Chase early Wednesday leads to arrest of Bangor man

ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Bangor man faces multiple charges after he alledgedly stole two vehicles early Wednesday morning and led police on a chase that ended in a crash on Route 180 in Ellsworth.

Brent Lovely, 47, remained in custody Wednesday afternoon in the Hancock County Jail.

Police were still sorting out all of the details on Wednesday. According to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department, officers were called to the scene of a roll-over accident on Route 1A near Annie’s Pride at around 3 a.m. Wednesday. No one was around the vehicle, which Page said had been reported stolen in Dedham.

Trooper David Barnard of the Maine State Police was headed to Dedham to interview the car’s owner when he met a 1998 Chevy Tahoe on Route 1A. The driver of that vehicle turned off his headlights as he approached the trooper, who then turned to follow the SUV which refused to stop, Page said. The chase headed south on Route 1A and onto Routes 179 and 180.

The SUV crashed just past the Graham Lake bridge on Route 180 and Lovely fled the scene, Page said. A police dog from the Ellsworth Police Department assisted in the search and shortly afterward Lovely was captured.

The Chevy Tahoe was towed by Bill’s Towing which is located next to Larry’s Mobile Service. When the owner of Larry’s saw the SUV on the tow truck later that morning, he realized it belonged to one of his customers and had been taken from the business sometime during the night.

Lovely was charged initially with theft by unauthorized taking and faces several other charges stemming from the chase.

Excellent question- I am thinking it had to be an employee or an ex-employee of Larrys Mobil Service, who might have had a key to Larrys service station. Or maybe Larrys service station left the keys in the Tahoe and all Brent Lovely had to do is Start it and drive off.
