State probes Medway blazes

MEDWAY, Maine — Firefighters were called Sunday night to two adjacent fires, one of which gutted an abandoned home, and a state investigator said Monday they are being investigated.

“Anytime you have two buildings side by side catch fire and they don’t have power to them,” it raises questions, said Sgt. Tim York of the State Fire Marshal's Office. “I don’t like to use the word suspicious. It’s an active investigation.”

Firefighters from Medway were alerted about 8 p.m. Sunday to a fire in an abandoned home near 988 Medway Road (Route 157), Assistant Fire Chief Brian McLaughlin said Monday.

The back side was in flames when fire crews arrived, he said. “We immediately called Madawaska and East Millinocket for mutual aid.”

Another abandoned house next door caught fire, but there was minimal damage to that structure, York said.

It took 20 to 30 minutes to knock down the fire, but hours to ensure that it was extinguished, he said.

“There was a lot of digging and cutting holes in walls and rafters,” he said. The burned structure’s “front side has smoke and water damage and the back side is completely gone.”

No injuries were reported, and Medway fire crews returned to their station around midnight.

Anyone with information about the fires can call the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 626-3870.

WOW that's quite a ways away isn't it? Madawaska that is.....NICK where are you? Might be nice if this reporter could get the quotes right! Seriously?? Madawaska? Look at a map honey....Mattawamkeag is 5 minutes away...Madawaska on the other hand is a good 2 1/2 hours! Too far away for mutual aid wouldn't ya think?

Well I sure hope that if my place ever burns down that they call East Mill before they call Madawaska cause there will be no hope for saving my place or any of its contents... omg. Do we need to get more fire trucks???

Where is Maryann Legasse? A reporter that you could count on for the story and getting it right!

Wow, 4th fire in only a few years... I sure hope the fire marshall is investigating that!! Brian Theriault's place burned first. The camp ou behind Stephanie Vandine's burnt next and now the 2 houses across from John Doe's... Looks like there is a serial arsonist in that area and Barney and Andy still can't catch em...

Maryann Legasse - a top shelf reporter, for sure!

Immediately called for additional help???? Cough cough yea right!

what about the 3 fires on Beech Street in East Millinocket? No body asked any questions about these Sgt York
