Maine to seek owners of forgotten WW II bonds

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — The state of Maine is trying to find residents holding government war bonds issued during the World War II era.

State officials estimate Mainers hold between $65 million and $70 million in war bonds.

The federal government estimates that across the country more than $16 billion in World War II bonds are unclaimed.

State Rep. Herb Adams and state Treasurer David Lemoine are asking the U.S. Treasury Department to provide the state with a list of Mainers who bought war bonds that have not been cashed in.

The Portland Press Herald says the state would then work through Lemoine’s department to find those people or their heirs and link them with the federal government so they could claim the money.

The bonds reached face value in the 1980s.

David Lemoine lost $20-million of our money on a junk bond scheme called "Mainsail II". Did the taxpayers ever get their money back?

Must be money in it for the State of Maine.
