HERMON, Maine — A fire that swept through an industrial building in Hermon kept crews from several area towns busy Monday night.

The cause and origin of the fire at Carmel Electric Inc. in the Freedom Industrial Park were undetermined as of 9 p.m., but crews had the flames contained. Cleanup was expected to continue well into the evening, according to dispatchers.

The fire was reported sometime after 6 p.m., prompting firefighters from Hermon, Hampden, Bangor and Levant to respond. At 6:30 p.m., flames and thick smoke could be seen creeping from the eaves of the large aluminum building.

Crews attacked the flames with hoses from high atop a ladder truck. By 7 p.m., the fire was largely out. The building remained intact but was significantly damaged.

It wasn’t clear whether anyone was working inside the building when the fire started, but no injuries were reported at the scene. Carmel Electric is a commercial and industrial installer of electrical systems and wiring.

The owner was notified and arrived at the scene shortly before 7 p.m. He declined to comment.
