ST. AGATHA, Maine — A Washington County man who was in the area on a moose hunting trip died Friday morning after apparently suffering a heart attack shortly after the excursion began.

State police Trooper Dan Marquis said Friday afternoon that William Wright, 57, of Columbia was hunting with his son and a friend, both of whom were in their 30s.

Marquis said the hunters saw a moose in the field near Flat Mountain Road. After parking the truck, the trio devised a hunting plan.

“He [Wright] went to cross the field,” said Marquis. “His son and the friend went in the other direction.”

A short time later, the two men came back.

“They got to the field and saw that he [Wright] had collapsed right there,” the trooper said.

The men called for an ambulance and attempted CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“He was declared dead when the ambulance arrived,” said Marquis, adding that the body was not transferred to the local hospital.

Marquis said police considered the death unattended, as Wright had a heart condition that likely contributed to his death.

The body will not be taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy.

Marquis, who arrived at the scene just after 8 a.m., was assisted by six wardens from the Maine Warden Service.

The St. Agatha Ambulance Department also arrived at the scene.

Prayers for this mans family...

Prayers for the family and friend.

prayers go out to the family and friends

To Ann, Shannon, Bobby and all those that knew and loved Billy. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. He will be greatly missed. It just isn't going to be the same around here anymore. I am glad that he was doing something he loved doing but wish that God hadn't decided to take him now. He works in strange ways but he has a reason for the things that he does, even though we might not always agree with him. If there is anything I can do...please let me know.

Damn, that sucks. I used to like working on the fire ground with him. My thoughts to the family.

I don't know Billy but I certainly hope that his family can find solace in the fact that he was doing something he liked and he didn't suffer through months and years of fighting to live and beat cancer or some similar painful and debilitating ailment. It's always hard to lose a loved one and the shock of a sudden loss is incredible. One thing that is harder is to watch a loved one lose his or her quality of life over a period of time. To the Wrights, you have my deepest sympathy in this time of your loss. Celebrate Billy's life, relive the good times through memories. It'll help you get through the hard times.

AS I SEE IT, by Mainer Mike Brown

At least he died doing something he enjoyed.

My prayers with the family........ I hope he died doing something he absolutely loved :-)

BDN makes it sound like Moose hunting is somewhat responsible; anything to push their agenda. Thoughts and prayers to all involved...

Thats too bad...condolenses to the family

Rogue_Wave, your anti-BDN agenda is wearisome. The BDN accurately reported the sad fact that this gentleman unfortunately died while out moose hunting. I join you and the others in offering my condolences to his family and friends.

All Im saying is that the title, like many, is not hunter-friendly. Its an obvious attempt to draw readers in because it sounds like something might have happened. Someone died and its horrible, Moose hunting in no way was a vessle for this misfortune.

A very sad story, sorry for you loss.

On another note, what the heck ; "Marquis, who arrived at the scene just after 8 a.m., was assisted by six wardens from the Maine Warden Service"

Six wardens--the warden service dosnt have much to do.

God bless this man and his family.....

It used to be that only a medical doctor could pronounce a person dead. I wonder when that law changed?
