Orland man found guilty of terrorizing

ELLSWORTH, Maine — An Orland man has been convicted in Hancock County Superior Court of threatening to kill another man.

Chad Saunders, 27, was found guilty Wednesday, the day after his trial began. The jury, after deliberating for a total of more than four hours Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, found Saunders guilty of three of the four charges he was facing.

The jury convicted Saunders of domestic violence terrorizing, criminal use of explosives and possession of a machine gun. Saunders was acquitted of a charge of criminal threatening, according to court documents.

The charge of criminal use of explosives essentially translates into an allegation that Saunders illegally possessed explosives, according to Deputy District Attorney Carletta Bassano. Saunders was not accused of actually blowing up anything with the explosives.

A sentencing date for Saunders has not yet been set, according to documents on file in Superior Court. He is being held without bail at Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth until his sentencing.

According to police, Saunders allegedly pointed a handgun at another man on Oct. 30, 2008, at a home on Upper Falls Road in Orland. A week later, Saunders verbally threatened to shoot the same man at the same location. Police found explosives and a machine gun at the house after going to the house on Nov. 7, 2008.

Saunders was acquitted of the alleged Oct. 30 incident.

Saunders’ defense attorney, Matthew Foster of Ellsworth, did not return a voice mail message left at his office Wednesday afternoon.

According to court documents, Saunders resisted efforts to be psychologically evaluated so that such an evaluation could be considered as the state weighed the charges against him. Saunders repeatedly refused to talk to mental health professionals, who eventually decided there was no reason to conclude that he wasn’t compe-tent to stand trial, the documents indicate.

Bassano said Wednesday that Saunders is a military veteran but that she does not know whether he saw any combat while in the service. She said the issue of whether Saunders saw combat never came up in the court proceedings involving his case.

another trial and waste of the tax payers money, glad he didn't have the psych eval, the state would have paid, actually the taxpayers would have.......enjoy you new 4 x8 cell, hope is not comfortable.....loser

It's easy to sit back and pass judgment and make uninformed comments about someone. I am personally involved in this case and the short note written here in the paper doesnt even scratch the surface. This was and is a family matter that went to far. Never should have reached the courts if the family member who was threatened had handled it like he should have. The only loser in this case is the one threatened and the ones who like to make comments on things they know nothing about.

well alot news here i see,, well this is my son and yes alot wasnt said about this all, and whoever feels let him enjoy his cell well will see if he gets there,, but think one thing ok he served our coutry x2 over in iraq front front line and not one of us walked in this kids shoes,, when he lost alot of his unit,, friends and alot around him and i am sure he isnt the only kid that got back and had noone talk to him about anything about waht he did, saw and took care of while over there and got back,, and got out of the us marnies,, so all in the world can say what they want about this kid,, still only a kid at 27 years old but till you have a son or daughter that did war and was all most lost over there and truck was hit going to airport on way out of there to be flown home,, then keep your mouth shut,, he may of had things he shouldnt yes but did he blow up anything no,, and were they brought back on our planes? guess we may never know or was it all over sight on our goverment? So maybe alot of differnt people ought to be gone instead of a kid that hopefully will get help this isnt over yet and hope some of you eat your words,, and hope you all are never a parent and never walk in my shoes as a mother,, I am a loveing mother of my son and will never forget whe he did at war,,,, and will stand behind him 100%,, and like i said time will tell right,so just remember one time you all hes a vertan and be proud of them all,, see i work with them everyday,,,,,,,,,,,,his mother

you people have got to be kidding me,we r talking about one of our own who obviously is reaching out and we have nothing positive to say and u wanna see this man and his family suffer even more, during viet-nam we werent there for our soldiers,we can be there for them now.we have all the channels to follow and places for them to go,and prison isnt the answer.lend a hand to our fellow man.he fought for us and we need to fight for him and his family.I know this mans mother personally and can trell you the grief she is feeling.so liten up people and have some feelings here.

I too am the mother of a soldier who has served 3 full tours in Iraq. I was lucky, in that he came home physically intact and mentally intact..However, not all of our soldiers do..So, for all of you passing judgment on this young man who bravely, loyally and honorably served our country overseas twice, whether you agree with us being over there or not..try to put yourself in their shoes. If you have not experienced being in a war zone 24/7, then you cannot possibly understand what it does to ones mind over time. I also know the family very well, and am good friends with them. Chad was friends with both of my boys..they all hung out together as teenagers. This could be your child who is going through this. You may want to really think about what you write in these comment sections, because who knows..next week it could be your child in here for whatever the reason. What parent thinks they will have a child grow up, go to war and come home a totally different person than when they left. It happens to so many of our soldiers. He needs help, and I do believe with the proper help, that over time he will be able to have a happy life, a productive life like everyone else..but it;s going to take time. How about some compassion instead of criticism. If you didn;t know him or know the family personally, then how can you possibly make any comment at all. It always amazes me that people do this without knowing all the facts, not just what you read in the newspapers. The family is going through alot right now..just be glad that your world is so perfect..evidently it is, or you wouldn;t be writing such ignorance. It's so easy to sit back and pass judgment on someone you know nothing about personally. Get the facts first. My heart goes out to his parents, whom I have known for years and years. This has not been an easy road for them, but one day, I do believe they will have their son back..the son he was before going to war. To his parents..you are both wonderful people, and were fantastic parents..you did nothing wrong...it;s not about that, and people who know you and love you know this already. Stay strong and be there for him..time heals all wounds. He is product of war, period. Some come back and function fine, others do not. I'm guessing that none of you who have made negative comments have ever had a loved one go to war and come back damaged. If that was the case, you would not have commented as you did. Love, and God Bless to his family.

Whatever this situation is, thank you for your service, Mr. Saunders.

Here's a thought, maybe he should take the help that as a country we offered him. Hard to help someone that doesn't want the help. Like the old saying says, you lead a horse to water but you can make him drink. Well you can offer him help, but if he doesn't take it how is that anyone's fault but his own?? I am very thankful for our service men and women, but that doesn't give them a free pass either. He should get the help he obviously needs. Untill then the court system needs to do there job and keep hin from hurting anyone. Not like they can just set him free and hope nothing like this happens again.

His Momma really needs a dictionary. Great example!
