BANGOR, Maine — Overall, Wednesday’s students-only flu vaccine clinic at the Bangor Civic Center went off pretty smoothly, organizers said. More than 4,000 area children and teens in kindergarten through grade 12 were vaccinated, most with both the seasonal flu vaccine and the new H1N1 swine flu vaccine. Injectable and nasal spray forms of both vaccines were available at the free clinic.

Parents hoping to beat the rush by showing up early with their children met with a bottleneck. Many stood outside in the cold, damp air for more than an hour in a line that at one point extended from the main entrance of the civic center, out through the parking area, down Buck Street and along Main Street in front of the Bangor Daily News building.

Many parents, including some who had taken time off from work to be there, were unhappy.

“I wonder how many parents are willing to come and stand in line in these economic times when they should be at their desk,” said one father who declined to be identified.

“This is how the government runs stuff. It makes you wonder what would happen if there was a real pandemic,” said another.

In most cases, the H1N1 virus has so far not proven more virulent than the regular seasonal influenza. But its rapid spread and the lack of immunity among humans to its novel makeup has caused alarm among public health experts, who fear it will mutate and become more deadly. The World Health Organization officially labeled the global H1N1 outbreak a pandemic in July. Last weekend, President Barack Obama declared the H1N1 outbreak a national public health emergency. Gov. John Baldacci declared a civil emergency in Maine in September.

Wednesday’s clinic was open to public school students from Bangor, Brewer, Dedham, Orrington, SAD 22, SAD 63, RSU 14 and RSU 26, as well as students from John Bapst Memorial High School and All Saints Catholic School in Bangor. A second clinic for students from the same area schools is scheduled for next Wednesday.

At 9:30 a.m., Sgt. Eugene Fizell of the Holden Police Department was standing in line in uniform with his 15-year-old daughter Abigail. They had arrived at 8:15.

“As soon as I leave here, I have to go to work,” Fizell said. Fizell said many of his public-safety colleagues had school-age children and were taking turns covering for each other so they could get to the clinic. Abigail was shivering in a thin blue sweatshirt and jeans.

“I didn’t think we would be here such a long time,” she said. “I left my other jacket in my locker.”

Meanwhile, students bused to the event by their schools were unloaded at the front of the line and admitted to the facility through a different door.

Three of the twenty vaccine stations set up inside the facility were devoted to getting the bused students through the process as quickly as possible.

“We’re moving them through because they’re here without their parents and because the schools arranged to get them here,” said Shawn Yardley, director of the city’s Department of Health and Community Services. “The schools all had the option to bus their students here.”

Yardley said families had started lining up outside at 7 a.m. Although the crowd grew quickly and some delays resulted, he said he was happy with the big turnout. “I’m very pleased people are taking this issue seriously and protecting their children,” he said.

Inside, the queue shuffled through the lobby and down the hall, merging with another line coming up a stairwell, looping snakelike through the main room of the facility. Heather Papini of Hermon was there with her children Giovanni, 6, and Olivia, 8. The children attend All Saints Catholic School in Bangor, which had bused many students over. But Papini drove her youngsters herself.

“They’re not too thrilled about getting the flu shot, and I wanted to be here,” she said.

Mark Dube, owner of the local Coffee News franchise, waited in line with 8-year-old Noah and 5-year-old Asia.

“We had to wait outside for 20 minutes or half an hour,” he said. “I thought it would go through faster. You’d think they would have more stations set up if they expected thousands of kids.”

Like many at the event, Dube said his children would get both the H1N1 and the seasonal flu vaccines. He said he had some concerns about the safety of the new H1N1 vaccine, but they were overcome by his desire to protect his children.

“The H1N1 vaccine is the lesser of two evils,” he said.

At 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Kathy Knight of the Northeastern Maine Regional Resource Center said the big crowd of the early morning had largely dissipated by 11 a.m. and wait times had been significantly reduced.

“Since about 1, we have been getting them as soon as they come through the door,” she said. “Things are going very, very smoothly right now.”

At 9:30 p.m., Knight said that about 3,900 doses of H1N1 vaccine and juts over 3,000 doses of seasonal flu vaccine had been administered by the scheduled 9 p.m. closing.

A second flu vaccine clinic for students in area schools is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Bangor Civic Center. Participating schools sent information home with students this week.

Went just before 1:00 was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Would have been even quicker if we'd got there a little later. I heard people say the wait time first thing in the morning was 3 to 4 hours. I think I would've just come back later. Very well run clinic, kudos to those who put it on and staffed it.

Be sure to report any side-effects to the media. Docs will just deny it has anything to do with your shot.

My sister works for a dr, she refused the shot, the Dr was a bit upset and said when she got sick he'd say I told you so, she just smiled and said fine, everyone in the office got sick except her.

All the lovely sheeple. They believe the silly panic of the annointed one and his panicked minions, the media. Probably the same ones who stood in line 4 hours also believe in that global warming foolishness too.

How much carbon footprint did the busses idling for 3 hours cause?

Silly, silly, silly.

Well, this goes to show people are quite concerned about their health, especially now that the influenza season is nigh. I think the US health officials have altered the age requirements for those receiving the shots/spray, and adjusted somewhat the age and risk groupings.

The Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV), is the normal FluMist. The other type, which everyone is lining up like soldiers in basic training are getting, per the article, is the Novel H1N1 injectable type...the one not-at-risk people are supposed to receive. The vaccine priority are for those ages 2 to 24 years old; but the new adjusted priority ranges up to 64 years old. The at-risk groups are scrutinized by an on-site physician. All medical personnel are or should be under scope of practice under some chief physician's authority, or state department. I think most states have a Hotline to call for information, but I did not see one here in the article...does Maine have a Hotline established, I wonder?

No matter, I'm a very low risk person, and do not plan to get misted or stabbed anytime soon with this series. Plus, I live in a very low risk area. Lets see what happens this winter on the "Sick List" if BDN publishes it.

This will be what the lines look like to see your doctor when Obamacare is rammed through.

Waited with my 2 girls for about 2 hours first thing this morning and would do it again gladly. 2 hours is nothing to give in return for keeping your kids healthy & safe. (And the "H1N1 virus is just hype" people will reply in all-caps in 3...2...1..)

Well backshore, I hope your confidence in aimed in the right direction. Personally, I have zero confidence in the State or the Federal Government to get this right. I still think the whole thing is an excuse for yet another "emergency" to takeover even more of what should be between us and our docs. Th hey need another crisis to justify the outlandish spending they continue to do with our money.

Good luck - hope you all stay healthy. And get used to those lines-I agree with beelzebubba that this will be the norm - lines down the street for rationed healthcare.

Kids missed school for this, why didn't they go on Sat???

LOL Inland..... I love the "sheeple" comment! I can't believe the panic over this, it is crazy!

Why is it that ignorant, uneducated, and paranoid people think they know more than doctors and health experts?? In the absence of knowing something myself, I rely on the people I trust and who have more knowledge about something than I do. I'm a nurse and I certainly hope it is not you or one of your loved ones that I have to care for when they get sick. If my doctor or my pediatrician tells me to get vaccinated, I research the data, weigh the risks and benefits, and make the best decision for my family. I don't judge people who choose to make other decisions and not get vaccinated, why do you people judge those of us who do just because we don't agree with you? "Sheeple", really?? Reading these comments makes me realize just how many truly paranoid people we have in this world. I'm sure this is all George Bush's fault too, right? And don't respond to me, I'm not reading anymore ridiculous comments.

Inland and others, get real. Read up on flu in general and H1N1 in particular, from reliable sources of course. This is not the result of any one person (unlike some of the stuff you must be reading or listening too). We aren't at "emergency" status yet, but have you checked the stats for incidence of H1N1 and worse yet, the number of deaths, especially of children? I too will be very interested in seeing figures on how many get H1N1 flu and if they got shots or not. If this turns out to be a non-epidemic (which I doubt), we're still better off than having and epidemic and not doing enough about it. If it can be demonstrated that those at risk not getting the shot contributed to the spread of the disease (or worse yet, increased deaths), it's on them (and you if you forbade the shots). Scintillate, that's anectdotal. What were your sister's colleagues sick with? Sounds like she was lucky.

PatsFan has it right. We think your lack of trust is severly misguided.

the kids who were bussed in should have waited in line like everyone else! my mother was telling me that she tried to take my sister this morning, she got there at 8 and had to leave before getting in otherwise be late for work. like someone else said, why not hold it saturday or sunday?

Thank you for your comment backshore! It seems as though any parent who chooses to have their children vaccinated are some how doing an injustice. For those of you who want to sit back and criticize......spend a night or two in the hospital with your sick 3 year old who cannot breathe. That fear and helplessness you feel as a parent at that point is something you never want to have to face again. YES I will vaccinate my children....I want to do anything and everything possible to keep them as healthy as possible. Do I have all the answers...NO.....but I feel this is one way I can help protect them. I too would stand in line for 2 hours....smiling...because I know it was for the safety of my child. I am not one that will sit here and bash those who choose not to get vaccinated....that is your human right to do so......but DO NOT....sit and criticize those who do.

I agree, it should have been held on a Saturday, but c'mon, to have to stand in line for 2 hours for a free shot? It's not ideal, but on the other hand, I'm sure they only have so many resources to dedicate to this clinic, so it was inevitable that there was a line. How long would you stand in line to ride a free ride at the Bangor Fair? I'm impressed they offered the shot for free, so to have to stand in line was okay. What, if any, was so bad about the logistics of the whole thing other than a long wait?

"Abigail was shivering in a thin sweatshirt and bluejeans".

Is that really newsworthy reporting? Some dumb teenager did not dress herself properly (well, duh, she's a teenager and it must be cooler to look good without a coat?) and it gets a paragraph in the newspaper?

And police officiers "covering" for each other? Just what does that mean. someone else is working your shift while you are absent and getting paid for it?

I thought there was "family sick leave" that would cover soemething like taking your kid to get vaccinated. Am I wrong here?

It's a clinic....say it with me C.L.I.N.I.C...people are scared out of their wits...of course there are going to be long lines....hello?

Whether or not one believes that H1N1 is any more dangerous than any other strain of flu doesn't matter. It always makes me giggle when people start saying "Oh just wait until President _________________________ (fill in the blank) passes his "agenda"..you'll be waiting in line until your pine box comes!"

Give me a break. People all lined up at the door at the crack of dawn so that they could "get in and get out." Is it not common sense to see that the practice of wanting to be first in line is going to cause everyone and their grandmother to show up at the same time and slow the process?

Congratulations to Shawn Yardley and staff for coordinating this clinic. With what and who they had to deal with, stated clearly by some ignorant comments posted here, you showed that a government run "free" program can be completed in an orderly, coordinated and well executed manner. Whether people chose to stand in line or not was their prerogative. We sheeple did what we felt was right for our children. Choosing to miss work for the health of our child/children is again a choice we make. Thank you again Mr. Yardley and staff. You should be proud.

PatsFan 10/28/09 9:57 PM~ Your statement: Why is it that ignorant, uneducated, and paranoid people think they know more than doctors and health experts?? Your second statement: If my doctor or my pediatrician tells me to get vaccinated, I research the data, weigh the risks and benefits, and make the best decision for my family.

Obviously you don't always trust your doctor either, otherwise you wouldn't be researching, weighing the risks and benefits and making a decision. I might add, that since you do research, you're obviously not turning your back completely and ignoring the fact that we have government officials and big pharma companies who don't always make the right decisions... so I do commend you for that. Keeping an open mind is the right thing to do.

Those who have either experienced medical issues themselves due to the neglect, and money hungry big pharma companies, and those who are avid readers who comprehend what they read, are just using common sense. Physicians get a paper like JAMA; The Journal of the American Medical Association, they have sales people from the pharmaceutical companies walking through their doors with loads of meds to give them which often times include kickbacks for these physicians and hospitals for every prescription they hand out to their patients. The information that physicians get is generally in some way connected or supported to pharmaceutical companies... so they are not getting any unbiased or completely accurate information at all.

You're saying that those who don't agree to having the H1N1 vaccine are paranoid, and we feel that most folks who are jumping in line for this injection are not looking at all the facts from both sides. I'd rather have information on both sides of this issue and make a truly informed decision, than look at only one side of the issue, and make an uninformed decision.

Why should we trust our government or big pharma? We have 1 out of every 50 children who now have Autism, and parents who for for years were told their issue had nothing to do with vaccines, when in fact these same children have IRAK4 which is: a deficiency which impairs their immune system.

INSTEAD OF USING TARGETED DRUGS FOR THE 1 IN 50 WITH AN IRAK4 (T-CELL SIGNALING) DEFICIENCY, WE ARE VACCINATING THEM INSTEAD, AND COMPROMISING THEIR HEALTH.

IT IS NOW KNOWN THAT AN IRAK4 DEFICIENCY CONTRIBUTES TO INFLAMMATION AND A DEPRESSED IMMUNE $Y$TEM, SO WHY ARE THE$E AUTISTIC PRONE CHILDREN RECEIVING VACCINATIONS THAT CAN DEBILITATE THEM FOR LIFE?

This deficiency results in increased viral and bacterial infections (ear infections, colds, flu, etc.), plus increased inflammation and inflammation related diseases.

Please read this website: http://deathbyvaccination.com/SCREENING_KIT_FOR_AUTISM.html

I too want people to live a healthy life, I'm not against vaccines entirely, I just think we need to make the pharmaceutical companies design a vaccine that is safe for everyone!! We're ignoring the health of 1 in 50 children and that is unjust!!!

Remember, there are high-risk people out there who have no access to the vaccine -- long lines seem trivial to them.

Please put politics aside and stick with the medical facts concerning what's really going on here. Vaccines have been given for many many years. The more vaccines that have been given, the more ill a sector of our population has become. Please read my 10:23 AM post above and make these pharmaceutical companies accountable folks!!!

Check out the video above of the nurse giving the injection... she doesn't aspirate (pull back) on the syringe once she inserts to needle, to make sure she isn't injecting the vaccine into the child's circulatory system rather than into a muscle. This is VERY dangerous. Even trained professionals don't always understand that what they are doing is harmful.

Now, watch and see how quickly that video is removed...

The sad thing is that this clinic and the doses of vaccines were set aside by the health department for 'school-aged children' from the surrounding Bangor area. Grades K-12. My problem is that they were giving doses to adults/parents as well - including those that did not reside within Penobscot County.

Also no use of gloves. Wonder if they washed their hands between patients.

I love the way she wielded the needed around after she was finished injecting the patient too. Talk about safety concerns...

This video should be good training of what NOT to do when giving injections!!

Inland writes: And just why were they scared out of their wits? Because King Obami has managed to create the air of crisis and panic, just as he planned to do. Why can't folks see through this ploy? The same ones fawning over this guy are the ones with bumper stickers saying "question authority". Why do you think the government you elected is any more honest that the government you hated a year ago? Politicians are mostly lower than pond scum and they live off the hard work of the few left working. The free programs are nothing but bribes to voters to get elected yet again to screw stuff up even worse!

Remember the origin of the word politics - poly=many - ticks=bloodsucking insects.

Ha ha...I won't disagree with the last line, but people have been scared out of their wits about germs at a ridiculous pace for quite awhile before Obama

came along. Let me see...when did hand sanitizer/antibacterial soaps/antibacterial surfaces come out? Hmmmm...long before Obama (or any other bloodsucking politician). See amazed's discussion about big Pharma...

Here's the thing: If you work diligently to massacre all germs, then guess what? You not only kill the beneficial bacteria in the process, you make the germs "Super bugs." Ditto for abusing antibiotics.

Oh, and viruses...they don't discriminate - they simply mutate.

aspirating during an IM injection is old news...CDC says it is not necessary any longer.

OSHA also states, "gloves are not necessary when giving routine injections as long as hand contact with blood or other potentially infectious material is not anticipated. (most use gauze) If bleeding is anticipated and the employee is required to clean the site following injection, then gloves must be worn. Additionally, if the patient's skin is abraded, gloves would be required." OSHA really leaves it up to the discretion of the person giving the injection whether or not gloves should be worn. Is this best practice? I don't think so...

Gunnar 9:30 PM~ The only reason the CDC says it's not necessary to aspirate (pull back) on the needle before injecting the vaccine, is because the CDA and ACIP didn't bother to collect data concerning this issue, so they basically threw the practice out, which was not the responsible thing to do. The problem with vaccine injections is that they contain Thimerosal which has mercury in it. When vaccines are injected into a blood vessel rather than a muscle, the mercury instantly goes throughout the circulatory system of the child or adult, giving a direct line of mercury to the brain... and we all know the result of that.

As far as what is the CDC says is the proper thing to do for giving injections, read the following info: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/PDF/rr/rr5102.pdf Page 11 under Vaccine Administration.

We know that these nurses didn't run to a sink and wash their hands with soap and water in between patients, but did they have waterless antiseptic hand rub, to use in between each one? Let's hope so!!

Inland wrote: Um-the shot was only "free" for people who don't pay taxes...

Keep typing out your backside with false statements.

I knew Amazed would show up. My child was vaccinated during the free clinic. Yes, Inland I pay taxes as both I and her mother are employed. My child also has full medical insurance which is paid by two caring parents that once again, are employed.

Amazed my child will be fine. My child will not have any lasting effects from this vaccination. My child has been receiving vaccines since birth. My child is perfectly normal. Keep spewing the information you desire. That is your right but that does not make you right.

WHAT'S IN A FLU SHOT? Egg proteins and viruses linked to

autoimmune diseases and cancers; Gelatin and Polysorbate

80 (Tween80): known to cause allergic reactions

and anaphylaxis; Formaldehyde: known carcinogen, used

to preserve corpses; Triton X100: a strong detergent; Resins:

known to cause allergic reactions; Gentamycin: an antibiotic;

Thimerosal: Mercury linked to autism, Alzheimers’, MS, and

Parkinson’s Disease—far deadlier when injected into your

blood than when you eat tuna fish; Aluminum neurotoxin.

Kevin_of_Bangor 10/30/09 2:16 AM~ Yes Kevin, you are right, I will keep showing up to give the facts regarding the ingredients in these vaccines until people take notice and begin to do something about it. As I have stated many times... I'm not against vaccines... I'm against the irreversible harm and sometimes death that occurs because of them. Kevin, if I may ask, are you in medicine?

If anyone has a reaction, is paralyzed or dies from this vaccine, you can bet your boots it won't be in the news. Our government will do everything they can to cover it up!!

It's laughable that even in 2009 that so many Americans are paranoid that their government is out to kill or harm them.

Get the vaccine. It's your duty. You have no right to get H1N1 and then pass it on to others.

On one hand Americans claim to have the best government democracy in the world, but on the other hand a small "very vocal and influencial" minority claim conspiracy and corruption on anyone who dares serve their country or state, How ironic.

In the end it's your choice to take the vaccine. It's your choice to risk your health. Unfortunately, it's your choice to risk your family's health too.

Canadian: I won't argue the paranoia about government; however, let's not forget that a vaccine is a crap shoot at best, and not place all of our faith in the fact that it will prevent our catching the Swine Flu 100%. I am amazed at how many people actually believe that.

Nonetheless, the single biggest thing a sick person can do to help prevent the spread of disease is to not be a martyr and stay the heck home until they are well IMHO.
