Maine's election chief projects 35 percent turnout

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap is standing by his prediction of 35 percent voter turnout despite massive get-out-the-vote efforts on the same-sex marriage referendum.

Dunlap says he bases his estimate on requests for absentee ballots. He says the number of requests is high for a ballot featuring only referendums, but it doesn't compare to a presidential election. In presidential elections, Maine's voter turnout has sometimes hit 70 percent.

Mainers will vote Tuesday on gay marriage, two tax-related referendums, the repeal of school district consolidation and an expansion of the state's medical marijuana law.

Shouldn't Dunlap be, ohhhh, I dunno, COUNTING PETITION SIGNATURES??

No I think he should be working on TOMORROWS ELECTION!

IF YOU DON'T VOTE---DON'T COMPLAIN !!!

With so many pre-voting comments in the BDN web, plus the amount of discussions these issues to be voted on in Maine has caused, one would think that the anticipated voter turnout would be better than 35%! The same-sex marriage issue is extremely controversial nationwide, and IF Maine (voting counts) do run about 35%, as Maine's Secretary of State predicts, this is unfortunate.

Get out and vote. This is what our military people fight for in this country.....to be able to live in a free country where one's vote does count!!

Looks like an older turnout will favor Yes on #1..according to this poll done over the weekend, Yes is ahead.

Vote early. Vote often.
