Two men arrested in 30 camp break-ins

Maine State Police believe the two Millinocket men they arrested Monday night for burglary of a camp on Mattaseunk Lake in Molunkus Township in Aroostook County committed more than 30 other camp break-ins in a four-county area.

James Willis, 34, and David Bechard, 30, who recently moved to Millinocket from the Augusta area, were charged with one count of burglary each, but other charges are pending, according to Trooper Matt Grant.

Grant and Trooper Barry Meserve made the arrests with the assistance of Millinocket police.

“They’re responsible for in excess of 30 or so” camp break-ins, Grant said Tuesday. He said that includes more than 20 at Ambajejus Lake in northern Piscataquis County and similar camp break-ins on Smith Pond and South Twin Lake in Penobscot County.

Police also believe the two men are responsible for two burglaries at storage units in the Augusta-Manchester area, Grant said.

The two are expected to make their initial court appearances today in Bangor District Court. They were being held Tuesday at Penobscot County Jail.

Grant said the arrests came after the department received reports Monday of six break-ins at Mattaseunk Lake that occurred Sunday night. The investigation into those break-ins led police to Bechard and ultimately to Willis, he said. The two reportedly were traveling in a maroon-colored vehicle.

State police and the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department both had the camp break-ins under investigation. The first was reported Sept. 1, and the numbers escalated over the past month.

Grant said a variety of items was taken from the camps, including electronics, television sets, VCRs, electronic games, camping items, household goods and two firearms.

“There has been a large amount of property recovered from these burglaries,” he said.

Owners of camps that were broken into should contact either the state police or the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department to identify items taken. Those property owners who have not checked their camps in the Millinocket region in recent months should do so, he said.

There may be additional camp break-ins that have not been reported, he said.

They all look alike up there. Relatives of Jimmy? Millinocket needs its own jail, can't imagine the transportation costs to keep transporting the town to Bangor

northern Massachusetts 'flat landers. for you, i bet i know how these two 'sweethearts' are voting on question one....

My hat is off to the Maine State Police on this one. Good work!

I now beckon this agency for help with the serious drug problem in Millinocket.

I thought that people that break into houses had to be skinny, aren't they supposed to be able to run if necessary? I guess this is probably why they were breaking in to camps not actually breaking in to houses on main roads. Also what is up with the red/purple coloring around Bechard's eyes??? Can we say DRUGS!

Drug problem in Millinocket? Can't imagine it!

TAKE NOTE OF THE "WELCOME" SIGN THE NEXT TIME YOU CROSS THE TOWN LINE.

THE DRUGGIES APPARENTLY THINK THAT SIGN IS MEANT FOR THEM.

I hope they stick them away for a long time.

I'm glad these two blimps from AUGUSTA were finally caught! They should ship them back to Augusta to face their other charges..

Millinocket Police and Maine State Police did outstanding work.

i admire the tenacity of the maine state police

Professionals with a capital "P"

well done troopers grant and meserve

IT TICKS ME OFF THAT HARD WORKING PEOPLE, LIKE MY PARENTS AND EVERYONE ELSE WORKS TO HAVE A LITTLE GET AWAY, A LITTLE SOMEPLACE TO RELAX AND LEAVE THE WORRIES BEHIND, HAVE FUN WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN, THEY WORK HARD TO HAVE A HOME AND A CAMP, IT COST MONEY, UPKEEP, TAXES EVERYTHING, AND THESE FAT F***S JUST KICK THE DOOR IN AND TAKE WHAT THEY WANT.... THIEVES, REALLY REALLY REALLY PISS ME OFF.... GET A JOB AND PAY FOR YOUR OWN DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just glad to read they weren't one of 'ours'.

Looks like Bechard had been crying prior to the picture. Big, bad burgler! Apparently they just couldn't wait for Obama to "spread the wealth", instead they took it upon themselves.

Lazy Losers! Get out and get a job like the rest of us. Lucky no one ever caught in the act. They probably would't be around to have their fat face pictures taken.

Thanks to the sheriff department as well, all agencies worked hard together on this one. Hunting season was going to be interesting this year, guess I can move my tree stand away from my camp now.

It's all that free government cheese! Millinocket attracts these type of folks...that's why my family moved out!!

Elmerfud,

Can you read?? They are not from Millinocket, they came from where you are, down South!

ataloss...I couldn't agree more. I owned a camp one time and had it broken into along with a neighbor's place. It is a very sick and disheartening feeling to walk in to your home or camp (also had my home robbed years ago) and find it gone through. Some folks have nice things in their camps, fortunately I had nothing of value and only a few items were taken. It is sickening that vultures like that prey on people who are not around.

Suppose a public lynching would serve as a deterrent to these clowns and others like them?

Fat @&*%&# from Austin Powers comes to mind.......

Uh, "ataloss", You don't have to Sugar Coat your comment, Tell it like it really is!! I'm with ya!!!

I have a turtle coming out......

Look at those fat faces...geez...Like a spiral ham with eyes !!!!!

great job by the police.thank you

The article doesn't say that any food was taken from the places they robbed, but the sure do look like they were eating well. Hope they like the food in the county jail. Nice work by police in this matter. Too bad they won't be around after TABOR II passes.

bet they are quite the hit with the ladies.........

60 piece chicken Mcnugget sir?

Willis has maple syrup running through his veins......

Bechard bobble head night at the county jail tonight!

OF COURSE you want fries with that !!!

mswinston says we will have to support these two ass***** in jail. What makes you think they will end up in jail? Maine has such a soft judicial system, that we'll be lucky if they see a few days in jail. They may be found guilty, but they will get a sentence of 15 years (all but 4 days suspended!!!!) If only the law actually punished people like this ,it may deter other up and coming young theives. I won"t hold my breath.

Excuse me, but these jerks need to be disposed of, permanently. There must me some worthy U.S. citizen in need of a heart, liver, eyes, tendons, muscles or any other part of these scumbags that might be healthy and useful. Certainly the type of person who steals from another must be punished harshly. An example should be set. Steal and you pay the ultimate. Lets not house, medicate, recreate, provide security for, and feed this scum for the rest of their years at an annual cost to the tax payers of Maine of $65,000.00. Their families should certainly be ashamed of these two. Be gone with YOU……Low life.

put these two tough guys on the front line in Afganistan.A couple of girly men.A couple of wine cooler drinking sallies.Probably tipped over tomb stones for fun as kids.Lowlife scumbags!

mswinston 10/21/09 12:57 PM~ You might want to re-think your mind set on the fact that it couldn't have been these two cats that robbed your camp. They could have had a couple of skinnier cohorts with them. Call the state police and have them check it out and don't stop digging until the catch the thieves who robbed you.

iminmaine 10/21/09 1:40 PM~ I agree, there was no shortage of food for them robbing... must have been drugs for sure!

BevisJSmithThe3rd 10/:21/09 1:21 PM and after~ You're on a roll... you should be a comedian.

mswinston they probably had half a dozen of Millinocket's juvenile delinquents with them. No one would miss 6 at one time with all there is.

Elmerfud....Ignorant,ignorant. Relative to Jimmy? What is your issue the two cases are not even related. These two are from down state and of no relation. WIth people like you in the area no wonder you cannot attract more educated people to the are. Shows you are from a mill town and not a coolege town you are obviously as you all would state"just as numb as a darn stump."

We look out for each other at the lake, and we help each other out. A message to the rest of the low life individules who ride the camp roads looking for a easy target. Go ahead and MAKE MY DAY. POP POP POP, rest in peace.

Loleve who are you to talk about people who are raised in a mill town or college town or to say anything along them lines. First off for growing up in a college town it sure didn't make you any more educated than us milltown people, since you can't even spell or write in the first place im proud to say i'm from a mill town and have more common sense then most of you "college town" people evidently . You make them look bad and ignorant. Second of all you're statement of how we talk, that you base on something you heard or seen on tv, that isn't how all people are. Get your facts straight not everyone from the area talks like a hick you will rarely find somone here like that. And everyone in the town are just ordinary friendly people looking to make it in a small retirement town that don't have enough work for them to be able to support their familys. The mill town has improved as far as crime, a lot thanks to Mike Davis and Twiggy Cram's hard work. Also the drug problem has minimized and isn't such a problem as it once was. Most of you say that's the problem that the town has, which I think is wrong for you to base this case on, that these 2 are not even from the area. Or base it on any problems in the past that this town may have had. I applaud the state police and sheriffs department and evryone else involved for the good police work and good Investigation on bringing these two in and stopping this string of burglaries. im glad to see that they're doing there job. I hope everyone gets there stuff back and ill be glad to see those two do a few year to see how they like it. maybe then they'll think twice before doing anything like that again. I'm sorry for going far off the subject but I feel as everyone should stick to the case at hand and stop including other subjects not involving this case. negitivity toward the town or past isues not involving the case at hand. Jimmey, college towns, drugs, food, voteing, none of that has anything to do with the issue at hand lets try to stick to the real issue. Which is these two robbed 30 some odd camps. what should be done about it. should they be made an example of. Is that really all they robed 30 or is there more. Or are these even the real two, maybe they're not, so who will be next. what did they really take. What were these people looking for was it money or guns what happend to the guns they took. these are some of the things that should be discussed.

These are not the first crooks to come out of Augusta. Send them to jail for a long time. By the way casper, your spelling and grammer is terrible. I am also from a mill town but paid attention in school . Ans casper , loleve is pretty ignorant making comments about people he dosen't even know.

nothing short of a firing squad is needed for these loosers!!!!! great job maine state police too bad the ball will be dropped in the court system, more land owners need to arm themselves to take care of these dirtbags as soon as they come through your front door. send them to break into my house they wont be a taxpayers problem then!!!! not much worse then a thief

Between the criminal theives and political theives we arn't going to be able to have anything.

Maybe they were hungry?

Bechard is only 30? I'd never have guessed.

Casper, where did you get your English Degree from?

Fat useless idiots. Even if they weren't crooks, the fact that they are lazy enough to get that big says a lot. 100 years ago people weren't nearly so large for two big reasons.

NO WELFARE

and

People had to work for a living, and by work I mean something meaningful, not sit infront of a computer all day.

Well done Troopers. Two less idiots running around. the only problem is that one day they'll get out of jail and probably do it again.

I remember a story my departed dad told me years ago about catching a couple of low life crooks that broke into his camp and stole some cherished items. Lets just say those bad guys had time to think about what they did after he had them take a really, really long walk back to where they came from.

BTW-The katahdin schools have a rate of kids going on to post-secondary education of 90% with about a zero dropout rate. How many Maine towns can say that?

Good police work.

This guy Willis, looks proud, almost with a smirk on his face. I hope he is "proud" when his fat a@#$ is in jail!!

SCHMUCKS!
