Maine governor: respect marriage vote

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine's governor says the judgment of voters must be respected following their decision this week on gay marriage and other questions on the ballot.

In his weekly radio address, Gov. John Baldacci says he was proud of Tuesday's heavy turnout. Baldacci, who supported the gay marriage law that was repealed at the polls, says he knows a lot of people were disappointed with the vote, but Mainers now have a better understanding of the issue.

Baldacci also says Mainers' rejection of two tax-control questions and one to repeal the school consolidation law show that they understand Maine has reduced its budget to match the economic times while protecting the state's core values.

In the Republican response, Sen. Walter Gooley of Farmington pays tribute to those who have served in the military as Veteran's Day approaches.

schoonerdog, exactly what I was thinking

MagicCity: Fortunately the gay and lesbian citizens of Maine will continue to be born, raised and live in Maine. We have been here for years and years and years....... and will continue to be ........ We are here.... get used to it. We and our straight supporters have the same freedom of speech rights as you. Wonder how much whining would have been heard if the NO side had won......

Would you support Civil Unions for All and leave the term "marriage" to unions presided over only by clergy?

As the older generation moves on, it is clear that the younger generation was very supportive of the "NO" vote. The next time around it will pass.

Wrong free2bee straights don't have the same rights to freedom of speech as gays, you can call us names but if we call you names it's called hate crimes. Like calling a person a bigot because of their beliefs and they don't want to change them for gays, the same could be said for gays, you don't want to change your beliefs for straight people do you? so we are all equal on that point. Now thats equality for gays that they didn't acknowledge.

Thankfully , the good people of Maine Voted the right Way so were not a flake state like Mass.

yep- and hopefully they will all move to either Mass or Canada

Maine now appears, even to the strange world of Utah, as backward. Religion has no exclusivity when it comes to performing marriages, and none can be forced to marry anyone under their teachings, however, civil marriages which do fall under the Constitution of the United States, which does not discriminate in it's wording, does not prohibit same sex marriage, matter of fact it does not even mention marriage. Therefore, one can only presume separation of church and state, which is a catchphrase, is being abused again as religious beliefs are being interjected across the line into state business...however, let the flow be the other way and screams of anguish and athiesm fly fourth....enjoy your victory, I say to all 38 states, including mine which passed bigoted propositions....enjoy it for the time...as the day is coming when the Supreme Court of the United States, rules against such self pomposity....

Look at what they past in Washington State Maine will be next civil unions for gays an domestic partner ( as long as one is 62an older) for senior citizens an both groups have the same rights as married couples do

RevJimBilly your a bigot, something only straight people have been accused of lately.

free2bee were you said would you support well in Calf lawyers in court for an agense gay marriage have a greeded the same thing. it was on yahoo news

WinFromOOb and RevJimBilly: You are correct; it is only a matter of time before this will be settled by U.S. Supreme Court and that will be the final arbiter of this, legally. It must be difficult for those whose lives are impacted by this, and for their families, but, unfortunately, fairness and equality is often only won after a long protracted struggle. We have seen that over and over again in this country.

ree2bee: If you can understand the poster at 12:16, you are doing better than I am.

Sorry, but this is a Civil Rights issue now, and the Federal Government will soon intervene so that all families will be treated equally.

chersully 2000 What i was trying to say to him. would you support civil unions for all an leave term marriage to unions preside over only by clergy. like i said in Calf. lawyers FOR an AGENCE gay marriage in court the case came up with the idea have ALL civil unions Now if they wanted a cermony they (man an women) could go to church an have it done but the state would still call it civil union. clear enought ??

wollydevil: Hope you get your answer concerning civil unions from the person you addressed your question to.

jadesgirl so if a straight man and woman un married, pool their income, buy a home, have children , they are not a family because the parents are not married?

If we are to assume there truly is a "Wall of Separation" between church and state, the Supreme Court has no bearing in this issue. Much as the church cannot tell the government what to do or one religion be taught exclusively in public schools. the federal government has no business telling the church to perform marriages which are against their basic tenets.

People seem to forget the Supreme Court's job is to interpret the constitutionality of laws. Our Constitution is a 4 page document which states what our government CAN'T do to us, not what it can force. This is an issue for the states to decide one by one. I would say those who are unhappy with the outcome move, but anywhere this issue has gone to the voters, it has been voted down. Maine is not "backward" in this sense, actually right in line with the rest of the nation.

Perhaps instead of fighting to use the term "marriage", the lobby would be better off spending it's money to for the full legal protection of civil unions and to force the health insurance companies and other entities to recognize them.

According to the law, they aren't. At least for insurance, next of kin, medical issues, and so on.

Of course, they are a "family", just not in the laws eyes. I don't know about how "God" see them, but it would appear they aren't a family in "his" eyes, either. And how about that license to procreate? Apparently the family in your example figured that out without a proper Christian marriage ceremony and blessing.....

HampdenMom~~~"If we are to assume there truly is a "Wall of Separation" between church and state, the Supreme Court has no bearing in this issue. Much as the church cannot tell the government what to do or one religion be taught exclusively in public schools. the federal government has no business telling the church to perform marriages which are against their basic tenets."

I be just a simple boy, but I thought it was pretty clear on the Vote on #1 that no church was going to have to Marry anyone they didn`t want to.

And what the heck do you mean>Quote>"If we are to assume there truly is a "Wall of Separation" between church and state,"

Do you know the Contitution or NOT???

And this quote>>"This is an issue for the states to decide one by one."

Is that how the Women and Blacks of this Country got there Equlity??<<

And this hateful talk>>>"I would say those who are unhappy with the outcome move, but anywhere this issue has gone to the voters, it has been voted down. Why don`t you move??? So who cares about other states, they don`t understand the Constitution either.

And This quote>>"Maine is not "backward" in this sense, actually right in line with the rest of the nation

Maine Vote on this was only 53% hardly a mandate, it facts it begs for another Vote. As much as this seems to bother you. I DON`t CARE !!

Go sooth yourself in you God whatever yours is.

My God voted NO so again There is NO compromise on Equality.

Maybe Hampden should be voted off the map.

You know a small minority possibly could do that.

And then what shoe would you be wearing the right or the left.

Have a nice day Bigot (: } )

Do you Yes`ers have a clue how many freedoms you enjoy today could be taken away from YOU.

Just by a minority getting enough signature for a Refer:

You know them real popular things like Hunting, Snowmobiling, 4 Wheeling, Mortorcyling (please that one alone for me please) smoking, drinking, fartingin public, no looking at women anymore, no more looking at mens butts yada yada yada.

Do you have a clue about that.

You wanna talk about a boycott of Maine Products.

Well that mite be better than the alternative. Huuummuummm !!!!!

Have a nice day~~gotta go think what mite be the right / right to take away tomorrow.

((:~{o ) )))))) & red /str/m &

"Marriage is a sacred religious rite? " Then get the State out of the marriage business. and then churches can choose to marry whomever they wish to marry.

ricts1 are you responding to us?

BTW~~~Wouldn`t IT be nice for YOU if ALL the World was as Perfect as your DREAMS

How dare you tell a LifeTime citizen of this State to Move <<<

Some Class You Have~~NOPE NO CLASS in your home in HAMPTEN~~ spanking for you

ElectraGlide: They must think, in their deluded minds, that they are better than someone else in telling someone to move. Well, guess what.....it's not going to happen. No one has to move anywhere if they do not want to. Those thinking otherwise should crawl back into their caves.

@Scintillate

"you can call us names but if we call you names it's called hate crimes"

How many derogatory names for "heterosexual person" have you been called? Can you give us an example?

You No one one peole have got to get over it. It's over. I didn't get my way on 6 of the questions but gee wiz. What am I gonna do. Nothing. We have to accept the outcomes, however they may have turned out. There is an old saying but I can't say it.here.

It's a good thing they allow the republicans to respond to the Governors weekly radio address. Someone had to thank the Veterans.

@iliketobike

If people are calling you names than you may want to consider being a little more discrete. I don't run around flalailing all over my wife in public.

How many derogatory names for "heterosexual person" have you been called? Can you give us an example?

Breeder

Rabbit

Brude

Sow

and several others which I can't print here.

Actually every group has derogatory names... even the honky majority.

Homosexicals will always be around and they will always be abnormal just like they've been since the beginning of time.

What are the South-coastal towns in Maine going to do in the summer months when they find out about the homsexual vote? NOTHING! Ogung

Maine survivor

They must all be heading for the Cape to join their comrads.

Even more illustrations of why Maine is considered back-woods.

To Electraglide: You misunderstand my post. I was not telling anyone to go, simply stating that all states where this issue has gone to vote, the outcome has been the same. I have many, many gay friends and a few family members. You know that extra set of "parents" most kids find in at the home of a close friends? You guessed it! My best friend growing up had a mom who was a lesbian and in a long term, committed relationship with her partner. Instead of having an "extra" mom and dad, I got two "extra" moms.

As to my post on the Constitution, do your research. The actual "Wall of Separation" came about later from a letter written to Jefferson. The Constitution simply states (in basic terms) that the government will not tell the church how to preach nor will it regulate the religion people follow. I actually know my constitution quite well and one of the major points in it is the majority of powers are granted to the states. Women's right to vote actually WAS decided on a state by state level.

It is interesting to me you read my post as you choose and interpret it as hate speak, although I called no names, invoked no gods and did not actually refer to my vote at all then you have the nerve to refer to me as a bigot. Try re-reading what I originally wrote with a more open mind, such as all "No on 1" supporters asked the "Yes on 1" supporters to have.

Hampdenmom~~~~I broke one of my own rules. My initial instinct was to let the matter go with you as the Constitution is not something I have the knowledge to go on a line by line argument with anyone.

So i apoligize for that. And will re-read what you said that led me to believe that you voted Yes on 1.

Later

captainandy and all Yes`ers~~~You have no Integratiy or Class.

You are like a gang member on a basketball team. (team Yes and team NO) OFcourse your on the Yes team.

Now you won.

So for a sports team it is just the norm for the winners to chest thump and whatever else they want to do that would be the norm in a competive sport. RIGHT or WRONG ???<<<

But there is just of couple of things to consider here.

1. You were on a gang team of hateful bigoted and ignorant of the norms of the game.

2. The other team was not a gang of thugs and knew the norms of the game.

3. The No team was an underdog and of course the Yes team have been the Champions for along time (champions of playing bigoted ignorant ball)

4. Your bigoted hateful ignorant style of play has been evidenced for a very long time in History of the game you play.

5. The Yes team has been intimated, been bashed and treated like dirt when not on / off the playing field for along time.

So now you won a League Championship and think the season is done.

And like the norms are in sports when you see or have a chance to, you ridicule the other team even after victory.

But here is the catch ole (captainandy) this is not a ballgame like football.

This is real life with real people.

You are a ignorant hateful bigot, for even after winning you come around here and treat real human beings like manure under your shoes. Not even that good by you and your kind that are posting today and since the Vote and your teams Victory.

You treat people that support the rights of All people that are not even Gay People the same way.

Your morals, dignaty, believes and thought process are no better than a mindless retarded Sheep with your mindless flock ,

And the way you treat other Humans on this planet is no different than the Roman Empire and there self-rightous people that made it a sporting game of slaughtering any people they deemed inferior during the Roman Colosium Games of destruction and death. Even watching while people were being eaten alive by Lions. All the while laughing eating and just being at what they thought was a sport of slaughtering innocent people.

Yes captain of bigotry and hate that is what you are and probably always will be.

It is laughable that you would think you and your kind believe in a God.

Because I know my Spirit of God never would treat any person like scum of the earth.

Have a nice day even knowing as I and many others do. You do not really in the blackness of your heart care what anyone that does not see things your way even matters in life. The classic definition of a Big Black Hearted Hateful Bigot and not just to Gay People Either.

That great thing though is ((( I DON`T CARE ))) and neither do 47% of the rest of the State of Maine would be my bet !!!!

For all throughout Mankinds History you Bigots have been around.

And All you have ever done for Mankind is Cause the World Shame and more Shame.

I guess that is it for the moment until you raise you fat stupid face again. ((:~O) ))))) DAng I thought that was pretty decent of my !!!!

I read a bizarre theory once that suggested that cromagnons and neanderthals lived for a while on earth together , at the same time

I think this is the situation we are in

I better check my comicbook

Scintillate: There seems to be confusion about the Hate Crimes laws...... is covers acts of violence that are motivated by hate.... perhaps you should read the law. Hate speech in the United States is actually protected as free speech unless it incites actions that cause harm to another. The name calling ...... didn't do any of that in my post. I have three children from a previous marriage so I also am considered a "breeder"...... and don't find that nearly as offensive as being called a "lezzie" or "dyke" .... or some of the more graphic descriptions.

When I got married it was not in a church.... it was a Civil Marriage presided over by a Notary Public in a family member's back yard .... it was recognized by the state of Maine as a legal, binding contract .... there was no religious connotation afforded to it in any way, shape or form...... many couples choose to be married without any church or clergy officiating and they are no less "married" in the eyes of law than those who choose a church wedding.

wollywolf: did have to read your post a couple of times along with your explanation to chersully .... guess you are saying that they want to drop the term marriage all together from the law and call all of them Civil Unions ..... fine by me.

Actually, no. You just can't call someone a "fag" or whatever WHILE YOU ARE COMMITTING A CRIME AGAINST THEM FOR SIMPLY BEING GAY. If you do, then THAT'S a "hate crime", because it doesn't just impact THAT person; it terrorizes a whole group of people. That you don't seem to comprehend this is really, really sad.

Who the heck was doing that ? Come off it, lady, if you are SO utterly clueless what this was about after all this time you don't deserve to have a vote.

"People seem to forget the Supreme Court's job is to interpret the constitutionality of laws. Edith, look, what about the churches that wanted to wed these people ? What about THEIR right to ? Or don't they count ? OH, I get it - it's all about YOUR religion controlling everybody's lives, imposing IT'S will on EVERY OTHER church.

Perhaps instead of pi$$ing away 3/4 of a million dollars the Catholic Church should have spent it on keeping their own churches OPEN in Maine ?

Or teaching reading comprehension to some of the people that post here.
