Search for fishermen will be suspended tonight

BANGOR DAILY NEWS PHOTO BY GABOR DEGRE
A Canadian Defense Force rescue helicopter searches the waters between Lubec and Campobello Island, New Brunswick for three Maine fishermen who were on an urchin boat which was reported missing Tuesday evening. The search, which included the U.S. Coast Guard, Maine Marine Patrol and local fishermen, continued through Wednesday. The body of one fisherman was found iWednesday afternoon.

EASTPORT, Maine — U.S. Coast Guard officials spent more than an hour with family members of a sunken urchin dragger’s crew late Thursday morning before briefing the media on the status of their search.

The Bottom Basher, a 34-foot urchin dragger went down Tuesday night. A large debris field and oil slick were found in Straight Bay Wednesday by Coast Guard and other vessels searching for the overdue crew of three men.

The Coast Guard recovered the body of Darryl Cline of Machiasport Wednesday, but the other two crew members, Joseph Jones, 27, the boat’s owner, of Trescott and Norman Johnson of Cutler were still missing. With rain and an air temperature of 37 degrees, and water temperatures of 47 degrees, the Coast Guard said it would suspend their search at sundown Thursday. Seas in the area were forecast to be 4 feet by late afternoon.

A pile of debris from the sunken vessel was piled on the dock here. None of the pieces was larger than a kitchen table. The debris field, Coast Guard officials said, was extensive stretching from Reversing Falls at Straight Bay, to Campbello Island, New Brunswick

Cline’s body was recovered Wednesday in the waters near Shackford Head, Eastport.

What could be the cause of this?

So very sad. Thoughts, prayers and condolences to these men's familes and friends.

@FrankC - The spot where the boat went down is a very nasty one...currents so fast that it wouldn't have even given them time to put out a distress call before the boat was pulled down and/or apart. How do I know this? I come from a family of fisherman and people that know the area well.

norman johnson is my uncle

my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time of tragic loss. To all their family and friends may time bring you peace. As far as I can tell all fisherman are very pationate about their work. Remember everyone.. they could not have passed from this earth to heaven any happier then they were. Time will help ease your pain.. take care of each other.. Remember all the ""good ol time"" Peace be with you all

prayers for Daryl's 2 children

Condolences to all family and friends of these hard working men. What a tragic thing to happen, again, to families of this region. From the news article: "A pile of debris from the sunken vessel was piled on the dock here. None of the pieces was larger than a kitchen table".

My question is this, could a giant, rogue wave cause a disaster of this type???

A terrible loss.

As to whomever wrote the photo caption. Although it is the Canadian Department of National Defence, it is the Canadian Armed Forces. The Helicopter is a CH-149 Cormorant

may these 3 souls rest in peace! condolences to all family

My thoughts and prayers are with all three families. This is such a senseless tragedy. Each and every one of these men will be greatly missed.
