After President Obama’s meeting with 386 tribal Indian nations, (“Obama to renew relations with Indians,” BDN, Nov. 6), the president stated: “I get it. I’m on your side.” It would be reassuring if the president could listen to former Attorney General Ramsey Clark in his support to free Leonard Peltier. The justice system allowed “fabricated and utterly misleading circumstantial evidence” in his 1977 trial. Much essential background pertaining to this case was excluded, including much of the government-instigated violence in and around Pine Ridge Reservation. It seems sadly suspicious that even his appeals have been turned down.

President Obama, as a new voice of American government, can certainly soften not only Native American but also all American government paranoia.

According to Barack Obama’s own admittance, he is an “outsider,” who is connecting with the struggles of all Americans. In the name of justice, President Obama can commute that sentence.

Let’s make sure Leonard Peltier will not be forgotten.

Snowe: It’s time

While traveling through southern Maine last week, Sen. Snowe stated that she has argued against what she calls “artificial time limits” on health care reform. The issue was first raised 100 years ago by Theodore Roosevelt. Our current health care debate is almost a year old now.

She also told constituents that she opposes a public option and favors a trigger option. I think that Anthem has pulled that trigger by suing the state to ensure that its high profits continue. This action should make it clear to her that affordability and increased coverage are not priorities for them. The insurance industry as a whole has already promised that rates will increase because the penalties imposed on people who can’t afford insurance won’t be heavy enough. If this isn’t enough to convince the senator that the need for a public option has already been triggered, then I would like to hear what it would take.

She spoke about her concern that the most commonly purchased policy for small-business owners is one with a $15,000 deductible. I am glad that she understands the kind of burden that places on small-business owners in Maine. I hope the ad that appeared in the Bangor Daily News Nov. 13 will help reinforce for her that we have waited long enough for reform. Denying the public option in favor of a trigger option will only delay relief even longer and force many policyholders to drop coverage when Anthem proceeds with its promised rate increases.

Emergency ignored

At the Legislative Council Meeting on Nov. 15 an appeal was made to the council’s decision on Oct. 15 to not allow into the session the bill to prohibit mandatory vaccinations. The appeal was to allow the bill into the session; not about paranoia, not about vaccine safety or individual rights over health choices. It was to allow the bill into the session where those topics and more could be discussed.

This council allowed “emergency measures” like Rep. Perry’s bill concerning malt liquor on a golf course, or “An Act to Regulate the Transportation of Firewood” into the session. But a bill that generated public interest illustrated by Rep. Pingree’s acknowledgment regarding the intense lobbying resultant of her prior vote and demonstrated by 75 people, some traveling from up to three hours away, to attend the hearing itself, didn’t merit the deliberations that would result if the bill was allowed in.

These public servants ignored their constituents; seeing fit to waste time and money while junking the concerns of the public.

Sen. Courtney observed 19 minutes of discussion indicating the need to allow the bill in, commenting that they were entering a work session. Useful that meeting was, though. Rep. Berry taught us that “mandatory doesn’t mean involuntary.” And we saw first-hand demonstrations of ascendancy and arrogance as Sen. Marrache, Sen. Bartlett and Rep. Berry tossed a puck of malarkey around distracting from the topic at hand; allowing the bill into the session.

2010 cannot come soon enough.

Time served

Amber Cummings, the woman sentenced for killing her husband in Belfast, has already served her time: 10 years of spousal abuse. She took a potential terrorist out of circulation single-handedly. Set her free to raise her daughter, wish her luck, and give her a medal for valor.

I've got to say that with some thought, I agree with Jerry Metz. Let her go - she's been through enough.

The Constitution is 17 pages long.

The House Healthcare Bill is over 2,000 pages long.

Whose SPECIAL INTERESTS are being protected by Obama ?

SEIU tops the list.

Andy Stern, president of the SEIU, leads the White House visitors list with 22 visits.

What DO they talk about together?

The unions desperately need government health care because they are in trouble.

They've promised too much:

Huge benefit packages and massive retirement pensions have unions scrambling to unload the burden.

And guess who is the lucky recipient of that burden under Obama's plan?

YOU.

Listen and see for yourself the CLOSE RELATIONSHIP Obama has with SEIU -

Health care is about PAYBACK, NOTHING MORE !!

"Workers of the world unite" is the rallying cry of Marxist revolutionaries.

Imagine that... Marxist revolutionaries.

Leonard Peltier will get 'justice' after he wins the Powerball. Remember, when it comes to justice, well, we're all over it.

Free Leonard Peltier?

He executed a wounded Federal officer. Under the current administration, that should merit him a Presidential Pardon AND the "Medal of Honor", right Mr. Obama?

Shelley Mountain: REFORM YES, GOVERNMENT DOMINATION OF OUR LIVES NO!!

Wing-nuts want Amber Cummings to go to prison for a long time, yet don't want to pay for her time in jail. Typical cut and run conservatives.

Do a little research on Leonard Pelitier and his gang. They also murdered a woman from their own gang and left her body in a ditch because they thought she was talking to the Feds. A native woman.... one of their own. No one will admit to seeing him pull the trigger on the FBI agents but he was there and took part. He is where he belongs. He is a violent felon and domestic terrorist.... not a Native activist.

There is no excuse for murder. There are always alternatives. A phone can be picked up just as easily as a gun.

Ms. Mountain seems to be very popular with the BDN editors - two of her letters published just this week, both representing far-left views.

Please move to the center, BDN,

Cynthia Rosen, what do you expect? They want to put poor people who can't afford their brand of health care in jail, do you expect them to even consider a bill that will not allow them to put you in jail for not acquiescing to a flu vaccination?

Lets make sure Leonard Peltier AND Amber Cummings stay right where they are! I don't dare how wronged or scared you think you are, that doesn't justify murdering a defenseless person in cold blood. Amber Cummings made a very bad decision in her choice of a husband, but fortunately, there's a legal remedy for that and it's called divorce accompanied by a protection order and if necessary, move to a place far away. She was understandably worried that if she had chosen that path that he would have come after her anyway, and if he had and she shot him in self defense then I'd have no problem with her walking free. But she didn't have the courage to do the right thing and instead murdered someone in cold blood to solve her problems. She needs several years in jail to think about more appropriate methods of problem resolution.

ElectraGlide @ 8:04, so when do you think murder is unacceptable? Apparently these two people have every right to take the law into their own hands and just shoot people they do not agree with. Where do you draw the line? Can a 'no on 1' person shoot a 'yes on 1' person because their rights are continuing to be violated?

oh my mAineAc<>I draw the line where the line IS<

Now have you done any research on other commutings of other crimes<<

and for now even though I do not like to talk about shooting people

as you opened the doorI would have much more concern that YES would Shoot NO<<

You know I have a very good friend in Bagdad that is a civilian employee.

My friend a women and her friend another women (not Gay) were planning a vaca trip.

My friend wrote me yesterday and told me the trip was off because her friend had to come back to the States to bury her college age grade A student in the Ground.

He died of a vicious attack by a group of thugs in a car that drove by and yelled things at this college kid.

The college kid yelled back and the car came back and the gang kicked this kid in the head until he was dead.

I am still waiting to hear what happened to this College boys Girlfriend that was there at the time.

Now there is ONE line for ME<<

So Electra, to be consistent, I suppose you think the murdering gang members should go free because in their minds they were justifiably PO'd at the college kid for having the sheer audacity to yell back at them? Do the crime, do the time.

Yep Jeffrey you just continue to make light of that one.

I think I know what a lot of people on here will think

what I would do<<

I'm sure we'll find that the disadvantaged youths referred to as "gang members" come from a whole class of oppressed people with many legitimate grievances going back over 200 years, and they saw the uppity college boy yelling back at them as someone who would undoubtedly be a future oppressor, and that just made them "snap" so they decided to exercise their right to free speech to ALL, guaranteed to them by the US Constitution, by kicking him in the head until he was dead. You hypocrites who want to take away their right to free speech, but think you have the right to disagree and even demonstrate against our Presidents health plan for all, should feel nothing but SHAME! Free the disadvantaged youths!

There, now I know how it feels to be Electraglide.

I've been called a bigot before, so here I go...

Reparations are fraud. The proud Native Americans have been held hostage to the Governmental hand outs for too long and it hasn't benefitted them one bit. They are Americans, and as such have all the rights, freedoms, and responsibillities that come along with that title. As for Health care, a private payers system is the only system that will succeed. We are in this mess because the Government has already intruded too much into private enterprise, and we have too many people including illegal aliens, taking advantage of our medical provisions but contributing nothing in return.

BTWthe story happens to be True

And I can sit here and tell you until I am blue in the face that if I ever saw them gangs members that all I want to do Right Now is Shoot them ALL Right Dang In The f*&^^%$F$F^&* Center of there F)(*&^%$#%$&^ HEADs.

GET IT A^*&*(&^%$$<<

But we really do not know do WE until we have to DEAL with that Thang DO WE<<

TurkeyTalker, I love that term "native American," to designate those with ancestors who were here more than 600 years ago. As far as I'm concerned, I'm a native American, you're a native American, and even Electraglide is a native American, and none of us, or anyone else either, should be getting reparations for things that happened before any of us were born. Equality for ALL US citizens, whether they are naturalized, or second generation Americans, or have ancestors dating back hundreds or even thousands of years. We all have the same right to live here. Nobody deserves any special treatment, period.

So Electra, I imagine you're now feeling similar to how the family and friends of the executed FBI agent feel about people like you suggesting that his murderer go free because he was an "activist," engaged in trying to right old injustices. And if the murdering wife who just "snapped so should go free, why can't you offer those oppressed feeling gang members the same compassion you have for her? Wouldn't it just be simpler to stick to the law and if someone murders someone in cold blood (execution style or while they are sleeping), the law/penalties regarding murder be applied to them?

TurkeyTalker<>NO one I know is a bigot on everything.

I don`t think I am going to deal with Healthcare today

I don`t think I am going to be able to deal with the Native American issue

As my blood is Way way over the boiling point w/Jefferey and the Bigotry of the Indian issue

As being part Mic Mac and having my friends friends outragious death to deal with

I think the best thing for me is go blow a bunch more leaves.

and take a TO on this issue.

"Native American" is a fuzzy designation. For Indians, "Originals" would be more accurate, though apparently there exists some differences of opinion among academics as to who was here first.

Ms. Rosen: you are correct! I wIsh the BDN put the same scrutiny on Augusta that it's trying put on gun laws. It really is a lapdog.

TheTruth: I won't want Cummings to go to prison. But I will gladly pay for long sentences. Put a prison in my back yard...just keep them in it!

When migrations began and people pushed other people out and the masses or the strong moved in, did any of them get reparations? When we use the American Indian as an example, when one tribe pushed out another and took over their land and territory, did they pay for damages done? No! The movement of settlers into Indian lands was no different than the migrations of people across Asia and other lands. Why do we feel obligated to pay anyone anything?

The path of human history is a desultory effort at becoming civilized. Some of our ancestors weren't very civilized, but we continue to try, with occasional success. It's not a realistic concept to give America back to the Indians, but we cannot allow them to be mistreated, either.

So we have can not give all the land back / no chit

We have can`t have them mistreated either.

My original statement if read was if America took care of Germany and Japan to help them get on there feet.

Why haven`t we done it for the Indians??

I say Bigotry plays a big part in the way we treat Indians<<

I see maybe >Jeffrey< did a minute of research.

Why are there so many people like Amnesty International trying to get Leonard out of jail.

And the two others that were tried for the crime that were there were acquitted.

The government cannot prove that Leonard executed the agents. They now say he was there just like the two others.

And Leonard says he was there.

And we have never ever ever heard about the FBI or ATF do anything wrong or do a cover up, yep just never.

So >>Jeffrey<< trying to make it feel the two agents are part of my family doesn`t fly with me as with other people in the US or the World.

And if>>Jeffery<< you want to feel about something try feeling what it was like for the women in her situation. I know you would of done it different because obviously you are Perfect.<< And there has never been any commuting of sentences RIGHT<<

And OH Jeffery<

And the American Indian hasn`t been hated for a couple of hundred years. It is all just a dream to them.

Oh Yeah, land has always been taken in History just like the Indians were.

And the Indian Reservations all look like Japan and Germany after a couple hundred years of helping them Out.

Jeffery I fully agree NOBODY DESERVES SPECIAL TREATMENT but, the indigenous people have had "special treatment" and all of it bad, since the europeans arrived here. If you doubt this, I suggest you travel to Gallup New Mexico, or Rapid City South Dakota to see how "special" we still treat them.

I may be mistaken but dont the indians have the right to leave the reservations? They have the same rights as everyone else today plus more. we need to all be americans and equal.

Shockin....I was thinking the same thing. Why does anyone have to treat anyone specially? No one has said Indians must stay on the reservations. They are as able as anyone to do anything they wish. Maybe they, in cases, have become too dependant on govt handouts and expect to be taken care of? That isn't the proud Indian that came before. As for them being treated terribly, what ethnic group hasn't been treated like crap at some point in time?To name a few, Chinese, Irish, Italians, Jews, African Americans and am sure I can add to the list.

well meant government programs always seem to have bad effects. we will have racism as long as we treat people differently because of the color of thier skin. that goes for special rights as well as equal rights

Harry, You've got to be kidding me when you say "all of it bad!" Right here in Maine the Indians got millions in land claims settlement money. I could stand a little of that "bad treatment" myself!

I agree wholeheartedly with the posters just above who question why present day Indians, most born in the same USA you and I were born in, AFTER we were, should be entitled to any special privileges or considerations. Why in the world should they be entitled to any government programs that you and aren't entitled to? If they want to build a casino they can form a corporation and make their case to the people and to regulatory agencies just like any one else can, and take their chances on getting turned down just like everyone else does. The special treatment that has already been given them has encouraged in many of them the attitude that their progress in society is dependent on how much our government gives them instead of what they can do for themselves to compete successfully. The expectations caused by your condescending, paternalistic, plantation mentality is exactly what has held them back from the level of success that many other minority groups in America have achieved through their own hard work and sacrifice and determination. Italians, Irish, Japanese, and North Vietnamese are all groups who were reviled and abused here in the last century, but have succeeded through their own hard work despite bigots and others with a real hatred towards them. I'm confident that, given the chance, Native Americans can reach that same level of success these groups have. It's WAY past time we started treating them like every other American citizen, no better and no worse. ALL of us should be judged by the content of our character, NOT by the color of our skin, or do you think there should be certain exceptions to that philosophy?

Jeffery, it is useless to argue the point here, but I have some experience with living on a "reservation" and I must tell you it made me extremely grateful that I was born white, from European ancestry, and into a wealthy family. Sure it's true that they can "move" off the reservation just as it's true that people without work or hope can move out of Washington County. but when people are as poor as those on the Pine Ridge, or Rosebud all they have is family. difficult to leave in that situation.

Just for those who do not understand what the Indian settlement was about. The state gave certain tracts of land to the Indians under treatys. They then leased those lands out to the paper companys and were supposed to pay the proceeds to the Indians. They didn't, instead putting the proceeds into the general fund for many years. They sued... they won... we owed them that money and land just like any other business deal gone bad.
