UMaine assault leads to charges

ORONO, Maine — An Augusta man was issued a summons for assault early Saturday morning after he punched two University of Maine students on campus.

UMaine spokesman Joe Carr said William Purington, 18, who is not a UMaine student, also was issued a summons for illegal possession of liquor by a minor by consumption after the 1 a.m. incident that occurred outside Knox Hall.

UMaine Public Safety Detective Sgt. Chris Gardner said a public safety officer arrived at the incident while he was on patrol in neighboring Oxford Hall. The officer saw Purington punch a male UMaine student in the face, and after the officer yelled to break up the fight, Purington took off running. The officer caught Purington near Androscoggin Hall.

The fight began when Purington approached the two students and asked whether they had cigarettes, according to Gardner. Purington became belligerent and an argument ensued, Gardner said. Purington reportedly had punched the other student before the UMaine officer observed the second attack.

Purington was given a criminal trespass notice to stay off the UMaine campus, Carr added. He was released after the officer issued the summons. (Jessica Bloch, BDN)

Too bad the University of Maine is not a "closed campus". It is wide open. Even if the road is closed from Route 1 and whatever that other roadway running into Old Town by Governor's is closed, (never to be now, though), anyone can walk onto the campus from any direction and even Talmar Woods. Maybe a gated community at the US campus would be appropriate. I know this would never happen, however...

what was this Purington doing near the dorms, anyway?

Makes me glad I quit smoking cigarettes before the last tax hike we had. These cig taxes must be taking a toll on peoples wallets and tempers. People must not like to share cigs as freely anymore i guess.

You never hung out on a college campus when you where younger SantiniSpagoandSpike? I had many friends that went to many different colleges.

Was even kicked out of a few halls by the RA because we had too many people in the room and we where drinking. Students are allowed to have guest in the dorms and a gated University with closed roads is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever read.

He was looking for an education.

I agree Kevin. Looks like the site is still being haunted. And Halloween's over.

College campuses are a micro-cosum of our society,,,,,,,,but hopegully a bit more civilzed. If this is the worst event that happens on the Orono campus this year, be thankful. I spent 4 years here in the 60's (when it was "dry") and most of us got along pretty well. Note,,,,,,,it was not a student who committed the crime. Closing campuses (except Yale, BU, Northeastern, Columbia, and all the inner city 3rd world hellholes) would be stupid!!!!!!

From Augusta? What the hell is he doing up there???

Isn't it time we made cigarettes illegal?

Hi, Kevin_of_Bangor...no, to answer your comment, no, I never had the reasons to hang out on college campuses'; only when I attended them or for special seminars as a student at Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, where I graduated from high school. But, I guess I see possibilities where Purington could have been in the room, though. I realized my comment on 'closed campus' prospect at UM was worthless, and will never happen, as I stated, it was just a passing thought and knew it would bring retorts.

You know, even as a kid of 15 years old with my first car I drove around, and at all other times, I enjoyed occasional drives through the UM campus. But never just to bide our time there. But, I see that the UM Public Affairs Office (or some office) is letting the public know about every police incident on campus, no matter how minor, I see.

Haha! He was looking for one even tho i doubt he knew that that's what he was doing. The universe is trying to speak to him but he doesn't seem to be listening. I wish him knowledge enough to keep his hands to himself. Some people never do learn, especially in today's climate of thumping those who anger you. O well, life is a hoot, really

Shame on Mr. Purington for not out-running the UMO campus cop

That's evidently the result of Purington's being a smoker, ChairmanMao.

This could hurt his chances of being accepted to Umaine. Thankfully, he can still apply to Husson.

Darwin Candidate

If Purington didn't smoke, he just might have out ran the Rent-A-Cop, he is definitely in need of an Education.
