Richardson plans to run for governor

AUGUSTA, Maine — John Richardson, a former speaker of the House and economic development commissioner in the Baldacci administration, became the latest person to join the crowded field of candidates hoping to become Maine’s next governor.

Richardson formally announced his candidacy on Monday, although he has been discussed for months as a likely contender for the Democratic nomination.

Richardson, 52, resigned from his position as commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development in order to campaign for governor. Deputy Commissioner Thaxter Trafton was named acting commissioner on Monday.

Richardson joins more than 20 other candidates — including seven other Democrats, six Republicans and two Green Independents — who have filed paperwork indicating plans to run for the Blaine House in November 2010.

Richardson pledged to focus on job development, making government more efficient and effective, and capitalizing on Maine’s natural resources to help the state recover from the recession.

“This state’s economy was once built on exploiting those resources,” Richardson said in prepared remarks. “Its future will be built on harnessing and preserving them. I offer Maine people a comprehensive vision for bringing together economic development, environmental protection and renewable energy.”

A lawyer, Richardson served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1998 to 2006, the last two years as speaker.

In addition to Richardson, there are two other former House speakers running as Democrats: former Attorney General Steven Rowe and Elizabeth “Libby” Mitchell, who presides as Senate president.

The other Democrats who have filed paperwork with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices are Donna Dion of Biddeford, Rep. Dawn Hill of York, Eriq Manson of Old Orchard Beach, Rosa Scarcelli of Portland and Peter Truman of Old Orchard Beach.

Who better to drive the final nail in Maine's proverbial coffin than a lawyer/former state rep/Baldacci crony?

John Richardson has been a flaming failure in the current DECD position. His department has no detailed accountability, and this would be proven if audited. He has hired friends & family into overpaid positions at DECD - Jimmy Cook and Pat Eltman. (What ethics?) He's already sleeping with the unions and he certainly isn't qualified to lead our State of Maine... hence, this campaign should be interesting.

A democrat as an economic developer? Talk about an oxymoron.

Govt 2big is right again.. to add to that richardson is another political hack like most of the folks running...right now the state needs someone with business backround that actually ran a business...also let's have a non lawyer....someone from the private sector with no union ties...only former legilator with some common sense is Peter Mills...he might be better to be on the cabinet of a gov to help him or her get stuff done with the legilative folks..

Ho hum, another self serving dumb dumb wants to be governor. This one is a real bad penny if you check is history and record.

Start by dumping the corrupt flow of government support into wind farms and put Joe the Weatherizer back to work.

Looks like the Mafia is involved in wind - see the Boston Herald: http://www.bostonherald.com/business/general/view.bg?articleid=1212055

Gov2Big maybe you should step up to the plate seeing how you have all the answers!!!

Richardson is the worst possible candidate. He is from the inner circle of democrat power players. Everything will be business as usual with this guy. Candidate number 22 is not a welcome addition to the race.

Here's how to pick Maine's next governor...(this works most elections - Maine sheeple are predictable)

1. Do they have a "D" after their name?

2. Are they a member of the bar?

3. Tax-and-spend?

4. Augusta insider?

5. Never really had what ya call a "real job".

Add 'em up and you have the next occupant of the Blaine House!

Before stating Maine residents are predictable go to the following link and look at the party breakdown for Maine's governors.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governors_of_Maine

A question for Mr. Miller: You listed all the democrats running. Why not a list of ALL the people running?

Is there "Economic and Community Development" in Maine?

OrangeCyclist - I looked at the breakdown...the last 16 years prove my point. Angus King=moonbat. John Baldacci=über-moonbat.

Jock was no better, Joe Brennan was okay.

OK This is a joke right???? Baldacci's economic development commissioner runnoing for Govenor!!!! LOL The state has done so well in his hands already right! John Richardson PLEASE GO AWAY!

Richardson has been in the political scene in Augusta for the last decade. What in the last 10 years has been positive coming out of Augusta? He has nothing notworthy regarding any economic properity.

He's been DECD heads of long enough to make a positive impact on the Maine business scene and has done nothing.

Is this the best Maine has to offer???

Nice advertisement for the democratic candidates for governor...way to be 'objective' and stay silent on the other candidates - not!

All 21 of these people don't have what Maine needs. Hire a non lawyer. Get someone in the state house that will help the people of Maine instead of lining their own pockets with our money.
