$500 ...are you serious? I empathize with the daughter. A victim typically assumes that they are the only one, and there is "no need" to tell anyone. So sad, but yet true. This sick man needs to be imprisoned for the rest of his natural life. There is not another solution for him not abusing another. I truly believe that Kevin Stitham is one of these corrupt judges and I have felt his wrath for the past ten years. His son is a known drug dealer. There is a swell of voices telling the law enforcerment community that the protection of children deserves more attention. Why isn't that message getting through? Sex Offenders' sentences are too light, too short, and of little consequence. They are back on the streets in a short time because the short sentences are frequently "suspended" and made even shorter. One must wonder why that is so. Would it be that the mostly-male enforcement and legal community underestimates the emotional, psychological, and physical damage done to victims? Time for a change! How many more damaged or dead children must there be?

The problem is that in a small town, the girls would no doubt see that man many places, many times. And if they are bright enough to understand how our justice system works, they might understandably be afraid that he would be back amongst them on the streets, and be justifiably afraid of that happening.

Kevin Stitham is corrupt...Mr. Brown was one of my top 5 teachers I had in school. Yeah I knew he liked to do "fun stuff" now and then like drink or hunt or hang out with his friends, like all of us do to relax, but what Stitham did and blamed it all on him is a disgrace. Maybe more, yes MORE can be done by mom and dad at home, to discuss their son's or daughter's activities, and pay more attention as to where they go and when. Don't tell me that some neighbor or someone overhearing this man's discussions or references, did not have an awakening of sorts, when he alluded or saw girls coming and going with him or out of his house, or from the backroom of where he worked so often. Dover-Fox is a small town. It is difficult to believe there were not others who noticed suspiciousness about what was going on all those years.

Our firm, last year, prosecuted, a US citizen who was in a foreign country for the same set of circumstances. He said he began his "interest" on the Internet, seeing young preteens wearing scanty underwear, engaging in video sex acts and posing in provocative poses, etc. Nice beginning for the kids and for adults combined. This may go further than just a local situation.

I'm guessing the bail was set so low because he takes care of his mentally ill wife who is house-bound. What I don't know is, is she the mother of the daughter who was molested and if so, what a scumbag she is for staying with him all these years!

I forgot to add....I have taken my boys to Mr. Denbow for the past 15 years for haircuts. He always treated them very well. He always gave them lollipops and was very sociable; remembering their likes, dislikes, hobbies, etc. I never felt any sort of sixth sense that this man was anything more than a sweet old man. I was horrified to learn of what he has done and the story seems to get worse day by day, now with the daughter sharing her story with the BDN. I have tought my youngest boys (5) about stranger danger/sex offenders/kidnappers, etc. When I first read what he had done, I asked them if they thought the man who cuts their hair is a nice man and they both responded with enthusiastic "yesses" . I then told them they he had hurt girls and the police had arrested him because he is a bad man who secretly hurts children. The look of horror on their faces was immediate and some may think that I should have sheltered them from this information. For me, though, it seems to have finally hit home the point I have been trying to get across to both of them that sometimes the nicest people are bad, bad people and that you must always be aware of this and keep yourself safe. I hope he gets a longer jail sentence than the first time he offened and hope that he just doesn't move to another state and start over again when he gets out.

OBVIOUSLY you don't know me or my history.

I am not indifferent to the susceptibility of young people to sexual predators due to their young ages and inexperience in life. In fact, I think I've already said as much in a different post. Young people are targeted by all kinds of abusive entities such as drug dealers, gang leaders, the military, banking institutions, television....the list is endless. Young people are the preferred target for all kinds of evil things.

To address your comment a bit more specifically; you are correct. I was never sexually abused. I was, however, propositioned once; and offered compensation. At a very young age too incidentally. I recall the instant feelings of repulsion and disgust. The very thought of engaging in the act this MAN suggested nearly made me physically ill. In retrospect, I should have deployed my boy scout knife and eviscerated him on the spot. Being young and timid I didn't.

Over the years I have wondered; and perhaps this helps me understand. If my potential abuser had been, say....someone along the lines of Raquel Welch perhaps I would have succumbed. For that matter maybe I'd have been a willing and able repeat 'victim' to the tune of 'hundreds of times'. It's difficult to presume I suppose.

I'm simply stating that there are varying circumstances that take place before the molesting happens which factor into the entire ordeal such as: age, food, shelter, clothing, etc... the basic necessities of life, perhaps lack of love, or maybe the molester raped the child first and then coerced her into accepting money and told her that as long as she took his bribe he would not tell her parent (s) what she did. Making the child think the whole ordeal was of her doing and making her shameful or fearful. That puts the molester in control of everything that happens until finally, he/she is revealed or until the molester or the child finally ends it. I think that if you could sit in a courtroom and listen to some of these stories, you would be shocked.

They didn't run away because a pedophile doesn't simply walk up out of the blue and say, "Hey, wanna have sex with me for money?" A pedophile grooms his victims. He becomes their friend and confidant. He tries to gain their trust and sympathy. He crosses the line a little at a time, leaving young victims confused. Kids always think everything is their fault -- a parent's drinking or divorce, for example. Once abuse has occured, they feel guilty and wonder what it is about them that made this awful thing happen. And the pedophile knows all this and plays on that guilt and shame to keep the kid quiet. What you call a "girl like that" is a victim. And attitudes like yours are part of what victimizes them. How do I know? I grew up here being that girl, judged for acting out but with no grown up ever thinking to wonder why I was acting out. And my abuser once "paid" me by sending me to an ice cream stand with money for drinks for the rest of the household but a fried chicken dinner for myself. I obediently purchased everything I had been told to, threw the chicken dinner in the trash can, and returned with the drinks for everyone else. There are many who establish relationships with victims first, who groom the kids and manipulate the situation in such ways that the kid ends up feeling that there is no way out and no one to turn to. After one encounter where you were not touched but were offered money in exchange for sex with an adult, you are still so shaken you wish you had gutted the guy in retrospect? Think how these young women feel, and how shaken they are, after their encounters. They were afraid it was their fault. They were afraid they nobody would believe them. They were afraid even if someone did believe them, they would be blamed. They were afraid people would look at them and treat them differently. They were children and they were afraid...get it?

The $500 cash bail is probably the 10% that had to be posted for his release thus making the bail an original $5000. Still too low though.

Sexual predators....let me rephrase....sociopathic predators of any kind are evil and VERY MANIPULATIVE. They are cunning and intelligent at least as it suits their objective.

As a parent I am an advocate of children. I agree with practically every post on this thread to the extent that old letch, and every pedophile like him, receive the punishment they so richly deserve.

Children today, unfortunately, aren't as well prepared for evil as children in the past were. One of the reasons my potential abuser never succeeded was because I was taught better. I went to church. I didn't watch MTV or any else of the constant flow of SEWAGE that is pumped in to children's heads via TV that's available these days. I was a scout. I spent time outdoors making my own fun instead of playing explicit video games. I WORKED and was productive (not necessarily by choice) because my old man insisted I work. I had a set of values instilled in me by parents who cared enough to instill them. I instinctively KNEW what that jerk had in mind was WRONG. Nobody had to tell me and I didn't have to think about it.

I'm not necessarily slamming parents either. There are a lot of good parents fighting an uphill battle with a society in decline. America is rotting from the inside out and we are all victims in one way or the other.

I fished, camped, hiked, hunted. I worked in the woods, around our yard and in our house. I attended church, where by the way one married deacon tried to proposition me because I already had that bad reputation (I was 13 by then), and a decaon's son asked me on the church steps how much I might charge for a certain sexual favor -- not seriously but as an insult to put me down on the porch of God's house. Fresh air, good values and hard work did not save me, or any other person who had the misfortune to cross paths with the wrong kind of adult. Pedophiles have been with us always, as have damaged children. These two girls would probably never been abused by this pedophile if the state had done it's job in monitoring him and putting him on the sex offender registry. Parents need to also talk to their kids about this kind of thing. You HAVE to warn them that there are people out there who would do this kind of thing to them if given an opportunity. PointOView, I didn't state that a good set of values, as well as a quality upbringing makes a child immune to exploitation. What I am saying is that it does give a person the tools they need to meet life, and its myriad of challenges and pitfalls, head on.

I had/have a good sense of what was right and wrong. Sadly, I don't think kids have that instilled in them as well as it should be. Of course some will have more than others, but overall I think society is producing far too many young people who don't have a good enough sense of right and wrong.

Children are being raised in a society that is becoming increasingly secular, liberal and humanistic. People no longer have a well developed sense of morality. I have made points in past posts about gay marriage. I do not oppose gay marriage but not because I think it's a good thing. I don't oppose it because I see it as the natural progression of a society in decline. It's the inevitable outcome so why fight it? Our society is merely reaping it's reward. Opposing it makes as much sense as opposing taxes...it's a useless endeavor.

As unpopular as moral values are in society, they do exist for a purpose. That purpose is to provide the society some structure and guidance. Without a compass to guide us and a support structure to support us our society is doomed. It doesn't take a genius to see it either. American society is circling the drain and there isn't a damn thing any of us can do about it. We are doomed to repeat the failures of past societies. Believe you me we are not the first society on this planet to have followed this path. All societies eventually fail and the progression is remarkably similar.

I suppose my opinion is aimed more at the bigger picture and less at the little pervert in the newspaper article. People like him are a fact of life..they're like roaches, or rats...they are parasitic. It's the good moral fiber of a society that keeps them in check. When society loses it's moral compass these disease vectors run rampant. This sicko got away with his activities, in part, because the children he targeted were vulnerable. The children were vulnerable, in part, because of their lack of moral teaching. Simply put, they were ill prepared to resist people like the little pervert in the barber shop. I'm not slamming parents either. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. None of us raise our children in a vacuum. Most are educated in public schools which are notoriously secular and liberal. Most children see raw sewage on TV 24/7. Most parents are working their butts off to pay the stinking government the taxes they demand, and have little time left for quality parenting. Children don't have good social outlets anymore. It's a recipe for disaster.

Iheartpeace, I am so sorry about what happened to you. I care about what happens to children. You are so right; to even converse with a child molester gives them the feeling that they are excepted and "okay" by society. They need to be shunned and then placed in jail so that they cannot hurt another child. I also feel bad for this molester's daughter; not only did she have a mother who was mentally ill but a father who raped her for years. I hope and pray that you find some peace and happiness in your life, iheartpeace. You were, and still are, innocent of the crimes that were committed against you. You are still a little lamb. So what authority keeps these judges on the bench? Even if a judge is initially appointed, don't judges in Maine (at some point) have to be elected? What is wrong with this state (other that so much)? THE PEOPLE need to take back their power through the vote. Vote "YES" on Qestion #4 and then we can move forward and take better control of the courts as well.

As an aside and certainly not pointing fingers but in deference to this strange miscarriage of paperwork, I am closely related to this case and I upon meeting this man had all of my alarm bells go off and asked my spouse to look up this man on the database, he of course was not there. That being the case one felt as if one were just being suspicious and unfeeling in a new town. I never warmed to his seemingly false shenanigans and "concern" for my family as there was always an underlying sense of falseness and creepiness to be had in my meetings with him. I also always found it suspicious that his own family had vanished from memory or conversations , it was as if several years of his life had disappeared. However ones own suspicions are not reason enough to deny friendliness to ones family members..I however never stopped keeping an eye on him and his activities..I shall betray no more except for the fact that the first family moved because of him but the girl had not come forward out of fear, so they moved on suspicion and stalking related concerns. The parents and children involved in this are loving, watchful, communicative, but prone to lapses of humanity like all others. Leave the children and parents away from your condemnation the parents of one of them as I stated spoke of concern and if he was on the database at the time none of this would have happened as he was looked up during heavy speculation and concern on the part of the family early on....this man is more sinister and evil than you know and it is no surprise to find a family abuse it was an early theory of mine ..let instead move forward and feel slightly safer that this sinister, wretched excuse for a human being has already begun his scarlet letter styled hell and soon shall learn the meaning of prison justice to his ilk.....

This is a hot topic. Teenage prostitutes, guilty wives of child molesters, estranged daughters having flashbacks, incompetent court systems, even gay marraige debates. All this does not change the fact that people like this are sick individuals. There is no excuse and anyone who believes there is any way to help people like this or forgive this kind of behavior should be locked up with people like this for a few days and God forbid they should have children. What the people of Maine need to do is elect judges that are on the side of VICTIMS instead of PERPETRATORS. Checking past political records of judges stand on these issues does help. We also need to tell our legislators that child sexual assault and molestations is NOT ACCEPTABLE and will not be tolerated. We need to lobby for laws that will be more than a slap on the wrist; NO BAIL, and longer, much longer jailtime upon conviction.

Perhaps one of the girl victims of this scuzball "accepted payment" because she has been molested previously by someone else, and thought this was normal behavior.

A friend of mine who married presumbably a great guy, discovered that he had been molesting their three daughters. And she and her husband had a regular sex life. Most of you all are saying the right thing, being conserned for the girls and their families and that is appreciated. Some of you however are very insensitive. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that is one of the many things that make out country so great. I understand that people are going to read a couple of paragraphs and think they know the whole story and form opinions. What I don't understand is how some of you are so insensitive to put your comments out there that have the ability to hurt the victims and their families more then they already are. If you don't have anything supportive to say why put it out their so the victims can read it. Do you not think that they will be reading what people have to say about this? If your opinion is not something that you would share with the victims, show some resstaint and don't post them! Those girls and their families need to hear words of support right now because they are litterally going through hell, why make it worse.

cjosmom makes a very good point. Our community should be rallying around these girs and helping them heal rather than adding to their pain. Another thing for the cruel folks on here to ponder is this -- he was convicted back in the early 80s. He has now been caught again in 2009. How many victims have their been between that first conviction and the present charges? And will those victims ever feel comfortable coming forward or getting the help they need and deserve after seeing how harshly the first two very brave girls have been treated by some members of our community? If you aren't part of the solution, folks, then you are part of the problem.
