Milo ed tech charged in teen alcohol case

BROWNVILLE, Maine — An education technician at Penquis Valley High School in Milo was charged earlier this week with furnishing liquor to a minor.

Suzanne Russell, 30, of Brownville is expected to make her initial appearance Nov. 16 in 13th District Court in Dover-Foxcroft.

Brownville Police Chief Nick Clukey said Thursday the charge stems from a motor vehicle stop that occurred at 11 p.m. Aug. 29 on Main Road in Brownville.

He said Brownville police Officer Bruce Graybill stopped a vehicle driven by Roy Hathorn, 25, of Brownville because it had no plate light. During the stop, Graybill saw two youths, ages 16 and 17, and an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle, according to Clukey.

Clukey said Graybill confirmed that one of the juveniles, a girl, had been drinking and she was immediately summoned for possession of liquor by a minor. In addition, Hathorn was charged with furnishing liquor to a minor, furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol, and for having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. The other juvenile, a male, had not been drinking, Clukey said.

Hathorn’s girlfriend, Suzanne Russell, also was a passenger in the vehicle, Clukey said. She was not charged that night but information came out recently that the alcohol the minor was drinking had been purchased by Russell, he said.

Clukey, the primary investigator, said he found that Russell had bought hard lemonade at a local store earlier on the evening of Aug. 29 and had given it to the juvenile. After the alcohol was purchased, the foursome went to a camp north of Brownville, he said. Hathorn and his passengers were returning home when his vehicle was stopped, Clukey said.

SAD 41 Superintendent Michael Wright could not be reached Thursday afternoon for comment.

Check out all of the My Space pages for the Ed Techs, bus drivers, coaches, etc. No MORALITY clause. NONE whatsover. Be ashamed, be very ashamed.

Funny how the article does not mention if she is related to the kids or if she has known them personally for some time. Either way, it's wrong- but there is a difference if she isn't and just "hangs out" with her students and gets them drunk.

I do not condone her behavior, but in regards to the last comment.... Penquis Valley is a grade 7 through grade 12 school. She works in the 7-8 section, so it is my understanding that these were not students she had daily interactions with.

I'm shocked.

Is this the best news that brownville police dept can come up with. To think that the police chief would call the bangor daily news to report this, makes me think that he has to much free time on his hands and maybe he should get out and do some real police work. Then maybe he will have some real crimes to report. Why would anyone report this other than to get there name in the newspaper. Well heres another one for your scrapbook Nick.

There are things that teachers do not and cannot do and most understand and accept that before they become teachers. I would lose most respect if this was one of my childrens teachers. She put herself into a position to be a role model to an overwhelming number of our youth. On a more human level; if she was not a teacher- this story would not have been writen. I, myself, have been the "cool" older cousin that was old enough to buy beer. (Now I feel old!)

dollarbob, there is a thing called a scanner and lots of people have one and report to the BDN these types of stories. There is every reason for this to be written up in the newspaper. An Ed tech supplying alcohol to minors regardless of their relationship is wrong on so many levels.

I know all about the scanners, I have a dozen of them but i will bet you that Nick has Diana Bowley phone number programed in at the top of his speed dial. What was nick doing when he was 16 or 17 years old. and you never hear about all the under age girls that he hangs out with in Brownville in the Bangor daily news do you.

The situation sounds like the ed tech was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her boyfriend was charged with three counts on that night when she was not charged with anything, until Nick came up with a good story for the paper weeks later.Unfortunatly the ed tech is loosing her job from hear say and now in a small community has to listen to the snickers and rumors that Nick so generously gave to the public. She hasn't even been to court what happened to innocent until proven guilty. Way to go chief!!

Whoops should of done a spell check ," Cheif" Clukey you should be more careful how you tell stories that ruin reputations and cause people to loose jobs they work hard for unlike you and other very young officers that (hang out) with young kids maybe someone will start rumors in the paper and jeopordize your job!

never mind the grammer its 4:30 am!!!!!!!

This police officer was doing his JOB!!! How dare some of you make excuses for something that was TOTALLY illegal for this teacher to do. When teachers take their positions, they are given very clear instructions as to what is, and is not acceptable to do with their students. I'm not certain at all, that this incident was reported by the officer himself, there are many people who have scanners, and reporters are on the lookout for police news all the time. When asked for the specifics on a case, officers give general information concerning what happened, as that too, is part of their job.

If this officer does anything illegal with underage teen girls, then that too will be looked into. Hanging out and not participating in any illegal behavior is perfectly acceptable. Police officers have a duty to be role models for youths, just like the rest of the adults.

I know for a fact that Clukey new his own cops were messing around with young girls and when someone confronted him he threaten to arrest them. He cant take the heat. Nothing but a PUNK

Let me start by naming a few last names that should be investigated for alcohol incidents involving minors: Clukey, Russell, Hathorn, Lovejoy, Royal, Brown, Henderson, Washburn, Clark, Morrill, Herbest, McLeary, Smart, Murray, Knapp.........the list goes on.

So much for teacher trust!

JohnDeereGreen is right on the money.

Come on do we really want Ed Tecs serving booze to our kids. Every thing the chief presented is public record and the public should know if some one is harming our kids. If he didnt report it and I found out then I would be upset.

I realize this isn't about the "ed tech" but I would just like to say to JohnDeereGreen that you have placed my name on this list where there are supposed minors drinking and I am pretty sure that there hasn't been. As a matter of fact, your list seems to be nothing more than a bash list for a specific group of people. Remember when you point the finger at us...there are 3 pointing back at you! Do I have minors at my house, yes I do. It is a sad day when someone can't provide a place for teenagers to hang out (besides on the street)...with my teenage children...without being accused of partying and drinking with them. Not every house with a radio playing and a group of people having a good time means it is a party! Unless you have been at my house supposedly drinking with these minors and have proof of this so called partying with minors...stop bashing the rest of us. I am tired of everyone assuming they know what goes on at my house. These stories get started by people like you and give innocent people a bad rap. Don't ASSUME...it makes an ASS-(out of)-U-(and)-ME. I believe AMAZED had it right when they stated..."Hanging out and not participating in any illegal behavior is perfectly acceptable". Unless you want to reveal who you are and PROVE your allegations...try barking up another tree. I am sorry if you dont think an adult cant have minors at their house without illegal activities going on. If you have a problem with me partying or drinking...I am 34 and it doesn't really concern you.
