SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — The victim in a Monday night home invasion suffered only a superficial wound and has a history with the seven men accused of assaulting him, according to a local law enforcement official.

Police Chief David Chapais said Wednesday that the victim was familiar with the people who allegedly entered his home around 11:30 p.m. Monday while he was sleeping. Chapais declined to indicate what sort of disagreement originally may have led to the ongoing dispute.

“All the parties involved knew each other,” Chapais said. “I think [the incident] was preplanned. They weren’t invited.”

Chapais said police are trying to determine how the man was injured. A pair of scissors found in the home has been identified as a possible weapon in the attack, Chapais said, but he thinks it is more likely that the man was hit by someone’s fist.

“He was taken to the hospital, treated and released,” the chief said.

The victim is approximately the same age as his alleged attackers, who are in their late teens and early 20s, Chapais said.

The man targeted in the assault was not alone when it occurred, he said. The victim’s girlfriend, her child, a male roommate and the roommate’s child all were asleep in the house when the group entered but no one else was attacked or injured, Chapais said. The house is on Main Street in the downtown village, he said.

The seven men arrested shortly after midnight Tuesday include: Jacob Bagley, 22, of Harrington; Ian Grant, 20, of Hancock; Alex Hartley-Johnson, 21, of Lamoine; Brent Lockhart, 19, of Hancock; Justin Pinkham, 20, of Hancock; Matthew Smith, 20, of Ellsworth; and Gregory Spurling, 20, of Hancock.

All seven were arrested after the Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle in which they were riding was stopped by police on Route 3 in Trenton. Residents of the house gave police a description of the vehicle involved in the incident, and after area law enforcement agencies were asked to be on the lookout for it, an off-duty Mount Desert police officer came upon the SUV on Route 3 and informed other police where it was, Chapais said.

Officers with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department stopped the vehicle and assisted, along with Bar Harbor police, as the seven men were detained and then arrested by local police, according to Chapais. Each of the men has been charged with burglary and assault, he said.

Police are looking into the possibility that other people may be involved in the alleged home invasion, the chief said. The SUV has been impounded and was expected to be searched by police Wednesday afternoon.

“I think these guys have been going round and round with each other for a while,” Chapais said. “We’ll see if we can put a stop to it so no one gets hurt.”

Four of the men were released Tuesday on bail from Hancock County Jail, but Bagley, Grant and Pinkham each were held an extra night on alleged bail violations, according to the chief. As of Wednesday evening, none of the men remained in the jail, according to a corrections officer.

The police chief said Officer Rick Graham is leading the investigation and is being assisted by officers with Maine State Police and the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office.

try a home invasion on my home, and you would never have made it out alive to get caught driving away a few miles later.....the authorities would need body bags to remove this **it from my home...Matthew smith from Ellsworth, hum name sounds like I have heard it before.......Seeking money for drugs and booze = so called young adults in trouble.....career felons...

i agree....come to my house.....and it would be your last...send them to jail ....there was a baby in the house they could have hurt...what about it s.w. harbor police ? ; you gonna put em in jail or just wail till they kill some one

DRUGS????? They look like a shady bunch, bet they will be in and out of prison for the majority of their lives!

i agree... come on over and invade away if the dogs dont get them tha 12 gage will.

all the home invasions ,stabbings ,shootings and people want more gun control.no thanks i will keep mine.

why would 7 people, go beat on , one guy, unlesssssss he owed someone in the 7 for drugs..... make sense now?

These seven guys were also from several towns and wide spread also,,, safe to say that it was drug related.

And I agree with the rest of you,,, they are dam lucky because around here people do not react lightly to sombody busting into your house, lucky they werent shot because ,,,come into my house and disrupt my family youd be going out in body bags.

Shows you how productive to society thay are going to be if they are in that kind of trouble at this young an age.

Spurling,

Looks some happy about what he did by his pic,,,, I say send a message that this crap will not be tollerated and send them away for attemted murder.

It takes seven of those wimps to beat up one guy?? What a sad bunch of sissies.

Anonon....I agree, and in Boston this would be considered just that, along with the home invasion charge....but courts wi;; probably slap the wrist and out the door they go to continue on the downward spiral they call life....we best keep our guns handy and ready, I know I will.....

Disgusting, feel sorry for the parents of these young men surely they weren't brought up to behave this way. Drugs have poisoned the youth of Hancock county.

The youth poisoned themselves. I'm around their age and there are drugs everywhere in Maine. It just takes a real man or woman to stand up to this crap and make a future for themself.

It shouldn't matter the reason, they broke in, hurt the guy, and others (including a baby) were there. They should all go to jail for a long time. Those people are all adults, and should be treated and sentenced as such.

Very well put Mainah!!!!! I couldnt have said it better myself! I have lived in washington county all my life and i have NEVER put anything up my nose or in my arms (or wherever they may stick themselves these days).

Gouldsboro i agree with you as well. It doesnt matter the reason they broke in...the fact is they still broke into a home where two children were sleeping and put these two children through such a thing!

Appears as though a couple of these punks find it all amusing. Give these guys some serious jail time and then take their pictures. The morons are lucky to be alive and bet they don't realize it either.

All I can say is the other people in the house sleeping were darn lucky...and the guy they beat up. They are all lucky these idiots didn't kill them all. When these young people get strung out on drugs & booze they get mental. It is sad that our young adults today are wasting their lives away, they seems to be followers not good leaders. Parents need to start teaching them when they are YOUNG to be responsible, heard working honest citizens, and they wouldn't end up like this...headed to jail.

Word in SWH is that theywere getting even because a day (or two) earlier, he pummeled one of them while his possee looked on.

What a bunch of scawny scrots...not one of them by themselves could fight their way out of a wet paper bag. 7 sissies....does one of those guys have a Hitler 'stach of does he have ashe on his face...or does it just grow in all scrot-like? Losers.

Hartley-Johnson and Spurling obviously think this is a funny ordeal. I hope the judge is extra hard on those two. Anyone would have to be an idiot to do such a thing in this day and age. Any one of them could have easily been killed or could have injured an innocent child.

All of these blokes need to do something meaningful with their lives, obviously they have too much free time on their hands.

Well stated Mainah, keep up the good work and stay straight, it will pay off in the long run.

As troubling as the fighting is the "family" situation;

"The victim’s girlfriend, her child, a male roommate and the roommate’s child all were asleep in the house"

How long before the children of these sh!tbirds start sprouting their own sh!tbird feathers? It won't be long.

You can't tell by looking at a picture or judge by someone's size whether they can fight or not. All you "internet" bad assses should just settle down a little.

I can't begin to agree with the comments about parent's teaching their kids right from wrong having anything to do with this. If the parents behave this way then of course it is their fault that their kids behave the same, HOWEVER I know many wonderful parents that have had issues with their 'young adults' acting like jerks and it was NOT for lack of parenting. Until your kids are all grown, and then their kids are grown without any of them ever getting into trouble be careful about judging the parents.

Probably drug deal gone bad....

If God hands you lemons. make lemonaid.

I think it's hilarious that all you "internet badasses" think you know just what went on. Some of these guys are my family!!The stupid @&*%&# that got beat deserved every bit of it. About the baby, that bag brings that baby to tons of parties and leaves her there while fights are going on. The guy that got beat came into a house 3 different times and started sh*t, once beating 2 of the boys with clubs and a crowbar while they were sleeping. Drugs were not a part of this, so stop talking sh*t unless you know exactly what the whole story is! Most of these boys have never even been in trouble. Haven't you ever heard of "protect your loved ones"? That's what this was about....Stop talking sh*t!!

Edit: The kid that got beat brought 4 other guys into the house to beat up the boys in the house...Wanna play army? Make sure you know how to play

I do have to agree with thasista on that one. Some people on here jump to conclusions to quicky and try to say what happened when they dont have any idea. Obviously there was a reason for them going into that house. I dont know any of these kids from a hole in the wall but by the way she talked it kind of sounds like he may have deserved it.

Did anybody think about the fact the that the same night a couple of those boys were beat in THEIR SLEEP by that guy..........is anything going to happen about that?????????

There are two sides to every story, was anything stolen? they all went to a house and pounded one guy and left? they did not hurt the women and children. thet fellow that got beat, perhaps he had what, well in the least, made 7 enemys. The taking law into your own hands is not good, its to bad that more time is not spent on educating kids on how to excersise legal remidys, well I guess they are getting a first hand lesson in law now.

thasista, and all the others that are ok with retaliation or whatever it is, please don't breed. It's the attitudes of people like you that make idiots dangerous. First of all, noone has the right to enter anyones house while they are asleep and if you do, expect a bullet, secondly, if any of them had a life, they would be thinking of much more productive things then how to hurt someone in the middle of the night like getting some sleep to go to work in the morning. For anyone to think that this is ok under ANY circumstances is a scary concept and they need a morality check.

I do understand it doesn't make it right for them to go to the others home. The cops should have been called after the first beating.

The "victim" in this story attacked my son with baseball bats in the dark and has been going around bragging about it....he had to go to the hospital with a badly beaten face that was almost unrecognizable.. I say "the victim" got off lightly. While I don't condone this type of behavior, I do firmly believe what comes around goes around...can you say "Karma"?

I don't even understand why half of you idiots even opened your mouths to say something about this. everyone is saying stuff like "they are dam lucky because around here people do not react lightly to somebody busting into your house, lucky they weren't shot because ,,,come into my house and disrupt my family you'd be going out in body bags." well no sh!t. why do you think the scum bag loser got beat up hmmmm..? maybe because him and 6 of his only junkie friends might have showed up that morning and did exactly what he got back plus he stole also and no one took anything from him. He got less then what he deserved. He is lucky he and all his friends are the ones that should be locked up, and ya "karma" did get him back from what i heard he crashed his truck a few days later to bad the kid didn't just die and do the world a favor!
