Flu vaccines today for students in Bangor area

BANGOR, Maine — Schoolchildren in kindergarten through grade 12 from the Bangor area will have an opportunity today to be vaccinated at no cost against both the seasonal influenza and the H1N1 flu. Public health experts say school-age children are a high-priority group for both vaccines and local officials strongly recommend that parents take advantage of the clinic, which is for students only and which will run from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Bangor Civic Center.

Patty Hamilton, director of public health nursing for the city of Bangor’s Department of Health and Community Services, said Tuesday she has been working with her staff, area schools and other groups since Friday afternoon to plan the large-scale clinic. The centrally located event, and a second clinic planned for Wednesday, Nov. 4, will take the place of individual vaccine clinics that had been planned at several area schools but which were postponed by a delay in the availability of both seasonal and H1N1 vaccine doses.

Hamilton said she would have at least 4,000 doses each of H1N1 and seasonal vaccine in both injectable and nasal spray forms.

Public school students from Bangor, Brewer, Dedham, Orrington, SAD 22, SAD 63, RSU 14 and RSU 26 may participate in the clinics, as well as students from John Bapst Memorial High School and All Saints Catholic School in Bangor.

SAD 22 comprises Hampden, Newburgh and Winterport; SAD 63 comprises Clifton, Eddington and Holden; RSU 14 comprises Hermon, Carmel and Levant; and RSU 26 comprises Orono, Veazie and Glenburn.

Some schools, but not all, will provide bus transportation to the clinics during the school day. Children and teens under 18 will need permission from a parent or guardian to receive a vaccine. Information and permission slips were sent home with students from participating schools Monday.

This has to be the best example of the incompetence of the Bangor school system. Basically they have decided to have a hands off approach instead of a proactive approach to dealing with the H1N1. While you are in line outside, waiting and waiting on Buck St. to hopefully get your child vaccinated, you can watch bus load after bus load of children brought into the civic center. Every bus is from a school that is not Bangor; every one is organized to have appointments and scheduled times for their shots, strait to the head of the line. Am I upset that these kids are getting vaccinated, no. My outrage is at the total ineptitude of the Bangor School system to plan this. Apparently every other district has had no problem figuring it out. They have had months to plan this out since the vaccines have all been delayed.

I just left the flu clinic. My kids din't get the vaccine. Stood in line for 2 hours, got into the auditorium to find approx. 200 people inside.....between the front doors and the ticket booths. I estimate 180 because there were 8 lines of 20 people. The lines were zig-zag left to right, crammed in like sardines. People coughing, sneezing, kids with runny noses. Real healthy environment. Not any orginization to the mess. I appreciate what the organizers were doing, but how many people did they expect would turn out? They should have anticipated this massive response, and prepared for such. Bus loads of kids were arriving, and it was much more organized for them. They were escorted into the Civic Center and received promt attention. All Saints school had a full bus in and out in under 45 minutes. The lowly people in line were told that the busses wouldn't affect the wait time. When 5 busses pulled up at the same time, the line stopped. What a disaster. Do we really want the government getting further involved in health care? They couldn't organize a flu shot clinic with 4,000 doses, how can they manage healthcare for the masses?

I am completely outraged at this level of idiocy. Every other town in Maine is scheduling their school kids to get their kids vaccinated in the actual school. Don’t believe me, look it up on the cdc site:

How irresponsible of Bangor. Are we that stupid up here? Can we not organize a simple inoculation? If people a long time ago had not set up the current government and how to run things I don’t think the current morons would be able to wipe their own butts.

Went just before 1:00 was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Would have been even quicker if we'd got there a little later. I heard people say the wait time first thing in the morning was 3 to 4 hours. Too many people showed up at the same time. I think I would've just come back later. Very well run clinic, kudos to those who put it on and staffed it. The best part was it was FREE!
