Take care of each other....Peace and blessings...

So very sorry to hear of this tragic accident. Prayers and deepest sympthathy to this young man's family and friends.

No picture came up on my site, just the story.

They took the picture down.

It is pretty bad when the news teams have this posted on the internet before the family is even notified....Get a life BDN!!!!!

3:53 downeast are you serious?

Justanothermainer & downeastah09, I am glad they have removed the picture. Such a tragic accident, for any family, friends and fellow employees to have to deal with, and then to see pictures posted on the BDN site. I cannot imagine what BDN was thinking.. I do thank them for removing the photos, and hope they do not show up in tomorrows paper

condolences to this young mans family

Jon Brock was my boyfriend. He was the greatest guy alive. I can't say much because nothing will bring him back... But here is something I would like everyone to see....

Brock, I love you, I miss you, and even though i'm not a religious person I hope you are looking down on me. I hope that you see how much I love you and how much you mean to me. You made every day perfect. You were my happiness. I can't believe that you were in bed next to me at 6:00 this morning and now you are gone forever. I wish you had stayed home and laid in bed with me all day like you wanted to, instead of going to work. There aren't enough words in the world to describe how we all feel baby. You were one loved person! I don't know what else I can say but I just wanted to let everyone else know how much I love you. We made some good memories that I will always have, but brock, I would much rather have you! :'( I LOVE YOU. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. BUT GREATLY MISSED.

Coral, my heart goes out to you right now and if you ever need someone to talk to just come to my house, you know where I live! Firefly---yes i am completely serious!! BDN posted this around 12 this afternoon. The mother had not even been told at that point. It's sickening......Jonathon was a very well liked and loved boy....he always could turn a bad situation into a good one....always had a smile......he will be sadly missed so much, by so many people.......Coral, Michelle, and all the rest of his family my heart goes out to all of you....kathy

It's 10:02 p.m. on the 24th and the picture are here... they must have put them back up.

OMG!! what tragic news.. such a young life lost.. my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of John. I agree that the picture and or story should not have hit the news until all family especially his mother was contacted.. how ignorent of BDN very unconsiderate. i notice that a couple of people ha mentioned that the picture was removed. however when i came on this site not one but three pictures showed up.. what is wrong with BDN one wasnt sufficient? they had to post 2 more? come on people have a heart. There are alot of people hurting because of this. imagining what happened would be bad enough but to look at picures to associate it is even worse. especially the one with it still in the water starting to be moved..... again. my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time of sorrow.

This is just sick. Bad enough to read this sad new, but also to see that BDN had put those damn pictures back on. Come one .......dump the pictures.....the family need not be haunted with that as well.

This is a terrible tragedy but I don't understand the uproar over the pictures. Don't we see crash scenes on a regular basis in the paper? There is no deceased person in the photo, just a tractor in the river. I think BDN is getting a bad rap on this one.

so very sad for the family. our prayers are with the family

A gentle young man has left this world too soon. Now he sits at the feet of our savior in peace. God bless you my brother and friend; see you soon.

freedomfighter: If this was your loved one would you want to see these pictures? I'm VERY disappointed at the BDN right now.

This is around the area where the guys froze to death one winter isn't it???????They got caught in a big snow storm and got stuck. What a sad way to go. Such a remote area too, lucky if someone comes by in a day or so. This guys relatives and friends must be devastated...

That photgraph is vulgar in it's insensitivity. Mr. Brock's loved ones are suffering enough. That photo doesn't add one thing to the story; it exploitative sensationalism!!!

freedomfighter, Re-read the article?????? Does this picture have to be posted?? As I mentioned in a past post, this is tragic news for this fine young mans family, as well as his friends and co-workers. Have a heart BDN, or get a life!!...In this particular case, (trapped under) dump the pictures!!!

Thoughts and prayers to all his family & friends. R.I.P Jonathan

When the photograph was taken, Mr. Brock's body had been removed more than an hour earlier. As the caption states, the photo depicts the recovery of the machinery only.

anything to sell a paper. no need whatsoever to put that picture on here, what r these people thinking. very sad story and my hearth goes out to you coral, even though i did not know you. the bdn has been out of control trying to sell papers lately with their stories and photos. have a hearth bdn.

i feel the same as most on here. the article about the accident was written well and you could just imagine in your mind what happened.. The pictures are a little over board. its bad enough for the family and friends of this young man to sit adn imagine what happened, let alone seeing pictures to show exactly what happened. get a life BDN this is NOT right.

Such a tragic accident, to such a lovable person.Broc was a very important part of my family...and he will be greatly missed.Every Friday afternoon I could count on him calling me for a game of texas holdem poker at my house Friday nights. My heart goes out to Coral, whom was his girlfriend that he loved very much and he was very proud of their relationship together. He was so excited to turn 21 years old on the 15th of September, which was also my birthday, and we were all going to the Hollywood Slots together...but so sad to say we never got there.A big part of me went with Broc,,He was like a brother to me and we were very close..I will greatly miss him calling and coming over on Fridays.Until we meet again Broc, I love you and will always remember the good times we shared.

Here is goes with a controversial post. We all have no problem seeing celebrities bodies in body bags, or people in urban areas being hauled off after shootings, but when it hits close to home, we all have a bird. I think we all need to view the world from the perspective of our hometowns. Yes, this was a sensitive picture to post; however, as long as we post photos of car crashes and burned homes, you can not justify the removal of the photo from the site. Let's not desensitize ourselves to the world. Think 9/11; do you have an image of the buildings after being hit? Was it on the front of papers all over the world the next day? Now, remember the thousands of lives that were lost. Such tragedy often brings increased awareness. To those of you who are justifying your position on this photo by saying that the family had yet to be informed: have you stepped back for a moment to question the efficiencies of the Maine State Police? Surely, they did not act in a timely fashion if the BDN was able to post on its site before the family was notified. A simple dispatch of a uniformed officer and his/her commanding officer would have sufficed.

This was a tragic accident, yes. The family will no doubt be in an extraordinary state of mourning, yet will soon find peace knowing that this young man will be in peace. I sympathize with the family. No one should die an unexpected death, without being able to say any goodbyes or being able to settle anything in his or her life. May the family and the young soul find peace at this time.

A good Maine kid killed doing an honest days work, how heartbreaking. Love and prayers from our family to his.

And as for the picture, Jesus..do people really need to see that? Ghoulish, BDN.

BDN Such poor taste "Picture" Come on "Do we really need to see that"? Poor kid sorry to hear about such a tragedy.

(From the BDN article) Members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Marine Patrol, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the Columbia Fire Department, the Cherryfield Foods Hazardous Materials Team and Pleasant River Ambulance responded to the report.

jonebigtime, don't see the State Police listed here as responding to the incident, why did you find it necessary to beat up on them. Up until that point you write a very well thought out post and I couldn't agree with you more.

I think the BDN is trying to point out the fact (with the picture) that this is an 80 ft long bridge that has no SAFETY RAILS, and that if it had, this poor boy would still be alive. Not one person has complained about that fact. Maybe you all are used to driving across bridges without rails, but I for one am petrified of bridges and heights in general and would've had something done about it ages ago, I don't care how remote or untraveled it is.

opinionated, good point.

Tractors are notorious for bad handling and rollover accidents. If Cherryfield Foods had installed a simple roll-bar and a seat-belt, this poor guy might be in the hospital with cuts and bruises. Instead, he's in the morgue. Why aren't commercial tractors equipped with the most basic, inexpensive safety devices?

Well Harry I think a seat belt would been the last thing he needed here, but yes newer equipment are equiped with seat belts.

As disturbing as this accident is the picture tells the story better than the article. I hope the man's family can take solice in the fact that some safety measures may be instituted because of this and another life may eventually be saved. More modern machines do have basic safety items such as seat belts and or rollover protection but would probably not have worked in this worst case scenerio. Too high a fall and possible drowning implications. Ironically, many operators don't use the seat belts. I watched a simiIiar tractor roll over with the driver jumping off just in time. He is alive because no seat belt was worn with no rollover protection. I would suspect speed was a big factor along with the possiblity of brake malfunction. Farming can be a dangerous occupation. My condolences to the family.

So sorry, koraljellison, so very sorry for your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you and Jonathan's family.

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN THIS REALLY TRAGIC TIME...YOU ARE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS....

Telefunken, The seatbelt works when it's used in conjunction with the roll bar or a roll cage. The roll bar protects the seat area, and the seatbelt keeps the operator within that seat area. Each without the other, won't do the trick, but used together, they can keep the operator from being crushed. It's just like a well built car, the strong frame can't protect you if you're throw out the window or door.

I'm surprise that rollover protection isn't required by OSHA. Maybe it's another of those agricultural exemptions left over from the days of the family farm.

My John Deere states that if roll bar is up, use seat belt. If roll bar is down so not use it. This tractor looks to be a older version before they started putting them on. If he had a roll cage and a seat belt yes there is a possibility he may of made it. I remember we use to cross this river before the bridge was put in, had to wait until the water went down enough to drive across it when the road was washed out. Also use to be good bass fishing just down stream in the spring of the year.

Yes, that's why I said "a simple roll-bar and a seat-belt" might have saved him. The roll bar can only protect you if you're in the seat.

If I'm upside down in the water trying to unbuckle the belt, at least I have a fighting chance.

Key if you use both, I still get complacent from time to time and use the roll bar only or use neither... Have yet to use my seat belt. And yes I know I should..

How do you know that the tractor didnt have a roll bar and a seat belt. Because I believe that it did.

My prays are with the family and friends. This tractor did have a rollbar I believe. Cherryfield Foods does not use tractors without them. This tractor was on the Channel 5 news when they recovered it from the accident site. Check it out and you can see the roll bar on it.

Well there you go.. It is hard to tell from this photo...

Bunny123, you may be right. I had enlarged the big photo (click Ctrl + in Firefox) and didn't see one, but it may have been crushed or displaced by the fall from the bridge and be out of view. That's a long fall, and I think they're designed for rollovers to the back or side.

Long fall and rocky....

I apologize for the mistaken involvment of the MSP. I assumed that with such an incident, it would have been natural for them to have been involved. With the same point redirected, one must step back and look at this objectively- did the law enforcement agencies act efficiently in notifying the family? In a typical investigation, law enforcement stays tight-lipped until the appropropriate people are involved. Regardless of the law enforcement agency, the response and relay of this terrible news was amateur at best.

Please send thoughts and prayers to his co-worker who was following this tractor and could not save his friend. He could only call for help which was not able to get there quick enough. This is a terrible tradegy for all parties concerned.

It seems like a nightmare that I can't wake up from. I will never forget the memories of Brock. His laughter, his smile, the games of magic the gathering that lasted hours . Im sure the "crew" won't ever forget Brock. God must have needed very special angel. Brock you are loved and missed. Rest in peace see you again someday ~Kendra

The picture is still up on the site, very ruthless for BND to do that, get your schit together BND, take an Ethics class or something simular.

Koral, Kendra and Jonathans family so sorry to hear of your loss, my thoughts and prayers will be with you! May you take comfort in knowing he is with God now....

koraljellison, what you wrote is beautiful.

To Jon's family and friends, know there are people out here who care what happened to Jon and that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this painful time.

My daughter lost the love of her life in a car accident this past spring and it is still painful. She has already endured the 4th of July and his birthday and I can see she is slowly coming to terms with it. You will too. From what is being said about Jon by people who knew him, I think he would not want you to hurt as badly as I am sure you do.

This picture is what it is. It is out there and it can't be taken back. When my daughter's friend was killed they published a picture in our local paper showing firefighters put out the flames. Everyone in our community knows that his remains were not removed until after the fire was well out, so even though discreetly obscured by smoke, we all knew that the victim was still in the wreck.

tesseract2 thanks for your prayers for the co-worker. The co-worker did try to help Jon and I just can't imagine going thru watching such a thing happen. So helpless in a situation like this. He didn't think twice about jumping into that water to try to do something. He is gonna relive this scene over and over in his mind I can imagine and I feel extremely bad about that. I just saw Jon at Mathews store this wk full of energy and life... He was excited to end his work day and go to be with his girlfriend. Michelle, Koral and friends and family, please know that Jon was loved by many people and you will see him again... He is looking on you all now as he is on his co-worker. God bless. Luv berta

I cant beleive they put the picture back up. I think everyone should cancel their subscriptions to the BDN....I know I am going to!

It's just a tractor, people.

I am feeling sad

The BDN has removed some of the photos (and I say photos because there was three) and I also agree with the comments that this is indeed a very dangerous bridge. My toes curl every time I've had a ride or walk over it. The area up there is a beautiful place, and I'm so sorry for the family and friends and coworkers who are going thru this horrible time.

Maybe when Sharon Kiley Mack loses someone someone she loves the other newspapers will put pictures of the location and equipment that caused her loss on the front page! Have a heart, take the pictures off!

wow. its just a picture of a tractor, folks...while we're at it, lets tear down the bridge, too..

RIP Jon Brock. We'll miss you. Sorry Brandon for having that type of call for service.

(((((((Koral))))))) My thoughts are with you in this unimaginably hard time. Sending peace and healing thoughts to you. I am so very sorry.

sed1980

Or maybe rebuild the bridge, or put rails up to prevent another horrific accident.

Raysgirl, get a life this poor man wasn't out speeding and raising hell trying to impress his friends,he was working hard to support his family. How dare you compare this tragic fatal accident to a dumb kids speeding and carelessness. My heart goes out to all the family and friends of this young man may god help you through this awful time.

Thank You everyone that had decent things to say. Brock would be very happy to see this positive turn out of such a bad bad thing. * You are greatly missed. I love you.* - Koral
