BOWERBANK, Maine — A Bowerbank man who left his home Thursday to search for his dog and spent the night in the forest after becoming disoriented returned home safely Friday.

Search and rescue personnel had been looking for Alfred Thomas Hall III, 36, who left his home at noon Thursday because he thought his dog had left the property, according to Sgt. William Chandler of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

When the man’s mother returned home at 3:30 p.m., she figured her son had gone for a walk, but she thought it was unusual he left the dog behind, Chandler said Friday. The mother told wardens that her son typically walked the dog each day, he said.

“It’s not uncommon for him to be late, to not get home until late,” Chandler said. When Hall failed to arrive back home by 1:30 a.m. Friday, the mother called police. Before that, the family had initiated their own search by riding the roads in the area looking for him, he said.

Chandler said he was assisted in a ground search by Wardens Glenn Annis, Mike Morrison, Roger Guay and his trained search dog, Maine Search and Rescue canine teams, and Investigator Allen Emerson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. Warden pilot Charlie Later also searched first thing in the morning from the air.

As the search was under way, Hall returned home at about 7 a.m., according to Chandler.

“I believe he spent the night in a wooded area out behind his residence,” Chandler said. “He was cold, but he was in good shape. He said he kept moving all night. That way he kept warm.”

Chandler said Hall was the subject of a search about two years ago in Bradford.

maybe he should buy a compass.

Wonder why he acts this way and still lives with his mother at 36 years old.

Don't use bread crumbs to mark a trail.

Obviously there's a disability here. Glad the guy got back OK.

repeat customer for the search teams -evaluation in a mental facility needs to be performed -attention getting behavior.

I think you people who post these rude comments when you don't even know the problem , are probably the same sort who bullied kids when you were in school. This cruel world needs more compassion not hateful people.

Glad it was not 3 months from now, thank the Lord he is home

"This cruel world needs more compassion" This Country and this State shows more compassion to it's mentally challenged citizens than it does it's senior citizens. Exactly what did this little search for Alfred cost us taxpayers?? One of our biggest employers in Piscataquis County is the service groups that cater to the mentally handicapped. No i don't know if Alfred is mentally challenged or just plain lazy but i do know if he is not and still lives with momma at 36 years old he must be getting assistance from some place. If he is capable of taking long walks with his dog he is capable of working, maybe as a dog walker. Just get him a GPS system so he can find his way home. I'm sure one of the service groups can get him one with no problem, even spend a couple thousand to teach him how to use it.

15wbulb---I can see why it's 15w, you don't sound too bright . Did you ever think of volunteering to help someone less fortunate than yourself ? Maybe it would give you a better perspective on people who need assistance of some sort.

I feel sorry for you . You sound like a bitter old man who is alone and blame everyone else for your situation.

eastmainer--- I hope ya get to feeling better. You dirty little pot smoker.......... Nope i'm none to bright, just a notch above Alfred. Well maybe not that bright even, cause i'm not living off Momma. You ever bully anyone in school?
