Man charged with murder after capture in Newport restaurant

BANGOR DAILY NEWS PHOTO BY JOHN CLARKE RUSS
Perley Goodrich Jr., was captured early Friday at this Newport convenience store by local police while he was drinking coffee.
NEWPORT, Maine — An intense manhunt that's been ongoing since Monday ended early this morning at the Newport Big Stop, where Perley Goodrich Jr. was arrested while drinking a coffee and a water.

Goodrich Jr., 45, has been sought by police since Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of his 76-year-old father and severe beating of his 64-year-old mother.

A waitress at the 24-hour convenience store and restaurant said she sensed something amiss about Goodrich Jr., who seated himself alone at a corner booth at about 12:30 a.m. today. The waitress, whose manager would not allow to be named, said red flags went up with the way Goodrich Jr. ordered coffee.

"He asked, 'Are there refills?'" said the waitress to the Bangor Daily News. "Then he said 'Do you want the money right now?' I told him no, take your time ... and he said 'I'm just going to drink coffee for a half-hour.'"

Goodrich Jr. was the only customer. Besides the peculiar exchange, the waitress thought she recognized him. She told a cook and a cashier, then took out Thursday's Bangor Daily News, in which she had seen Goodrich Jr.'s picture that day.

"I don't know what did it," she said. "That was the only time I'd ever seen his picture."

She had to be sure, because calling police on an innocent trucker was her "worst fear." She decided to try for a better look. She chatted with Goodrich Jr., who was wearing a green sweatshirt, jeans, boots and a camouflaged baseball cap, which he removed when he sat down.

"I never made eye contact with him even though I was talking to him," she said. "He said he had a truck warming up out back. That's when I really worried that I was going to be wrong."

But she and the other employees, a cook, a cashier and a manager, decided not to take the chance. The cashier called 911 at 12:39 a.m., according to Newport police Cpl. Allen Graves. Patrol Officer Stephen Morrell was the first on the scene and Graves arrived two minutes later. The Newport Big Stop is situated just off Interstate 95 in a busy area full of businesses.

Behind the restaurant is a large parking lot where numerous big rigs were parked early Thursday morning. The officers observed Goodrich Jr. through a window.

"I was probably 90 percent sure it was him," said Graves. "When I got close enough I made a positive identification."

The waitress said the officers came in together and told her to stay out of the way. They approached Goodrich from different angles with their guns drawn.

"He was cooperative," said Graves. "He complied with all our commands." Goodrich Jr. was turned over to Maine State Police 1:07 a.m. and taken to state police offices in Bangor for questioning, according to a press release.

Morrell, who joined the Newport police full time earlier this month, said the conduct of the employees in the store and restaurant was "spot on."

Graves, who has been a police officer for 25 years, said the smooth arrest was the result of "good police work."

"We're just glad that he's in custody and no longer a potential threat to the community," said Graves.

Pam McKay of Glenburn, manager at the Newport Big Stop, said she was proud of the way her employees conducted themselves and opted to conceal their identities because of their exposure to the public.

"We're just happy the person was caught," said McKay. Newport Town Manager James Ricker said news of the arrest brought great relief.

"I'm thankful that no other citizens are at risk," he said.

Although authorities said they'd had no confirmed sightings of Goodrich Jr., they searched a wooded area in northern Newport several times on the theory that the suspect was hiding there and evading capture.

The waitress said Goodrich Jr.'s clothes and hair looked clean and that there was no mud on his boots. "He totally didn't look like he'd been in the woods for three days," she said.

Newport Lt. Randy Wing said there was no doubt that the woods are where Goodrich has been, though.

"The officers did find (at the restaurant) the camouflaged jacket that matched the description of the sighting we had Thursday," said Wing, who added that Goodrich Jr. could have cleaned up "almost anywhere," including an abandoned house or even his family's 146 Rutland Road home, the scene of the crime.

As Graves and Morrell led a handcuffed Goodrich Jr. out of the restaurant, he asked them to take some money out of his back pocket to pay the waitress for the coffee, which they didn't allow.

"For someone who seemed so violent in what he did, he was totally complacent and cooperative," said the waitress. "I was surprised at that."

Penobscot County Deputy Noel Santiago arrived shortly after the Newport officers to help secure the scene and state police troopers took Goodrich Jr. to Bangor. Graves said the collaboration was the latest example of the how multiple agencies from the warden service to the Dexter Police Department have coordinated in this week's investigation.

"Just about every agency in the area has assisted us on this," said Graves.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said this morning that Goodrich has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail at about 4:30 a.m. McCausland said the Maine Warden Service had been preparing for another search that was to take place early today, but that was called off because of the arrest.

Now see? If the police had been sitting around eating donuts like everyone accuses them of they'd have caught him sooner. It was a worthwhile exercise in seaching the woods just the same. Hopefully they learned something from the 4 day search.

i can go hunting in peace now.

Criminals are so stupid, they always end up back at the scene of the crime or very close to it..........good job to the waitress and local police, one more scumbag caught and off the streets...

Give the waitress a reward

Wheres the news crew with pictures of him being dragged away in handcuffs

Good for the waitress, if it wasn't for her who knows how much longer this nut would be out. Obviously accused criminal was stupid to stick around town and to top it off go out in public at a restaurant/store of all places and try to blend in, you can't tell me he didn't know he had scores of police officers looking for him.

Must have been at the one stop restauraunt this early in the day.

Give the waitress a reward! How much time and money was spend looking for this man by scores of police officers, low and behold he surfaces at the Big Stop, and discovered by an unprotected, underpaid waitress. Tip her well folks!

Good for that waitress and thank goodness he was caught!

Now we can all rest easy!

Unless they let him go like they all did at the hospitals he was supposed to go to!

I still say this could of been all prevented if the hospitals had done their jobs in the first place to keep him, meaning the hospital he went to at first and then the mental institutions.. this is still rather unfortunate.. I wonder how the mother is doing.. there really has been no updates on her of late.

I do feel for the family for such a tragedy that could of been prevented... such a shame.

He couldn't have been in a more conspicuous place. That is the heart of the business area. It is a very busy truck stop/gas/convenience/restaurant. He wanted to be caught, no reason why he should have been sitting there where he would be known. It is not too far from the police station as well. Maybe he was going to try to hitch a ride from a trucker though? Good for the waitress to recognize him.

"Graves, who has been a police officer for 25 years, said the smooth arrest was the result of "good police work." " Gimmie a break-he wanted to give it up. Good police work would have been nabbing him on their own.

He didn't seem like a threat to socety, he was probably so calm because what he set out to do was done. We do not know WHY he killed his dad & beat his mom, but most likely things like this happen after years of mental and or physical abuse. The child who grows up to be a 45 year old man snapped and wanted revenge. I guess we will have to wait & see what the detectives find out. The quote about "Good police work" haha more like good usage of 911 by a smart waitress!

I vote that Newport honor the Waitress for Hero like behavior for looking out for us all.

Wow, great job for all the Newport Irvings Truck Stop

Way to go All you Law Enforcement Officers

You are the Best

Our own Blue Alliance

What a Great Team You Are

Thank You All that were envolved

(((But a Special Thank You to the Waitress)))

How is it "good police work" that found him? The waitress found him and called THEM.

Wishful thinking, but hopefully now, he'll get the help he needs. Any number of things could be wrong with him neurologically, which caused him to be violent at one point, and the four days later be placid and submit willingly, without struggle.

Rest peacefully Mr. Goodrich, Sr. and Mrs. Goodrich, here's to a speedy recovery, physically. My heart goes out to you in your time of extreme sorrow.

It wasn't good police work that found him. It was good police work that arrested him. Are you suggesting that the waitress could have handled the arrest of a potentially armed suspect also?

mr graves calls it good police work. yeah right. i said it before, if you don't take em by the hand and lead them there, they would still be looking. and they r so sure he was in the woods, and they know that, must have been right on his trail ready to get him. even the waitress says he did not look like he had been in the woods 3 days and she is not even a cop, wow, i feel so safe knowing how our finest r at work. good job by the waitress or he would have hitched a ride right under there nose.

You';d naysayers would have more to whine about if the waitress had been shot in the cross-fire of an arrest gone bad. Want some cheese with that?

Thank you to the waitress! She did the right thing by calling the police, even though she was not sure it was him. In a case like this weigh in on the side of caution. Thank you and now the town can breathe a sigh of relief.

Drinking coffee at the Irving? Who'd a thunk it?

So...the waitress had to go search for the newspaper to find a photo of this scumbag? Shame on the Newport Police Department for not visiting every business in town to provide them with a picture to hang up so people could easily identify him. I'm not in law enforcement, but that seems like something that would have been common sense. Who knows how many other businesses this guy visited before he went to Irving and the waitress decided to check her newspaper!

That was nice police work. They searched appropiatly and actively to keep the community concern and responsiveness to danger awareness. They were lucky and responded professionally with an unknown amongst innocent people. That's a mission accomplished , Good Job.

probably mommy and daddy would give him anymore money or pills

Grayson21- What are you talking about? Do you even know what this story is about?. This man KILLED his father and injured his mother and she is in the hospital. So yeah I guess in a way you are right, they can't give him money or pills if they're are dead or hospitalized.

NO ONE knows the criminal mine ! The brain is normal & sometimes it snaps with a short circuit.

I'm sure that onetime this man had love for his parents. Now he needs prayers for he will live for

his actions AMEN.

The guy has previous assaults on his brother and his mother, and many run ins with police. Long history of mental and drug issues known to everyone in town. This was a long time coming. Just a failure of the system on many fronts, failure to keep him from being a danger to himself or others. His parents allowing him to live there, despite all his actions (which is what parents do).

He probably wanted to get caught.

no, not all parents coddle their grown adult children. Some parents actually love their kids enough to shove them out of the nest so they will learn how to function independently and become responsible adults who contribute to society. This man is just one more example of very bad parenting and a failed mental health system. And his parents have now paid the ultimate price for not stepping up to the plate when their son needed help. It is not like they were not aware that he was mentally ill, they knew and did nothing!

This is so sad, I hope that Mrs. Goodrich makes a speedy recovery and is able to get through this, my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family during this difficult time. I do not understand why he was discharged from the hospital?? It just doesn't make any sense, although if he was sent to Acadia they probably just prescribed him tons of meds and sent him on his way, this seems to be standard practice for them, just look at all the methadone patients, way over medicated (and not just on methadone), I know a few people that go there and are prescribed a very high methadone dosage plus many are on ADHD meds, klonopin, valuim, siraquil, etc...this is their answer to drug and mental health problems, just medicate them!

Also thanks to the waitress and other restaurant staff for calling police and using their gut instinct that something was not right about him! I think that the police could have at least left her a tip, when he told them to take money from his pocket to pay for the coffee they should have given her a tip with the money, come on guys she found him for you, the least you can do is leave her a dollar, she only makes half of minimum wage and she was working overnights (the slowest shift)! I also am curious why they had to go to a newpaper to find his picture, why wouldn't they have been passing out wanted flyers, Newport has a lot of people coming off 95 from other places, shouldn't they have had flyers everywhere just incase he was hitchhiking and picked up by an unsuspecting out of towner, guess they just didn't think!

Why are so many so quick to demean the police? What more did you expect these officers to do? They have been searching and I guess none of you naysayers ever heard of searches by hundreds not finding someone lost for days. This guy was a fugitive who knew the area and knew where he could hide out....especially in a rural area where he lived. Yes, praise should go to the waitress for being alert and wise enough to call the police even if she wasn't sure if this was the guy. Praise should also go to the police for making this guy not be able to show his face and to keep on him till he had enough and gave it up, which is what he basically did. A lot of people in Newport will sleep better knowing the police and alert citizens caught the guy.

Joyful- Re: 11:46am- If you had read it the story yesterday said that Mrs. Goodrich (his mother) had taken him to the hospital on Sunday for mental health treatment, he was having bursts of anger and they where worried about him and their safety, the hospital then transferred him to another facility and the next hospital discharged him, so before you go blaming his parents for what happened try reading ALL the stories about this!!!

People keep talking about "a failiure of the system" meaning the mental health or social services system. But what we should all take a good look at is the failure of our way of life to provide the community, the love, the friendships--an adequate social fabric--that both greatly reduces the incidence of mental illiness and, though still inevitible, has a far milder and far less violent signature when it does occur.

This guy wasn't at Irving's to have a cup of coffee. He was there to surrender himself. Consciously or subconsciously I cannot say, I don't know. We can say he doesn't want to die but that he doesn't have a clue how to live either. Despite his prior actions, for whatever reasons and causes, he does have a desire to be human.

And yes he is a criminal. And perhaps he has elements of what we may call a criminal mind, and he has committed a heineous crime that calls for tough steps to be certain that that mind doesn't carry out such terror ever again. But none of us should forget that our minds try to stay in balance and that when healthy options--emotional, educational, financial, spiritual---are in short supply, the mind latches on to whatever is convenietnly at hand. Violence, victim oriented sex crimes, drug and alcohol abuse all look like good options to some people that simply have no other options apparent to them. Throw in some additional mental instability and disaster is assured.

We all need to ask the tough questions: Will the financial resources of our communities continue to be funnelled off to mega-corporations on Wall Street and our massive military-industrial conglomerate that maintains and expands our empire around the globe? Are we going to have a civilized civil society in the future? Is education going to be a priority in this country? Really? I said priority. Priority, like we must spend 647 billion dollars for just one year of the budget line item for the Department of Defense. We should have well paid teachers, and community workers of all kind, that bring social richness to our lives. But instead we have deprivation of various degrees for most of us, while we stand around and salute the flag of our empire.

Here in the Bangor area the greatest threat to most of us is either lack of access to affordable healthcare (or financial ruin as a result of the current system) or being the victim of an indvidual whose behaviour is way out of balance and out of control. Both of these threats are treatable and fixable but we need to insist that are civil society is THE Priority and that people are THE Priority. We need to "mind the store."

This isn't hypothetical. This is the reality and we all need to make a contribution toward moving in the better direction. You don't have to be against the military or Wall Street but you better be loud and vocal about caring for our civil society it's a tug of war of financial resouces and it not hard to see who is winning.

I heard he was hiding out with Whitey Bulger for awhile???

The Halloween Party is at Newport Big Stop, Good Job Ya'll

Oldtimer, Well said!!! The decision to take a person in and treat them or NOT, is usually a bottom line decision.

Hospitals are forced to operate this way because of Medicare and insurance company dollars. We live in a complicated and stressful society and those without education, resources and most of all, AVOCATES, fall through the cracks every day. Those who fall through the cracks are probably the ones who need community based services the most.

I have been in courtrooms in this state where cases involving drugs and drug related crimes are heard. The court enters a guilty or no contest plea, then orders jail time or more usually a fine and also orders that the person get help for mental and substance abuse and in the same breath asks how soon can they pay the fine? Unemployed and uninsured, these people are sent to the clerks office to make a payment plan. There is no mention of when will these people begin mental health care. ALWAYS, when these same people are arrested for violations, it is because they have not paid their fines or they have been caught using alcohol or drugs, NEVER, because they have yet to seek mental health or substance abuse care. When they are brought back to court, usually another fine or jail time is the result. I haver never seen a judge in this state, order a person directly to a mental health facility.

In reading the articles, it sounds like Mr. Goodrich, Jr, AND his mother and father, were very badly served by the mental health system or the doctors charged with his care. Maine does have an involuntary commitment procedure like most states, that was obviously not considered that day.

The poster that made the point about Acadia is exactly right. It has been my experience, with a family member, that they capriciously over-medicate both in and outside the hospital. But that notwithstanding, psych meds have a positive place in our society, if, and only if, they are combined with caring service and frequent follow-up care. This is where it would be so easy to partner with the courts. Follow up care could involve testing to see if people are taking the meds as prescribed and not adding other recreational drugs to the mix. No follow up, bad testing results and they should be brought back to the court immediately.

I wish Mrs. Goodrich a speedy recovery and I hope she finds a good lawyer to go after all those who failed her, her husband and her son. I really hope she makes her son a poster child for change in Maine.

All the judgemental comments here...

There was nothing to indicate to police where he was, or even that he was still in the area.

His parents, joyful, are the VICTIMS here. One is DEAD, the other is in the hospital. Why don't we pool money together, to have someone kill your parents, or your kids, or someone dear to you and then encourage all the loyal BDN commenters to pass judgement on you, me, and those who died? It seems people like you need something to hit close to home before you actually open your eyes and join the real world. Until then, you sit behind your computer, watching whatever happens to be on TV and passing judgement on the rest of the world.

Frankly, as for Goodrich, the guy isn't stupid for being in that area. He's smart. Stay in the woods, where nobody finds you, die. Go to the business district, get caught, you're at least in a position to get whatever treatment you need, and jail/mental health ward is much better than freezing to death in the middle of nowhere.

This whole judging the victims crap is pathetic. Essentially saying the Goodriches deserve what they got. As much of a scumbag I'm gonna sound like for saying it, joyful, I only hope that somehow karma does indeed exist.

Oldtimer 10/30/09 11:58 AM~ Very well stated... and excellent points.

Raysgirl 2:16 PM~ Another great post with excellent points... you've hit the on the head several times concerning the fact that these folks don't receive adequate mental health care.

My condolences for the Goodrich family. Not only did they lose a dad, and husband; (Goodrich Sr.), but they also lost a son and brother; (Goodrich Jr.).. had Perley Jr. been kept at the mental health hospital, this would not have happened. We need to do something about the way our Mental Health System IS NOT working. How many times has this happened in just the past year? One incident like this is far too many, but we've had at least 10 very similar cases this year.. and I'm sure there are many more that I'm not remembering.

lets just sue everyone, the cashier screws your receipt up sue her, thats the problem in the world we'll just sue them, its sounds like an awful mistake has been made???? time will tell, some people should just name their next soon to be daughter "sue" cause that is the only word you know, you get in a car accident and its your fault but people sue the insurance companies and you wonder why your premiums go up cause you like the word "sue", we should spend our money and do this or we should do that, most of you probably voted against government spending on psych hospitals instead you wanted better roads. There has to be a process where more than one person can determine whether your mentally stable to go home or not, the fact is who knows what went on in this mans life??? Does anything give you the right to take another mans life??? Depends i guess on the circumstance, i know i would not want to get checked into the looney bin, but he killed his father and beat up his mother, why didn't he take his mother's life too??? These are all just examples not facts but non of us really know whats going on or the history hear but love to blame others for it. Maybe Jr was scared of Sr, maybe he was molested as a child, maybe Jr was made into a head case because he didn't see the right people for help, maybe his parents couldn't afford to take him to get help, .......????, i don't know.......but to be in a state that someone's else's life is decided by another, something seriously is wrong with that, and its more of a problem than a psych hospital. You don't just wake up one day and decide your a wacko, events happen over time and lead up to the eventual answers.

now to all you law enforcement haters that were posting trash before now you can STFU. All that trashing of the police and look. Everyone was saying that the police are stupid for not listening to the neighbors they obviously didnt need them now did they. a**holes. The arrest was a result of good police work. When someone runs in your house and kills your family dont go calling 911 remember we dont know what we are doing

JillT on your comment he probably felt guilt?

Newport Police should have called Bangor - Hec we've got 85 police people doing nothing but writing false parking tickets just to meet our idiot police chief's quota - Naw ..it probably wouldn't have mattered - Kind of hard to find someone while sitting in a cruiser eating donuts - Kudu's to the waitress - I should think that these well trained idiots that just wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars trying to keep us safe - do a little interrogation and find out where he was for the last three days - then maybe they could use this insight to find future criminal's in a more timely fashion - Geeze

WOW - cbpo2858 - You have to be the biggest idoit on this planet - Hell you must be cop - and probably a bad one at that - You are probably mad because you didn't go for coffee & donuts 5 minutes earlier -- Tooo Bad - No medal for you --- maybe next time ---

(thinkaboutit) your a absolute IDIOT are you mad because you were speeding and got caught or maybe illegally parked and got ticketed. Stop trashing BPD they do a damn good job with this city. You dont hear about all the times that they bring someone in and get kicked, punched, spit on or slapped. Or how about last week when they peacfully made a driver surrender after he almost killed his 9 month pregenant girlfriend in a high speed chase. Oh thats right you didnt hear about that because your to busy judging police and their work. If you can do better get out from behing your computer, join the police force and stop being a b*tch.

Maybe he's guilty......maybe not................Unless you know the "facts" of the case, you are all in on the witch hunt. How do the police know he was the only one there????

Well here goes cbpo2858 - Do you deny that there is not a quota to harass the general public with parking tickets just to satisfy your idiot boss - No one like's him or respects him - Can you honestly say that you are a human being and an employee of the city of Bangor that your mission is to Protect & to Serve - I think not - Your entire terriost group is too intimidate the public - and strut your poppas as s around that your better than the rest and above the law - you can't be touched - You chose to be a policeman - just because an arrest was made top protect a 9 month pregnant woman doesn't make you a hero - You chose this profession - I expect that you would do more than just eat donuts & do what you were hired for - Maybe if you treated the general public with respect - You would get it in return -I can tell You are an as s -

skullbones: picture? I take more news worthy pictures going to the store than the news agencies. Besides it was 1230 am, it is bed time for them. they work so very hard...

CBPO2858, with an attitude like yours, I guess I just mite not take as many trips to Bangor as I have in the past. Sounds like you need a little self control.......

Reality, I have had several instances where a law suit might have been successful, but never pursued one until 2007. That is still pending. I am not looking for money, I want a certain medication to be more controlled, because that, in addition to Acadia's favorite prescription killed my husband, a father to 2 kids. The lawyers will ask for financial compensation because they take these cases on contingency, meaning the more they get for victims, the more they get for themselves.

I said that Mrs. Goodrich should sue, and I stand by that, because if you hurt a large corporate entity in the pocketbook, then they will take the appropriate steps to make changes. The odds are going to be that Mrs. Goodrich will have a hard time suing because of the malpractice laws in this state. She has lost her husband, and her son, who will be going to jail or otherwise away for a long time. She did the right things. She recognized her son's behavior was not normal. She took him to a hospital and asked for help. It sounds like that first hospital took her seriously and shipped the guy someplace for more help.

The next place gave him some medicine and sent him back to his home, where he beat his MOTHER, and shot his FATHER to death. If he was a danger to himself of others, which was clearly the case, he should not have been released. However, I would bet, that wherever he went, all of their "non-paying" beds were full and so he was turned back onto the street. People like this guy often don't work and don't have insurance, but with no firm diagnosis don't even qualify for Mainecare.

The sole reason for suggesting a law suit is to make someone take notice of the fact that men and women like Perley, Jr. cannot and do not get the help they so need to make them productive members of society. This was a tragedy that could have been averted

One more thing I think people should be aware of is Mainecare can be retroactive. All this institution had to do was diagnose him, have a social worker help fill out the necessary forms and he would become a paying bed. This was apparently too much work for the place he went, and their inaction is responsible for a life lost.

Raysgirl - such insight - such caring - you certainly have a good grip on the situation - Because of the breakdown in the system - because the $'s were not available - the entire system failed to protect the very people it was designed to help - now that events have occurred - a whole different outcome and process goes into effect - will they find him guilty - of course - society won't let him go free ever again - results - the rest of his life incarceration at taxpayers expense - Imagine a different outcome had the system worked and these so called organizations acted appropriately - sadly -- we will never know-

Think about the DEATH PENALTY, why do I have to subsidizise all this trash for the rest of my life. make it retroactive for all the jerks that have gotten life in the last 40 years.

Thank you, thinkaboutit. I know of many stories like this one, although most did not end this badly, but the fact is, there but for God, each of them could have.

Reality, you make contradictory statements. You said you don't just wake up one day and decide you're a wacko. You are indeed correct. And at least three people decided this man needed a psych evaluation, not one. His mom brought him to the hospital, where we do not hear that he was coerced. The doctor that referred him to the next hospital agreed with both mom and son. An intake worker somewhere agreed that there was a problem and he was taken by ambulance to that facility. Then something went really wrong. Instead of being held, he was given some medication and sent home. That is NOT how psych meds work! Once given to an individual this troubled, the effects should be observed for effectiveness and negative side effects for several doses. The medication MAY be the reason he escalated to killing.

But you say no one has the right to take the man's life, that you would not want to wake up in the "loony bin" (a poor choice of words IMHO). It did not seem ike Perley, Jr was opposed to the idea, but sometimes people need to be admitted to a mental health facility for just the type of behavior as Perley, Jr. demonstrated. Maybe it was fortunate for the community that he ended the violence with the death of his father. What if he had gone on rampage, killing lots of people who didn't even know him? Your house, for one example.

I can guarantee that until Maine does more to help individuals like Perley, Jr. your tax dollar will go towards housing him, and many others, for a long time. Housing him for the remainder of his life will cost in excess of $1.25 million dollars. Wouldn't a twenty thousand investment in mental health care be better spent?

Wallyo, Please remember you are referring to a human being, who at this stage is still legally innocent. I don't think the death penalty, most especially in this case is the way to go.

We as a society, a state, failed to help Perley, Jr. or any of the Perley family for that matter. I bet Perley, Sr. was a working taxpayer most of his life. Now you think the death penalty is the way to solve the problem?

I am not necessarily opposed to the death sentence in some cases, but this is definitely not one of them. Look online and see how many people have killed because of prozac or zoloft and I am sure others. While those drugs seem to work in most cases, it can have the opposite effect in others. THIS MAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOSPITALIZED and worked with until they had a medication regime that worked for him. Who knows, maybe he would have gotten well enough to go out get a job and place of his own?

My deepest sympathies to the Goodrich family at this time. May God help heal each and every one of you.

For some of you who obviously don't know the family, this man terrorized them emotionally and physically for years. He was a real whack job. I used to live down the street from the man and he showed up on our front porch one day with an ice pick in his hand. I'm not a psychiatrist but I was told at one point that he was schizophrenic; add drugs and alcohol abuse and it's a deadly mix. His poor mother won't have to suffer at his hand any more.

Good Job to the Police YAH RIGHT!2 planes,a helicopter, swat team,25 police officers and dogs were all around my house tuesday morning and we werent notified once as to what was going on as it wasnt on the news yet!His brother lives close by to me and allegedly burned the neighbors house down and was out 2 days after on bail so whats this guy gonna get?His brother shot at my kids and didnt get a thing I guess they will wait until someone else is killed before doing something about it.At least I can sleep a little better knowing hes behind bars and not up here chasing after his brother!

BBOP : This guy sounds like a real basket case,YES it should be looked into how this guy slipped through goverment run healthcare I hope they are held responsible for letting him go, they should have to answer for this with their jobs, at the very least. This is what happens when you have burocrats running your health care.

RAYSGIRL, when i went thru my divorce i seeked counseling, just because i felt that i needed it after a long stressful year and a half of divorce, my insurance covers partial cost of each visit, however, my counselor diagnosed me with depression and the state ended up footing the bill or the "paying bed as you call it" my comments were not contradictory they were just comments with no facts just ideas like everyone else, but your right about the money, if you have no insurance or you have no money there is help for people out there you have to take the first step and get the diagnosis from someone licensed and the rest is history. And i didn't say that his mother didn't do the right thing this is a comment board and people seem to be narrow minded on things or judgemental, i'm more broad there are more possibilities that lead to someone being in this state of mind, and i also said that there has to be more than one person that evaluates an individual and determines whether they stay or go you read it the wrong way.

regardless its sad that it came down to this period

WOW - cbpo2858 - You have to be the biggest idoit on this planet - Hell you must be cop - and probably a bad one at that - You are probably mad because you didn't go for coffee & donuts 5 minutes earlier -- Tooo Bad - No medal for you --- maybe next time ---

Thank-you mytwocents - you hit it right on - It seems the police approach every situation with their own terrorist approach - If they don't want to be spit on kicked or punched - Then old school wasn't so bad - Most people respect or used to - the police when intervening a crisis - not today - They have there fancy cars - weapons - hovercraft - new police station - They exercise their authority like a peacock wanting to mate - Most of this is due to leadership - Bangor has the poorest leadership on record with Gastia at the helm - This is no secrete - Amazing that Bangor had a well respected police force with at least the last 2 police chiefs - I can't remember a single controversy before now - Police today can't distinguish the difference between a disturbance & public threat - They act the same - I expect a high divorce rate because of this - More training is needed for these people we reply on to protect us and respond accordingly - To close - The poilice should give credit to the waitress for the arrest in Newport and stop taking credit that THEY MADE THE ARESST - eluding to the public that it was their efforts -

I should suspect that the idoit police officer & I use the word officer loosely - Being a highly decorated enlisted man myself - we used the word officer as a sign of respect & intelligence - it's very obvious from the explosive attitude and uncontroled temper of cbpo2858 that this idiot may be mentally challenged - God forgive us all should this idiot be called to a scene that requires excellence in judgement & skilled training - Having no training myself in detective work - My guess is cbpo2858 stands for - City of Bangor Police Officer 2858 (his Badge number) - Damn I should have looked for Perley - I probably would have found him..smile

This is so sad and such a wake up call. Oldtimer and Raysgirl thank you. What needs to happen to change this system?? The mentally ill do not get appropriate care and I can't wait til the details come out about his discharge. Who is going to claim responsibility? Less than a month ago a mentally ill person I know was discharged from that hospital under very similar circumstances. He was having violent outbursts, was a threat to himself and his parents he was living with. They said they'd find residential housing for him (although he should have never been released imo), but, instead sent him back to live with his parents!!! If you know anything about violent schizophrenics, you know they usually lash out on those that are close to them.

This is what happened to Goodrich Jr. He killed his Dad and beat his Mom.

Joyful, do you have kids? Put yourself in the Goodrichs situation."very bad parenting"."did nothing"..his mother brought him to the hospital and they released him!!!.Instead of letting him walk the streets of Bangor, she took her child home ..Do some research, learn about NAMI. That's the National Alliance fo the Mentally Ill. You see adult mentally ill living with their parents, because if they were not there, they'd be sleeping on a park bench or dead. The waiting lists to get into group homes is outrageous. If we as a people do nothing about this system you will see more and more of this happening. We need to contact our state reps and let them know that failure of the system is unacceptable.

Hooray to the waitress. Someone unafraid to reach out of her box and make a difference, maybe if we had more people like her in positions of power instead of the spineless robots we have, this World would be a different place.

Shame on the society for which it has become. The waitress calls the police arrest. Everyone wants instant gratification. A quick arrest next story..A quick fix for the flu..... next story......Gas prices go up..........Economy in the dumpster.........fix it next story......America gets drawn into a war....must last only two weeks so it doesn't interfere with there reality tv schedule lifestyle.... No money refinance and buy something you can't afford.....Default on mortgage blame government..........Next story.... Don't like the good ole' United States police departments, military, red white and blue, any form of governing power. People now live in a lifestyle of borderless lawless unrealistic false sense of security, living a lifesyle on the internet which sometimes I feel sorry for people who think there life is so great they crap on everyone else. Everyone lloves to give the police department a hard time because they didn't have the quick arrest, speedy trial, and blame everyone else but the perp. Put on your robes slide into your slippers point your vehicle to the nearest border and see how the rest of the world lives. Were all set here without ya

It would seem that he is not of right mind. What person being arrested for murder would have wanted to pay for their coffee while being escorted out?

AnnKar if they did put up posters then he might not have gone there. He wanted to get caught. But seems to me he has blocked the whole thing. He was more concerned with his coffee than anything else. That clearly says he wasn't there to cause a problem or pull a weapon for any reason. I'm sure more will cpme out later after they evaluate him. I just hope he isn't going to get an insanity plea.
