EDDINGTON, Maine — Two motorists were taken to a Bangor hospital Wednesday evening for injuries they suffered in a head-on collision on Riverside Drive, about a mile off Route 9.

Injured were Debra Donelan, 53, of Levant, and Timothy Libby, 23, of Old Town, Deputy Daren Mason of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday night. Mason said both victims were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Both were being evaluated in the hospital’s emergency department as of 9 p.m., an EMMC nursing supervisor said.

According to Mason, the accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when Donelan, who was driving south in her 1996 Toyota Corolla, crossed the centerline and traveled into the path of Libby’s northbound 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

“They pretty much hit driver-to-driver,” Mason said, adding that the driver’s sides of both vehicles then slid alongside each other until both cars came to a stop, causing significant damage to each.

The two motorists were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and the air bags in both vehicles deployed, preventing what Mason said could have been more serious injuries.

Mason said the two motorists suffered nearly identical injuries to their left sides, including leg and arm injuries and cuts to their heads. He said the injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Because of the damage to the driver’s sides of their cars, neither Donelan nor Libby was able to exit the usual way.

Mason said that Libby was able to get himself out of his car by climbing through the sun roof. Donelan, however, was pinned inside her Corolla and needed to be removed from it by Brewer and Eddington firefighters using hydraulic extrication equipment.

Though the accident remained under investigation Wednesday night, Mason said that Donelan indicated that she drifted into the oncoming traveling lane because she was “not paying attention.” Mason said a witness to the crash indicated that speed was not a factor in the accident.

So what was she paying attention to then? Did she just have a massive brain fart and forget she was driving an automobile?

Cell Phone?

Shame on you Kevin_of_bangor

Shame on you JudyBouchard

Shame on BOTH of you!

Can't a girl have her half of the road down the middle without some pesky driver coming the other way to get in HER way?

What the matter with you people?? I think Libby had some nerve being there.

Now look at all of the damage he caused.

You know, Kevin_of_Bangor, before you go posting ingorant and rude things about people you don't know, maybe for once you should think. She is my mother and that is not what was said to the Sheriff's Deputy. And quite frankly, it's none of your business what she did say of give you any right to comment. I almost lost my mother the other night and for the life of me, I still can't figure out why it is that you or on here every day making comments about other people. Do you not have a job or a life? You seem to be quite vocal about everyone else and their doings..maybe it's your own that you should be analyzing.

She was not paying attention? What the frig was she doing, texting?????

Another example of how STUPID the Maine distracted driver law is. Isn't almost EVERY accident caused by someone not being attentive? Not including of course, animal accidents.

Mainepkrplyr I have a job and I do not comment on every story nor do I comment every day. I only asked a question because the story states she was not paying attention. You can always inform us to why or how the accident occurred since you know all the facts. So what caused your mother to cross the center line and hit another vehicle head on?

According to you the article is wrong and your mother was paying attention, so lets have the facts.
