Columbia man collapses during County hunting trip

ST. AGATHA, Maine — A Washington County man who was in the area on a moose hunting trip died Friday morning after apparently suffering a heart attack shortly after the excursion began.

State Police Trooper Dan Marquis said Friday afternoon that William Wright, 57, of Columbia was hunting with his son and a friend, both of whom were in their 30s.

Marquis said the hunters saw a moose in the field near the Flat Mountain Road. After parking the truck, the trio devised a hunting plan.

“He [Wright] went to cross the field,” said Marquis. “His son and the friend went in the other direction.”

A short time later, the two men came back.

“They got to the field and saw that he [Wright] had collapsed right there,” the trooper said.

The men called for an ambulance and attempted CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“He was declared dead when the ambulance arrived,” said Marquis, adding that the body was not transferred to the local hospital.

Marquis said police considered the death unattended, as Wright had a heart condition that likely contributed to his death.

The body will not be taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta for an autopsy.

Marquis, who responded to the scene just after 8 a.m., was assisted by six wardens from the Maine Warden Service.

The St. Agatha Ambulance Department also responded to the scene.
