Sen. Collins announces Fort Hood hearings

WASHINGTON — The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold hearings beginning Thursday as part of an investigation into whether what some have called a “homegrown terrorist attack” at Fort Hood Army Base in Texas this month could have been prevented.

Thirteen are dead and dozens were injured when Maj. Nadal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, allegedly opened fire on Nov. 5.

Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., held a press conference Wednesday to preview the hearings. Lieberman, the committee’s chairman, and Collins, its top Republican, focused on whether the guidelines for sharing information among government agencies should be changed to prevent future attacks.

Lieberman said after the investigation is finished, the committee will provide a report and recommendations based on its findings.

Collins said that congressional investigation after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon revealed that if information had been coordinated among agencies, the country could have been more prepared for the attack or even prevented it.

“Vital information was scattered throughout the government, confined by agency silos, that might have prevented the death and destruction of that terrible day, if only the dots had been connected,” she said. “Once again, in the wake of mass murder, we must confront a troubling question. Was this, once again, a failure to con-nect the dots?”

“It’s a fair question to ask what those [agencies] know,” she said.

Thursday’s hearing will “examine the threat of homegrown Islamic extremism and its history of targeting the military,” Lieberman said. Witnesses will include former Army and Department of Homeland Security personnel, as well as representatives of the New York City Police Department and two think tanks, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and RAND.

Since 2006, the committee has held 11 hearings on “violent Islamist extremism” and “homegrown terrorist threats.”

Lieberman said that the shooting at Fort Hood “was a terrorist attack, the most destructive terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.”

Lieberman said he supports the separate criminal investigations of Hasan and the Fort Hood shooting that are also being conducted. “I look forward to their outcome and have no intention of interfering with them in any way, shape or form. But that does not mean that the rest of us, including the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, should just sit back and watch,” Lieberman said.

“We are not interested in political theater. We are interested in getting the facts and correcting the system so that our government can provide the best homeland security possible for the American people,” he said.”

The failure to connect the dots is called "political correctness". Calling an "ace" an "ace"...which many don't want to do in this country anymore for fear be called a racist, bigot, or ignorant or a lawsuit. I hope we have learned our lesson.

No it's not all poltical correctness but it sure is a huge factor in it. Their are some who change the words of something to make it more acceptable to swallow by society in order to promote their cause. The guy was a terrorist...the signs were there. No one yelled loud enough to call attention to this terrorist. Why Obama chooses to say ...now let us not jump to conclusions...but yet was so quick to jump to conclusions in his defence of a black professor and calling the cop cop stupid says it all for me. Obama has bit off more than he can chew.

perfect way to reiterate homegrown terrorism laws and take away more freedoms... "either you're with us, or you're with the terrorists." google "the homegrown terrorism prevention act"...

"Many people I interviewed were very concerned about this. The second definition, which is “homegrown terrorism”, talks about the planned use, threatened use, of force or violence by a group to intimidate or coerce the government of the United States. When you think about these definitions, what does that mean? When you look at the activism going on today, is there planned use of force or coercion going on? When you look at what is going on in Olympia, with individuals sitting down and blocking war shipments. When you look at Code Pink going into Congress and disrupting activities. Could this be included in this definition?"

"either you're with us, or you're with the terrorists."

too much money for war, and none for peace, let alone the good peoples' basic needs.

It's going to be a tough investigation. The sad truth is that the military and all gov't agencies( including the FBI,CIA and the White House) now have radical musims planted in high positions and These muslims have connections to such groups as CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood. CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood's real goal is to Islamize America and they fund terrorist groups like Hamas and Al Quaida .AND CHERSULLY, American "Political Correctness"is their BEST FRIEND, for without it they would be all but powerless.

this country has open borders and they are doing it through poltical correctness...We're about to implode from the inside. Everyone I speak to feels we are on the edge of a cliff. The chessman are all in place. The perfect storm.

The President ask to hold off on those hearings. Collins apparently didnt hear him. Work together people. Its going some when the people reading these articles have more information than the ones running it.

Obama quickly jumps to action when it involves spending large amounts of money for bailouts and health plans and whatever else promotes his agenda but when it comes to protecting our military and this country it seems an issue that sits on the back burner.

Collins walked out of a meeting where being discussed was the Hood shootings. Apparently she was really upset. Hold off on those hearings... why? Wait for another terrorist attack within this country before they think this issue worthy of attention?

If a white redneck who was in the military was out speaking against Obama and talking to others about how the KKK was a good organization and are correct in their philosophy and that going after blacks was right and just, don't you think he would have been pounced on immediately? You bet some of this neglect was due to PC and if that isn't obvious....all one had to do was listen to the pres and the liberal media after the incident...even AFTER facts were being brought forward. Don't rush to judgement, this isn't an act of terrorism, don't blame muslims ( no one was blaming muslims), he may have ptsd, he is mental, he was torn, the war made him do it...the only thing we didn't hear was the Cambridge Police Dept was stupid.

In 5 years Sen Collins as head of the Homeland Security Committee failed to hold a single hearing on the many deaths of military personnel in Iraq killed by KBR. This hearing is Pure politics.

rogereastMill: The President asked to hold off, so that he could allow the military to deliver a soft result. Collins just gave him the 'what's what' as in separation of power.

firefly: I sit in your corner on this one. political correctness in the military is "don't look, don't see, and keep it quiet...especially when peer officers and professionals are involved." Heck, try to get one Doctor or lawyer to out a colleague in civilian life...NOT!

LilMikey you nailed it. He got a free pass and at Walter Reed Hosp. training.

Ex military 66-70 and also worked for a Muslim company and lived over there. I knew what a black man felt like in the earl 50's in the deep south; just from the 'look' I got.

quoting from story: "Since 2006, the committee has held 11 hearings on “violent Islamist extremism” and “homegrown terrorist threats.”

The many deaths of military personnel in Iraq killed by KBR is in the Defense Department and the Pentagon's venue. Collins is in the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

In upper New York there is a radical Muslim compound. No one allowed in. Signs posted everywhere. Crazy....Do a search. Another blind eye...

Things must be very slow with nothing to do for Collins. There are already 20 investigations going on. Now Suzy with nothing better to do, has to put that nose into Fort Hood. Hey Suzy maybe you can work for a good health care bill, so that all Mainers could have health care. Instead of you saying NO to everything, you wouldn't have so much free time on your hands.

So the wingers think the politicians should investigate before the cops and military finish? Funny how when they see an ox to gore they insist the politicians get all over it, but if it involves getting something to the common man, then it is survival of the fittest.

The Bush military was driven to "stop loss", remember people? You didn't let anybody out for any reason. This is what happens when you stretch the military and don't pay attention to the individuals. These needless tragedies happen when you keep nut jobs in.

Another case, not the same, but it shows how the military really looks after its own. There is a woman (somebody Hutchinson from Cal.) in jail because her child care fell through at the last minute and she missed the plane to Afghanistan. Rather than helping her care for her child, rather than discharging her, rather than helping her, they arrested her, put her kid in foster care where the 5 yr old was abused and refuse to try to help the family re-unite. The boys and girls on the ground are heros, but the brass is definitely a bunch of zeros on a bunch of levels.

Obama had nothing to do with the murders at Ft. Hood. The nut case was in long during the previous admin. when he should have been court martialed, drummed out or shot. Those who see Obama's hand in any of this are pretty stupid. Same for those who forget that the banks were bailed out in Aug-Sept. of 2008, before the election. The car execs govt their payoff before Obama was inaugurated. So either your memory is bad or you are drinking the cool-aid from Rush there, firefly. Also, you write about a fenced off area in NY. Have you been there? Is it a crime to fence off an area and post it? What about private property laws? I think your deck is missing a few cards, maybe a whole suit.

There were no failures to connect the dots, as the report went on to state. The failures were in the US Army failing to update Hasan's 201 Personnel File with the real truthful entries as to his behavior and reflect the nature of this man, instead the file represented a clean, honest, forthright soldier, who had been promoted twice with ambivalent entries, from 1st Lieutenant to the rank of Major. The Security on Fort Hood failed miserably as a result of having not incorporated emergency response teams, then acted slow in that response when this issue occurred. Then, in levels of the Command at Fort Hood, the US Army failed to act to remove Hasan - when they KNEW of his feelings toward the military and the Pakistani war...to INCLUDE - that he sent over thirty thousand dollars to Pakistan recently. Then, The Pentagon itself failed miserably in the fact their investigation proved Hasan was riding the edge and did not take and initiate fast-enough action. Then, the Commanding General on Fort Hood, informed or not, but knew of Hasan's predicament prior to the "shooting", did not undertake immediate measures to have Hasan put under tight security. Failures all...no dot-connecting; the dots were all connected; just failure on the US Government's part, once again!

The media itself has more damned information on this issue right now than what the government has, believe this is true! The Senator from Michigan mentioned this on a special broadcast today. Collins is coming in as a Johnny-Come-Lately, just for political correctness...we see this clearly. Too late to gather information now and waste more tax dollars doing this, Senator Collins. The damage is done, already!

The investigations were already done, for goodness sakes...the problem was the US government failed to take action, people! 'LilMickey" said it right (((10:56am))). 'JonAlbrecht' said it right (((10:59am))). More comments here are great and spot-on!

Senator, I can save you the trouble of an investigation.

Major Hasan is a Muslim; he belongs to a protected class.

Due to political correctness he was able to murder and wound many of America's finest, while their Army superiors dithered and ducked, knowing they had a jihadist in their ranks.

I think that should read, "dithered and slithered".

Officers can do no wrong If it were an enlisted man he would have been hung by now. All kinds of american soldies would have love to have his job with the free schooling but no they instead gave it to another rag head

Coillins and Lieberman, now there's a pretty pair of opportunists! Surely U.S. senators have better things to do these days than conduct a half-a$$ed grandstanding "investigation" into what is clearly a criminal matter involving an individual having a psychotic breakdown. I'm reminded of Richard Nixon commenting publicly before the trial on the guilt of Charles Manson. Perhaps our junior senator and the senator representing the Zionist state of Israel would also like to probe why Ophrah Winfrey is retiring or, on a more serious note, look into how much campaign financing either of them might be able to raise from Wall Street and the insurance mafia by continuing to sabotage health care for all Americans.

How many investigations do they need?????

Peter hit the nail on the head..(did I say that?)
