Authorities suspicious of Down East fires

Washington County officials on Tuesday were investigating a series of grass and brush fires that may have been set in Pembroke and Perry.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that fire departments from Pembroke, Perry, Charlotte, Robbinston and Calais were called either to Ridge Road in Pembroke or stood by while other fires were located and extinguished.

Pembroke Fire Chief Robert Barr said that at least two locations were involved and that the Maine Forest Service was called in to investigate.

Calls to the local Maine Forest Service warden were not returned.

All the fires were believed to have been in fields and possibly involved hay bales, according to Barr.

I listened to this being toned out. Just as the departments arrived on scene another tone for another grass fire elsewhere.

If the person responsible for starting these fires are reading this then understand something. A fire, no matter how "safe" you

may think it is could spread rapidly into a residential district, involve a home and kill people. Young children trapped in a house

with no way out because you. Think about it!!!

i for one question if there may be a connection between these fires, and the rash of unexplained structure fires in the area, such as my barn on the ridge rd. in robbinston for example.
