Probe of five men shuts down Calais border crossing

CALAIS, Maine — The international border crossing between downtown Calais and St. Stephen, New Brunswick, was closed for about nine hours Sunday night and early Monday morning at the request of the Canada Border Services Agency.

The incident began when five men left a vehicle on the Canadian side of the border, walked across the Ferry Point Bridge and attempted to enter the United States, confirmed Ted Woo, spokesman for the U.S. Office of Homeland Security.

Because of security concerns about the vehicle, Canadian border officials contacted U.S. Homeland Security about 6 p.m. Sunday and asked permission to close the border, Woo said. Permission was granted and the border was reopened about 3 a.m. Monday.

The men were detained by U.S. authorities “only long enough to determine they weren’t going to be let in” to the U.S., Woo said Monday afternoon.

No one was arrested by U.S. authorities, Woo said, and the men were returned to Canada.

Fearing that the vehicle the men parked at the duty-free parking lot in St. Stephen contained explosives, the RCMP bomb squad was called to the scene, Sgt. Claude Tremblay of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police J Division in Fredericton, New Brunswick, said Monday by telephone. The bomb squad remained there as the men were questioned, he said.

Woo said he was scrambling Monday to counteract “wild rumors” and dozens of telephone calls from people who believed that the car contained a bomb and that the men were from Afghanistan.

He said the men were not from Afghanistan, but he said U.S. privacy laws prevented him from providing details about their citizenship status or identification.

The RCMP bomb squad found nothing untoward in the vehicle in the parking lot, Laurie Gillmore, a spokeswoman for Canada Border Services Agency, said Monday.

“Nothing, there was nothing in the car, but at the time there was a concern because the car was abandoned. [Canadian officials] had reasons for concern, so that’s why they called in the bomb squad,” Gillmore said.

Border agencies in neither Canada nor the United States intend to charge the five people with anything, Gillmore and Woo said.

“They were deemed inadmissible to the U.S.,” Gillmore said. However, “from our perspective they were in Canada legally.”

She declined to provide further details on, for example, whether they were citizens, landed immigrants or tourists.

Likewise she declined to say where they lived in Canada, where they went after they were released, or whether they picked up their car before going on their way.

During the incident, police on both sides of the St. Croix River diverted traffic to the Milltown Bridge until the Ferry Point Bridge was reopened at 3 a.m.

Woo could not explain Monday why it took nine hours to reopen the border.

He said that denying entrance to the U.S. is a common event. “This is not something that rarely happens,” he said.

Tremblay said there were no traffic problems on the Canadian side of the border.

“We were very lucky,” he said. “You couldn’t have picked a quieter time. It was raining, it was cold, there was a little snow. The border was closed until 3 a.m. and we had no problems.”

In a news article published Monday in the St. Stephen Telegraph-Journal, Tremblay had been quoted as saying the five men were “not Canadians and are possibly illegal immigrants — possibly from Afghanistan.”

Woo said Monday the men were definitely not from Afghanistan.

Calais Police Chief David Randall said he was contacted Sunday evening by customs officials who told him the border was being closed temporarily, and that the Canadian authorities did not need his department’s assistance.

“There were no problems on our side with traffic,” Randall said.

Writer Derwin Gowan of the Saint John Telegraph-Journal in New Brunswick contributed to this report.

Keep up the good work!

close the border; what a joke.. I grew up on Elm street in Calais and my Grandparents on the river in Milltown N.B. ; you can cross the border any time you want... the border patrol is a joke.....If you want to cross you can there are hundreds of spots to do this.

When I was a child ( 50 years ago ) I remember watching my uncle with a wheel dolly taking a stove across the frozen river. several years ago I watched a border patrol sit in his car drinking and smoking on duty ( really working hard for our tax dollars )

Wow patrick, someone actually drinking and smoking while getting paid?? On our tax dollars?? How dare they! This is an outrage!!

Um, what was the agent drinking and smoking? Did you take pictures and report him to the proper authorities?

-Patrick, it would appear that you spent your childhood on Elm Street but never did grow up. The Border Patrol has an impossible job which would be made easier with the public backing their efforts, not enticing undocumented immigration with comments such as yours. Good work agents, BOTH "sides" >

Patrick, this is not 50 years ago. The Customs and Border Patrol Agents are the best of the best. Go back to your basement and continue hating America from there, instead of spewing your anti-American views on here.

Hey Patrick - here's a really great idea, pack your stuff, put it on your little wheel dolley and head for Canada! It obvious that you do not appreciate the hard working american work ethic that makes US who we are.

Hey Patrick, didn't you ever hear of breaks at work? Have you ever even worked? And if you did, you must have gotten breaks, right? Get a life.

Looks like Patrick is the new whipping boy. Welcome aboard!

patrick -- that was 50 years ago. Try to cross the border in some obscure place now and your @ss will get caught. I also remember days crossing on the ice, but no longer. Sad for locals, great for security reasons!

williamson - LMAO!

Minor correction: The Telegraph Journal is published in St. John. The St. Stephen paper is the St. Croix Courier, which is published twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first addition of the Courier since the incident will be available this afternoon.

Perhaps, Patrick, you could make up those little maps to sell (like the ones they pedal in Hollywood where the stars live) and point out those "hundreds of spots" where illegals, terrorists, etc., can cross? Seriously, you cannot be an arm-chair critic. None of us want that job watching the border. It can be stressful, I am sure, for these agents to constantly be on guard - and not look it. They deserve meal/smoke breaks just like everyone else. I thank them for being out in all kinds of weather looking out for my safety as an American Citizen.

Thanks for the vigiliance of those working on both sides of the border!

Can't be too careful these days. Times have changed considerably in the last 50 years. Thanks to the Border Patrol and Custom Agents and all connected to helping insure our security.

You guys are a riot! Using terms like " Best of the Best" and "Hard Workers" when describiing the boarder patrol? Please, they are one step above being a mall cop. If they were so good why did they keep the station closed for 9 hours for a routine check? I'll tell you why, because they were not prepared. Patrick is right...If you want to cross the boarder you can. You think the Maine/N.B. boarder is more secure than the Texas/Mexico boarder. How many thousands of illegals cross there?

And why do you people keep thanking them for not doing anything...those idiots had to release these people as soon as they got them.

Apparently Patrick was asleep during 9-11 and didn't realize how things have changed within what is now the Department of Homeland Security.

.I agree that the boarder patrol do a good job. But I was wondering why all the secrecy about the five individuals who tried to cross the boarder. Could it be that it was just a test to see if they (the boarder Patrol) were doing their jobs right. ;

patrick i believe the article pertains to the border being closed to traffic due to the parked vehicle...

um, user 5225, I believe the correct spelling is BORDER not "boarder"........they do have night classes to help you out......good job to all our folks helping to protect the BORDER!!!!!!!!

Look, is everybody scared that the arabs are comming? Open the damn border so that commerce and families can move freely across it.

I am not a fraidy cat, like the Bush administration has made all of you!

I also grew up on the border and it was more like one friendly town to another when you crossed the bridge. I remember crossing the bridge on Sunday afternoon to go to the old State Theatre for a movie, because Canada's movie halls were not open on Sunday - we crossed the border at the old Union Street bridge!! What memories, but like everyone says - times have changed. Too bad, because though I married and moved to the USA I still have family in Canada and would like to visit and/or attend to my parent's graves, but I refuse to get a Canadian Passport for about $190 when I just spent over $300 to get my greencard renewed. For citizenship papers, I would have to spend another $300 or more and on a fixed income, I cannot afford it. As for getting my citizenship papers earlier in my life, I was more interested in raising my family and working to support them, and the time just went by so fast that the process of citizenship papers "took a back seat" in my life, now it is too late!! Well, too bad!! I always figured that the Border Patrol was a really great enforcement group, and I have a deep respect for them. The U S Customs/Immigration officers (now Homeland Security) have always been professional and even friendly (or most of them have been friendly) - in fact my brother-in-law has recently retired from the Homeland Security Force. While growing up in Canada most of my neighbors were Customs Officers on the Canadian side, and always good neighbors. Like Kitterykid, I wish that things could be a bit more lenient for those who live and are married on the border to be able to cross like we used to - but again - times changed with the horrible 9/11 attacks. What a shame!!!

Many of these terrorist are already within the US anyway and recruiting new members. It's at the point where they have more rights then we have. People can't even fly an American flag and someone gets offended...or say public prayer and someone gets offended and the flag goes down and the prayer is stopped. These who hate this country are fighting for their rights within this country while we loose ours. Accused of bigotry, hate, or fear mongering if you oppose the taking over of our freedoms and ability of our people use and uphold the constitution of this country. Seems to me that the fox is already in the hen house. Keeping our borders safe is important but there's still other issues that need to be addressed.

Homeland Security is a fear tactic used by the Bush Administration to cow us into surrendering out rights. Ben Franklin said (paraphrasing) "Those willing to surrender their freedom for security, deserve neither!" Truer words were never uttered!

Bernie..but their is common sense too. There is a problem with illigeal immigrants that have to be addressed and we do need tighter borders. As far as those who use cross the border daily there is no need to interigate these people as though the custom officers had never seen these people before.

I'm glad they turned them back, trying to correct the mistake they made when they let the LOONY with the machete in right after he had murdered two people..."there was no reason to deny him entry?" Give me a break.

Something else had to be going on here, either there was a tip about something or someone over-reacted. The St. Stephen Duty Free Shop isn't exactly a high-value target for a bombing imo.

How many Allah fearing, karma seeking, suicidal towel heads flying 747's into tall buildings did Ben Franklin have to witness? Times have changed, bub. No more black powder muskets, just long range missiles and chemical warfare.

Some things do change whatmeworry, other things stay the same. Give me freedom over security any time. If you'd rather have security move to China...I hear the communists are real good with security. I'll provide my own security. In response to the rest of your comment...your right war has changed. No longer do you need to look into a mans eyes while he draws his last breath, all we have to do now is press a button from a ship or plane and we blow up our enemy, his wife, his baby, and his neighborhood all at once.

...all with weapons we built here in the name of security!

Ummm, without security Communists can come HERE and have freedom, though right? Rather ironic, isn't it. Can't have one without the other.

Just to let you know "newsnow". You don't have to purchase a Canadian passport if you already have a green card. All you have to present is your green card to return to the U.S. which was already a law that was in place before the new document requirements. Hope that little bit of information helps you so you can visit your Candian family members.

As for this story I want to thank the Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection for keeping us safe. The same people who complain about them or any other law enforcement agency are the first ones that will be blaming them when something happens and begging for protection from them when they need it.

JUSTtheFACTSplease: Exactly what I was thinking. Good comment!! Thank you CBP...keep those terrorists out of this country!

Wow, I did not realize how many "anti-government" numb skulls actually read the Bangor Daily News. I figured they had their own news outlet printed on hemp paper or something. Reading articles about weapons and ammunition hording, along with great recipes for their hundreds of cases of MRE’s in the fallout shelter. Please, I think we all know that DHS has a job to do, whether we like it or not. Those who do not, I thoroughly encourage to research in relocating to parts unknown.

johnandsherry - Its not "anti-government" it's corrupt government. It's being controlled, by those who think they know what's best for me though they have never lived in my shoes. I will continue to support my country because I love it and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but it is my right and duty to ask questions and think about right and wrong. We can't go through life letting others choose everything for us like cattle.

user5225: This article has nothing to do with anything you just said...It has to do with the protection of our country. If you "love" this country so much then you would know this protection is absolutely needed.

mooooooooo.

Times HAVE changed. 9/11 was not a figment of our imagination...it really happened!! These officers have to go thru training to be a border official. I'm glad they did what they did....what they were trained to do. What if these people were let thru the border and something bad happened? Then, some of you would be b***hing about how lax the border patrol officers were! I'd rather be safe than sorry...

The car was in a lot??? what the hell was so suspicious???

They were Israeli Mossad agents. Hence the blackout.

Now why would anyone walk across the border after leaving their car at the border patrol lot, if they had a plot in mind? Wouldn't make more sense to run the other way?

Regardless, these are the measures that have to be taken to help America feel secure again.

sooo, what passed through???? points bridge??????

how many youths have you saved this month from child porn slavery?????????

Times have changed, but I grew up along the St. Croix and it even back then they had trip alarms in place.

I have to laugh at the rumors that flew through town like wildfire though.

Seriously...those of you who are posting negative comments DON'T KNOW the facts. BDN wrote a story to which they DO NOT know the facts but can only speculate ("what sources say") as to what could have happened to "make their story". The whole point that people are missing here is that little word called "confidentiality". You will never know what happened which is a GOOD thing - - aren't you glad that the people protecting you can't give any "joe blow" (the media) all the information so that someone else can use it to their advantage??? Props to U.S Customs & U.S Border Patrol for the job that they do. If you people who are on the outside would only get a little bit of an idea as to what they ARE doing and protecting, you would just be thankful the next time they do a random check on you to keep you in line. That's their job.

Wow - amazed at how many people are worried about terrorists and illegal immigrants, and zero talk about oxycontin and other drugs coming over. That is the REAL story of the ME-NB border. If you think the next round of bombers is going to come through Calais again, I would wager you're wrong. But drugs go both ways every day. And though the don't explode in big balls of fire and broken glass, they kill people just as dead.

To close the border for 5 men is this a joke ?

I parked a car at the border twice after 9/11 (because it was rented) and walked across once in Blaine wa. and the other at Point Roberts and both times the Border Services did not shut it down . It puzzles me why they went to that extreme just for 5 people who apprently they were unarmed and if was a matter of anything worst the RCMP could of handled it . If this was for 5 walking men then why are the drugs and guns going across .

If you want a bit more info on what happened, got to www.wqdy.fm --- they have a little more information - mostly that thre is a privacy code in force in reference to anyone crossing or not being allowed to cross the border, whether here or in Houlton or Vanceboro or wherever

By the way, Just The Facts Please, thank you for the info. I will check it out, but the last time I crossed the border I was told that I HAD to have a passport, so I have not been across the border to see anyone for over a year now. I had a couple of cousins put flowers on my parents grave for me, that I always do every Spring, but could not do it this year. I also had the Mayfield Veterinary Service for my dogs and cats, but had to change to the one in Perry for the animals shots etc.

newsnow...(Just the facts please) is correct. Unfortunately you must have spoken to the wrong person concerning the new passport regulations or maybe they misunderstood that you had a greencard. If you have a valid machine readable green card (which you should because you said it was just renewed) then you only need to present that as proof that you are living in the US when you come back through the border. If you have more questions go to your local border crossing and ask before going to Canada but from the sounds of it you already have what you need.

Patycat...your situation obviously wasn't the same as what occured otherwise they would have closed the border for you! Don't question the actions of the officers ... everything they do is for a reason & if you could do better then sign up for the job and see what it's all about.

Thank you Northernmomma, I did check with a friend and she also said that all I need was the new "green card", so maybe I can get over to put a wreath on the graves this fall. I just did not want to get mixed up in all that mess at the border, and with what I have been seeing with the lineups to get over to St Stephen, I kinda did not want to get involved with all that!! LOL But the Customs Officer I spoke to was holding my green card (and my Maine Drivers License) in his hand when he told me that I would HAVE to get a Canadian Passport before I made my next trip over the border - this was in March of 2008. This is why I was so disappointed and just gave up trying to cross the border again!!
