MACHIAS, Maine — Bryon Alley, 51, of Water Street was arrested at his home early Wednesday and charged with Class A arson.
A Class A crime conviction is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
The arrest came after an overnight fire in Dennysville at a mobile home, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The fire was at the home of Joyce Morse, 61, of South Ridge Road. McCausland said Morse and Alley knew each other but were not involved romantically.
“They were not dating,” McCausland said.
Alley is accused of setting a fire near the door of Morse’s mobile home about 2 a.m.
“Her two dogs started barking and that likely saved her,” McCausland said. “If that fire had taken off, her exit would have been blocked.”
Morse put the fire out with water and then called the Maine State Police. No fire department was called to the scene.
Trooper Andrew Foss and two State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators arrived at the home and Morse told them she was awakened by her two dogs and found the fire.
McCausland said Morse suffered minor burns on her feet but refused immediate medical treatment.
Fire marshal Sgt. Tim York said the fire was set near a door on the outside of the home using nearby combustible materials.
York said Alley was questioned a few hours after the fire and was arrested. He remained in Washington County Jail late Wednesday pending a first appearance in court either today or Friday.
