Wounded Warriors

Hours after the shooting Thursday at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas, pundits and partisans were spinning the tragedy as evidence of one of two foreign policy blunders. Although there may be evidence to support their two explanations for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s alleged actions, a simpler take may be that he was increasingly troubled and simply snapped.

As a devout Muslim and first-generation American of Palestinian descent, Maj. Hasan’s actions could be seen as a reaction to the U.S. military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Those asserting that view believe it bolsters the argument that the U.S. is locked in a global struggle with a radical, militant version of Islam.

But the shooting also will be used to support the view that the true cost of the two wars had been ill-considered by the administration that launched them. As a psychiatrist who specialized in post-traumatic stress and other emotional problems soldiers experience, Maj. Hasan’s actions can be seen as a cry to stop the emotional price of war.

A less politically charged way to understand the tragedy is that Maj. Hasan suffered a mental breakdown of catastrophic proportions. As a medical doctor, Maj. Hasan was trained to heal, not hurt, so something must have gone terribly wrong in his thinking for him to become violent toward those in his charge.

The fact that Maj. Hasan is a Muslim may have played a part in his breakdown. After the shooting, his cousin told The New York Times that other soldiers harassed him about his religion. He may have felt he was betraying his national and religious heritage by participating in the military effort against two largely Muslim nations. Yet, according to the Times, he enlisted in the Army over the objections of his parents, saying he was born and raised an American and wanted to serve his country.

Above all, Maj. Hasan probably was afraid of what his impending deployment to Afghanistan would mean.

“He was mortified by the idea of having to deploy,” Maj. Hasan’s cousin told the Times. “He had people telling him on a daily basis the horrors they saw over there.”

The Fort Hood tragedy highlights an ongoing failure by the Department of Defense to provide mental health care for soldiers. A little over a year ago, a soldier at Fort Hood shot and killed his commanding officer and then shot himself. That tragedy prompted Carissa Picard, wife of a soldier who is stationed there, to write about the Army’s neglect of mental health issues. She asked Military Family Network to reprint her piece on Friday.

She cited then-Veterans Affairs Secretary James Peake’s testimony to Congress that male veterans of the Iraq operation in the 18 to 35 age range are twice as likely to commit suicide as their civilian counterparts and female veterans are three times as likely to commit suicide.

“Suicides are not the problem,” Ms. Picard wrote last year. “They are a symptom of the problem: the Army does not put nearly as much emphasis on the mental health and well-being of its soldiers as it does on their physical health and well-being.”

The Fort Hood shooting is further evidence of the urgent need to fix that failure.

The author of this editorial would just love to hold Maj Hasan and tell him everything will be alright and reassure him that he simply snapped and It was all the military and George Bush's fault........

Let's not dance around this subject. This 'alleged' act was not 'alleged' at all. It was premeditated. And it was not a 'tragedy'; it was an act of terrorism. Radical Islam is based on fear and hatred, spun with lies about rewards in the afterlife based on how many others you kill on your way out. The Major fell for the lies. He should be shot by firing squad.

You are so right. I totally agree with you , I would more than 100% if it were possible. The facts in this case are the facts. "Alleged" ??? typical wording from someone who obviously has no connection with the real world. Unfortunately, if this animal is sentenced to death, it will be many years before it is carried out. Our pc culture and the involvment of dozens of lawyers will see to that.

With all the networks cutting into Obama at the White House, this pathetic pansy jokes about a ``shout out'' to an Indian leader, misstates that the Indian is a Congressional Medal of Honor winner. In fact, it's the Medal of Freedom, which has nothing to do with bravery in combat. This man is so far in over his head he can't go to the bathroom without a teleprompter. Then after embarrassing himself and the country for two and one half minutes, president pansy says he has sad news about thre shootings at Fort Hood. With time for more reflection, this pansy tells the FBI to get to the bottom of the issues that caused an Islamic terrorist to shout Allah Akbar before murderiing a dozen American soildiers in US soil. What next, Obama Care for Mohamad Atta's family, universial health care to the families of suicide bombers? This is the guy who promised that if we let him borrow three trillion dollars he would keep unemployment below 8 percent. It's 10.2 percent. Obama LIED. Several million Americans lost their jobs because OBAMA LIED. How about holding this pathetic excuse for a war president to the same standard as Bush. OBAMA LIED. Millions of American jobs have been lost because OBAMA LIED about his motivation for spending America into bankruptcy. The guy wants to bankrupt the country. This is his plan.

We need to find better way of uncovering these evil souls and putting them away. Oh goodness no, that would not be politically correct. When will enough of us wake up and smell the coffee?

All religion is based on fear and hatred. Evil souls? No, he had mental problems probably brought on by his religion, and the intollerance of others due to religion. When will people see just how destuctive all religious behaviour is?

A Cold War type of Infiltrator during the USSR`s days of spying on us.

SSDD type of event!!

Except maybe he was ordered to snap or so they assume.

I go with the terroist thought process.<<<< ((:~o) )))

The comment in this article may be true but also incorrect such as may be in this case (IMHO)....quote " a failure of the DOD to provide mental health care for soldiers".....The mental and emotional effects related to PTSD are still being studied along with the side effects of being seperated from family and living in a military environment along with military suicides....this particular Muslim is the most radical and fanatical of the Muslim movement that is being taken over by those that hate America and wish her people harm even at the expense of being martyred for their warped cause.....I know of several professional Muslims who are faithful to their religion but not to the extremist side like this man at Ft. Hood.....It appears that certain radical extremists are from an early age indoctrinated with doing to America just what we witness thru such dramatic and tragic happenings.....more of these people live amongst us and wish the same for America and we know of several plots that have been stopped in the last months and years by our gov't....the greatest problem that stems from an occurance like this is the negative response and stereotyping of other Muslims who do not adhere to such extremest beliefs....carrying a hate and prejudice for all who are recognized by a certain faith, skin color, sexual orientation or anything else that differs us as people, would not and is not the way to address or to allow being intollerant of those different from "us".....I think about the stereotyping and classification of those that differ on opinion (i. e. Question #1) and the hateful responses from both sides, but that topic is on other threads....IMHO this poor man's mind was controlled by an evil that he was brainwashed with and no mental health intervention would have easily detered this unfortunate event....May God rest the souls of those killed and be with those injured in this tragedy....

If all the "good" muslims do not support this extreme whacko stuff and terrorism please let us hear one say so. Just one! Until they start speaking up and throw out all their idiotic Imams spouting their filth - they are all terrorists.

The "war" in the Mid East, and even going back through the Desert Shield/Storm period; this Major Hasan was still a civilian. Why, then, did he even join the US military in the first place, if he harbored disagreements with US policy overseas? Not all of us agree with the US policies, or what the US is doing, but we do not go around seeking opportunities to murder innocents because of it.

The authorities were skeptical about Hasan months ago, and were "observing" him. I guess they did not observe him close enough, and send in a mole to find out his real intents! I'm sure he must have had some outside influence, too...maybe someone in the Fort Hood area who excited this psychiatrist (??) into carrying out an act of murdering and wounding so many were involved.

"The fact that Major Hasan is a Muslim may have played a part in his breakdown". (BDN Editorial above quote). Of course it did!! He was speaking Arabic, was an Arab (Palestinian), had direct association and feelings against the US policies, and killed and wounded those heading and deployed direct to the war zone in the Mid East! Now, the US military and government offices will be on high-alert, most likely interviewing all its Muslim/Islamic employees or sending out directives to them with some statement. Always crisis management...no preventive crisis management considered, huh? Seems that way. If the guy did not want to be deployed, there are avenues to undertake (which prevents him from promotions or deployed to a non-conflict area, set to his 201 File).

BeaverFood...my wife is Islamic and so is my son. They will not blog, as they are of the mindset blogging is not their desire, nor way of communicating, but it is for me, anyway. But, my wife did tell me to print this:

"Sir, and anyone thinking we, as Islamics, profess and abide with the extra-liberal and far-fetched, off-prescribed religious thought of terrorism or world takeover, us true Muslims do not, nor never hold dear to us, this mindset and we entirely dis-advocate the Verse of the Sword, Sura 9:5 and Jihad wholeheartedly. I speak for myself, my son, who are legal US citizens. My family in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai, advocate the same thought as myself, sir. The 'Sword' verses are complicated and run back centuries, and such as Christian religious thought is concerned, refer to your histories when Christian movements wanted to destruct the Muslims, and vice-versa. This kind of thinking does not bring peace to this world. Never did and never will. We here in California just heard last week of a Black (race) Imam in a Midwestern state being killed in a shootout with the US FBI; and had many advocates and followers totally against the US, the US government and US policies. They planned an overthrow of the US government, and were well on the way to doing it, until the time came to dissolve their activity. Sir, these people are Americans! And we, law-abiding Muslims get the discredit of being the ones to promote terrorism when your own kind are actually getting away with it here on the US soil! We cannot "throw out all their idiotic Imam's", sir...first they are not "ours", and second, it is the US government who should undertake this desperation of effort and protect us all"

Well, BeaverFood, there you have it. We do not disagree with you at all...but blaming all for the problems others are causing is not really the outlook or reason we should have.

Ejparsons..I agree with you. The only thing different from this guy was that he didn't strap a bomb on. He is a terrorist and instead of the media being politically correct and making this guy some sort of poor guy who was all confused is BS. Instead of spinning it as the wars made him do it, ptsd..etc...call it for what it is...a terrorist act. We will have some like him in the military and instead of being sensitive, maybe we should be doing more in depth investigating of muslims with beliefs such as this guy had exhibited. This was an act of terrosism..pure and simple and let's not be so afraid to say what it is.Every army has it's share of traitors and this was one. It wasn't good enough that all his schooling and training was paid for by his country, yet he chose to betray it and the people he served with. Instead of trying to analize him and his motives, call it straight..he was a traitor with intent to do his country harm. Hang him and more focus on the troops who were killed and wounded.

AMEN SISTER, AMEN AND SINCE I CAN'T TELL RADICAL MUSLIMS FROM A NON-RADICAL MUSLIMS THEN I WILL FEAR ALL OF THEM AND

IF ONE COMES TO MY DOOR OR UP TO MY CAR....MY POWDER IS DRY AND READY......

"POWERFUL"

LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thought you might like to read this letter to the editor ~ ever notice how some people just seem to know how to write a letter?..

This one sure does!

This was written by a Canadian woman, but oh how it also applies to the

U.S., U.K. and Australia

THIS ONE PACKS A FIRM PUNCH

Here is a woman who should run for Prime Minister!

Written by a housewife in New Brunswick , to her local newspaper. This is one ticked off lady.

'Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001 and have continually threatened to do so since?

Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan , across the Potomac from the nation's capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania ?

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

And I'm supposed to care that a few Taliban were claiming to be tortured by a justice system of the nation they come from and are fighting against in a brutal insurgency.

I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief of which is a crime punishable by beheading in Afghanistan .

I'll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.

I'll care when the cowardly so-called 'insurgents' in Afghanistan come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques and behind women and children.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blows themselves up in search of

nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs.

I'll care when the Canadian media stops pretending that their freedom of speech on stories is more important than the lives of the soldiers on the ground or their families waiting at home to hear about them when something happens.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a CANADIAN soldier roughing up an Insurgent terrorist to obtain information, know this:

I don't care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank:

I don't care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and 'fed special' food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being 'mishandled,' you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts:

I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled 'Koran' and other times 'Quran.' Well, Jimmy Crack Corn you guessed it,

I don't care!!

If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on to all your E-mail friends. Sooner or later, it'll get to the people responsible for this ridiculous behavior!

If you don't agree, then by all means hit the delete button. Should you choose the latter, then please don't complain when more atrocities committed by radical Muslims happen here in our great Country! And may I add:

'Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Soldiers don't have that problem.'

I have another quote that I would like to add, AND........I hope you forward all this.

One last thought for the day:

Only five defining forces have ever offered to die for you:

1. Jesus Christ

2. The British Soldier.

3. The Canadian Soldier.

4. The US Soldier, and

5. The Australian Soldier

One died for your soul, the other 4 for your freedom.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO PASS THIS ON, AS MANY SEEM TO FORGET ALL OF THEM.

AMEN!

8:46 PM, EJParsons, yes I agree, and so is Christianity. Ban all religion. They all promote insanity, irrational thinking, fear, and violence.

Anyone who commits a crime because of religious delusions should have the same crime committed against them, Christians included.

Ever heard of the "Crusades", WilliamDS? It IS happening...RIGHT NOW! (((reference above post))) This is part-reason for the despicable desperation of these Muslims brought upon themselves since the 1050's the world over. Immigration law enforcement will stop a lot of this problem, and better security in all aspects of social, civil and government levels should be stronger and more micromanaged.

It is not religion, William, it are people who destruct!

William - When was the late time you heard of a Christian screaming religious chats as he or she shot down innocent people? There is no comparison between Christianity and radical Islam. None whatsoever. The only reason you fear Christianity is because of you fear the truth of Jesus Christ and how He will judge you for your sinfulness. Jesus Christ is the most reviled name in any religion because He is the only true God.

EJ, last Tuesday. You can't discriminate against one religion. They are all irrational. Christians would be just as bad but most have lived in countries with laws longer.

William - By your statements, you have no clue what it means to be a Christian. Of course, you're no alone. Far too many don't have a clue, including some of the self-proclaimed Christians that comment on these threads. I hope someday you, and they, see the Light. No one deserves and eternity separated from God.

As far as I'm concern the raghead committed treason. He should stood up in front of a firing squad with a pork-chop hung around his neck.
