Gun safety courses readily available

Firearms safety courses are offered through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s education program and through commercial businesses.

Firearms instruction is a prerequisite to obtaining a hunting license or a concealed weapons permit in Maine.

The 12-hour minimum DIF&W hunter education course includes classroom instruction by trained and certified volunteer instructors, and includes proper handling, rifle and shotgun, survival and first aid, hunter responsibility, map and compass, landowner relations, the “Irrevocable Decision” video and a course handbook.

Besides hunter safety courses, several National Rifle Association courses are offered through commercial ventures across Maine. Some of the possibilities include learning to be a range safety officer, reloading metallic and shotgun shells, personal protection, firearms and the law, refuse to be a victim, basic rifle, basic pistol, home firearm safety, NRA instructor training, and competitive shooting and coaching.

Check with a local gun club, gun dealer or the DIF&W Web site for course schedules.

We offer private and group handgun training at Western Maine Fish & Game and Cabela's. Visit www.MaineCWPtraining.com for details

I found that the required course for a concealed weapons permit was extremely useful and well worth the time and cost. If more people complete a formal handgun training course of this nature, and then carry a firearm as part of our normal routine, the level of violent crimes will be reduced. The police can only do so much today, and there's nothing wrong with personal and family protection.

Who's the brainiac that wrote this story? "Check with ........DIFW website for course schedules" Well, I clicked on the link provided and guess what - in the entire State of Maine there's not a single course currently even scheduled by DIFW.
