King issues cautions on wind power obstacles

NORTHPORT, Maine — Converting ocean winds into electricity could be a boon for the state but many obstacles need to be resolved before it can become a reality.

That was the message former Gov. Angus King delivered Wednesday to more than 200 people attending the second Maine Coastal Waters Conference at Point Lookout.

King said the state will need to factor the needs of shipping, fisheries and environmental groups when siting wind generators offshore. In addition, the technology to harness that energy has yet to be developed, he said.

“It is an engineering challenge and a regulatory challenge,” King said. “A lot of people focus on the impact on fishing, shipping, whales and birds. What are the impacts if we don’t do it? What are the impacts of doing nothing?”

The conference focused on issues of concern to those who manage, study and love the Maine coast and was sponsored by a number of federal and state agencies. Sea level rise, climate change and ocean energy were among the topics discussed by researchers and public officials.

A member of the state’s Ocean Energy Task Force, King said the Gulf of Maine has enough wind potential, that if fully developed, could provide electric power for all of New England and parts of New York. He estimated that 10,000-20,000 jobs could be created through wind energy development.

Maine is highly dependent on fossil fuels with more than 90 percent of the oil consumed in the state going to heating homes and powering vehicles. He said electricity represents about 10 percent of the overall energy use in Maine. He said 80 percent of the state’s homes were heated by oil, none of which is produced in Maine.

King noted that every time the price of oil or gasoline rises by $1, more than $1.2 billion dollars leaves the state.

“It’s like a tax but we get nothing for it,” he said.

King said that in 1999 spending on fossil fuels accounted for 4 percent of a typical family’s budget. That percentage jumped five times last year and currently is at about 15 percent.

“That’s money people don’t have to spend on other things,” he said. “It’s a severe ripple economic effect where that money just evaporates.”

King contrasted the attitude of fire insurance on a home with the lack of energy insurance. He said people obtain fire insurance even though the potential of ever experiencing a fire is rare. But the price of oil is a known risk, yet no one does anything about it. That is being allowed to happen during a time when the developing world is demanding more and more oil.

“People have no conception of the size of China, where car sales were up 22 percent last year. When people in Asia start driving the way we do, we’ll need three planets of oil. I believe a freight train is heading toward us.”

That is why alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal and tidal energy need to be developed, he said. He described the federal government’s recent selection of the University of Maine as the lead institution in ocean energy research as an “enormous step forward.”

King, who is involved in the development of onshore wind energy, said he had no investments in ocean energy. He said ocean energy is a major opportunity for the state, and that Damariscove Island, one of the four research sites selected by the state, could be seen from his home.

“People in the mountains say ‘you don’t’ have to look at them,’” King said of wind turbines. “I get to look at one and I’m delighted.”

Put a gigantic turbine right at Indian Point so King can look at it all day.

The World Climate people will take care of everything. We just need to pass Cap and Trade here in the USA and then have Prez Obama sign the Climate Summit agreement in Copenhagen in December. That will pave the way for Wordlwide control and redistribution of Western wealth (because we are the biggest climate culprits)............We will be reduced to a primitive life for the sake of the planet ......Somehow I do not invision Windmills all over China...

Nukes, not windmills. Windmills are unreliable and unpredictable as power generators. Backup fossil fuel-powered facilities must be kept hot for when the wind stops blowing. The number of windmills needed to make much of a dent is staggering. These things wouldn't have a chance to compete economically without generous government and rate-payer subsidies. Angus King wouldn't be investing in them without those handouts either. If the French can generate 70% of their electric power safely through nuclear energy and reprocess their spent fuel effectively, then why can't the US? Better that than ruining fragile environmental habitats and driving people out of their homes with these monstrosities. Ask the folks in Mars Hill about that, Angus.

Off shore wind power makes more sense then ruining all of our beautiful mountains. I have seen what it does to the mountain tops. The Kibby power project has large roads and power line corridors over the tops of beautiful mountains. The only reason that it is not offensive to most people it's remote location. If mountain wind power is going to be forced upon Maine residents then at least it should be zoned in a couple of areas for maximum use and leave the rest of our mountains alone.

These towers are 425 feet tall and can be seen for 50 miles on certain days. They only generate power when the wind blows. Nuclear power is way more effective. One nuclear plant generates the same power as 8500 windmills. What are we doing here? The only reason why wind power is going in now is the huge tax credits that the government has allowed. Now there is a plan to take the property tax income that these windmills are supposed to provide to the Unorganized Territories and move it away to other areas. So those of us that live in the UT will have put up with the adverse impacts of wind power and get no tax benefit to boot.

Maine has an excess of power supply. Can produce over 3200 megawatts, but uses only 900 on an average day.If Angus King would rather look at a turbine than a mountain ...it is because he sees dollar signs for himself. His way of like should not be forced on the rest of us.

Currently underground cable is being discussed to get the spits and spurts of power out of state from upper state wind farms. It is a huge cost than only benefits CMP/Iberdrola out of Spain.

The real money is being made by selling carbon credits. Kibby Mt wind farm can't sell their carbon credits because they are not hooked up to the New England Grid. Stetson Mt wind farm is...they aren't hooked up either. But they have an insider in the Obama administration that just pulls strings. The carbon credits are where the real money is.......... very crooked.

Duke power in NC mainly consists of coal fired power plants. They have bad air days. ...old people are asked to stay inside. High incidence of asthma with children. They can sell carbon credits to Texas wind farms. ...and keep operating. It all is added into their electricity bills. Seem like a scam? Brought to you courtesy of DC. Our reps all just love it. We voted them in. Time to vote them all out.

Oil has nothing to do with ME power. Two renewables plants have had to close to make room for wind farm power. Indeck and Fort Fairfield. Both bio mass and giving real jobs to ME woodsmen. They were forced to close by Iso New England...which is being investigated for anti trust issues by the Conn AG. Along with 50 million dollars worth of stand by energy not produced. We paid for that in our electricity bills.

Is there a connection between the former Governor and the Angus King who supposedly heads up mergers & acquisitions for First Wind? Identical name and not exactly John Smith.

"King, who is involved in the development of onshore wind energy, said he had no investments in ocean energy." Double speak??? Follow the money!

Angus King is losing his reputation for the corporate money. Coastal power...wind farms on mountains...in the potato fields.

With no way for said power to get to the New England Grid. Kibby and Stetson are using power to keep the turbines from deteriorating. It would seem this is a cart before the horse kind of situation. Permits for wind farms built by First Wind all over the state and they are flat broke. (look up their SEC report ) The Stetson Mt wind farm was foreclosed on by Credit Suisse just as gov baldaci was all thrilled that it went online. Which it didn't . Time for our newspapers to reflect reality. Or the reality of going under looms.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has turned down Iberdrola/Central Maine Electric for the 1.4 billion dollar upgrade. They didn't bother to fill out the paper work. That is for the little people. Can't catch them in a lie if they don't say anything.

Walter Griffin..you are new. Nobody wants to cover wind farm news. They quickly lose their reputations ...due to transcribing from the govt. and the wind farm industry. Good luck.

I have heard King's stump speech before. He does the same scare tactics about climate change and manipulation and selective use of data to scare people into thinking the world as we know it is going to end. Unless, of course, we embrace the wind turbines that he plans to make millions on by sucking out taxpayer subsidies and selling RECs. Jeezum! When are people going to smarten up to see that he is nothing but a silver-tongued snake oil salesman who is looking to line his own pockets? He should be ashamed that as Gov. he went through the politically expedient charade of support for protecting special Maine places and now he wants to blast away ridgetops and surround those beautiful places with wind turbines.

When he rhapsodizes about seeing a wind turbine, the only place there should be one is squarely up his arse!

Remember back in the 1970's AMWAY would make you a rich person, just come join up and you will be making sooo much money. Now it's Industrial Wind, kinda sounds familiar. Gee did anyone ever really get rich selling Amway??? Some more snake oil...

"I have heard King's stump speech before. He does the same scare tactics about climate change and manipulation and selective use of data to scare people into thinking the world as we know it is going to end."

Angus King, toured the country for a whole year after his governorship in a very large motor home. It was OK for King and his fair haired brood to drive thousands of miles getting under 10 miles per gallon, but everyone else better hunker deown and save the planet.

I guess when one has an extravagant lifestyle like Angus King - year long RC tours, seaside second homes, etc., you blast as many mountaintops as you need to blast. What a frauduelent way to go through life.

And what about Baldacci's "Quality of Place"? How do we aspire to preserving Maine's unique Quality of Place and at the same time pimp our ridgetops and beautiful farms for these ludicrous turbines, transmission structures and roads?

A den of thieves.

Once the transmission lines are built..Maine will never be the same. Doesn't the BDN see it coming? Do you care? Could you please print the truth. Iberdrola/Central Maine Electric will get what they want unless someone has the courage to say enough.

First Wind is supposed to be able to show that they have the financing to build a wind farm for it to be permitted. They have been broke every since Stetson Mt wind farm was built. Bailed out by tax payers in the form of grants . How could DEP and LURC permit them when they are broke. They have even admitted they don't have the money to build the Rollins Project. Still they were permitted. As they were being foreclosed on by Credit Suisse. Somehow they got a loan to keep the Stetson Mt wind farm.As soon as they got the grant through the stimulus bill, they started on Stetson II. The project manager, Matt Kearn , had admitted they did not have the money to build Stetson II. The grant was stipulated for wind farms that were operating. Stetson II was just a field. Our Attorney General's office needs investigating by the justice dept.

“People in the mountains say ‘you don’t’ have to look at them,’” King said of wind turbines. “I get to look at one and I’m delighted.”

"Wow!" Who are those people in the mountains that you are talking about? Do they really live anywhere near these things or are they a mile or better away. There is no way to avoid looking at them when they are looming over your head and land. We have tried. Their huge size and motion are inescapable. Let's just wait and see how you feel about them once they are there. I don't know, maybe if you can make a bundle of money from them you feel differently. I can't imagine.
