Panel probes Fort Hood attack

Collins wants to investigate what led to shootings on Army base

WASHINGTON — The Senate hearing Thursday on the Fort Hood shooting began with questions about how federal agencies can cooperate to identify and prevent extremist behavior and unraveled to speculation on whether the First Amendment should apply fully to members of the military.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee began its probe by discussing whether Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged shooter, should have been questioned or monitored and whether federal procedures should change to catch potential threats before they escalate.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Congress must work to understand the shortcomings that led to the shooting.

“To prevent future homegrown terrorist attacks, we must better understand why our law enforcement and intelligence agencies and our military personnel system may have failed in this case,” Collins, the top Republican on the committee, said. “These patriotic soldiers and civilians of all faiths that were injured and killed — not on a foreign battleground, but rather on what should have been safe and secure American territory —deserve a thorough investigation.”

Though committee chairman Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, said Wednesday in a press conference that the committee was “not interested in political theater” with the hearings, Thursday’s hearing provided plenty of drama, and may not yield results anytime soon.

Lieberman said that the committee would have another public hearing about so-called homegrown terror plots and the Fort Hood attack “when and if we think it’s appropriate and constructive to do so,” and until then would continue investigations behind closed doors.

The hearing, which focused on information available on the public record about Hasan, his research and military career, featured testimony from retired Army Gen. John Keane as well as Fran Townsend, a former assistant to President George W. Bush for homeland security and counterterrorism.

Representatives from RAND, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the intelligence division of the New York Police Department also testified.

No current federal employees were witnesses, one indicator that the congressional investigation is being tolerated — not supported or encouraged — by President Barack Obama, who reportedly asked Lieberman to wait for the criminal investigation of the incident to be over before delving into it himself.

Witnesses talked about “lone wolf” acts of terrorism, where it is unclear whether the attacker is acting alone or as part of an organization, as well as how political correctness could have saved Hasan, a practicing Muslim, from inquiry about his behavior or beliefs.

“Were numerous warning signs ignored because the Army faces a shortage of psychiatrists and was concerned, as the Army chief of staff has subsequently put it, about a ‘backlash against Muslim soldiers’?” Collins said in her opening statement. “These are all questions we will seek to answer.”

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said that the military should monitor soldiers more closely.

“Perhaps we should err on the side of caution rather than the side of [political] correctness,” he said.

Keane, a former Army vice chief of staff, said that it should be the responsibility of other soldiers to alert their superiors of extremist views in their units. Right now, he said, it is not a requirement, and many soldiers will pull away from someone with radical views, allowing extremists to exist in the ranks and polarize units.

“We will find that our policies will need revision again to reflect the specific behavior of jihad extremists,” Keane said. “It should not be an act of moral courage for a soldier to identify another soldier who has exhibited extremist behavior. It should be an obligation.”

When the investigation is concluded, Lieberman said, the committee will make recommendations for the federal government.

“I’m very much for a diverse Army, and I think that the diversity in our Army is its strength,” Collins said after the hearing. “What I also believe is that if a member of the military exhibits extremist behavior it has to be confronted for the safety of all those that individual is serving with.”

Hours after the hearing ended Thursday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced that former Army Secretary Togo West and former Chief of Naval Operations Vernon Clark would lead the Pentagon review of the shootings.

Its seems pretty clear this is an act of terrorism if his name was Jones this wouldnt be an issue. Perhaps the government should increase profiling. Havent we learned yet????

We have two sons stationed at Fort Hood. I doubt very seriously that any panel will admit that Political Correctness help allow this to happen. Hasan was afforded special privileges when his poor performance and odd behavior was overlooked just because of his religion and ethnic background. No race, gender, or religion should receive kid gloves and social promotion. It is discouraging that Hasan was transferred into our families home.

As soon as Hasan is able, Obama is going to invite him and the victims families over for a few beers. I'm supprised he has not said the white female cop that shot him "acted stupidly".

Don't need all these self made amateur investigators putting their two cents in this. Politicians are politicians PERIOD! There is no doubt that "political correctness" played a major role in allowing this mis-fit to remain in the army AND attaining the rank of Major. On his way to senior command staff. Enlisted men raised red flags and were ignored. This jihadist was flaunting it. The same left wing liberals that promote all the things that allowed this are now "investigating" it. And Collins is one of them. “I’m very much for a diverse Army, and I think that the diversity in our Army is its strength,” No, Collins. The Army had it's strength long BEFORE the buzzword DIVERSITY ever came about. “What I also believe is that if a member of the military exhibits extremist behavior it has to be confronted for the safety of all those that individual is serving with.” EXTREMIST? EXTREMEIST? Where's the line before it becomes extremist behavior. No, you don't let it go that far. Who would dare call his behavior extremeist? In this day and age the liberal media would crucify anyone who caused his dismissal from the military prior to his jihadist action. What did he yelll before he started shooting? The same thing they all yell on suicide missions!! Time to restore common sense and crush the dominant left wing liberal agenda!!!

These Senatorial clowns don't give a pot of beans about the Constitution. 90% of what they do violates the Constitution. These arm chair warriors really have the nerve to even mention the Bill of Rights.

I has always been understood that, when you enter the military, you agree to give up some of your rights on behalf of your country. Even though it is governed by its own set of laws, the military is not a Republic by the people, for the people, and of the people. It is a quasi dictatorship that operates in the interest of national security. National security is something that people, while committing crimes against the country, like to quote when they want to withhold information or violate our rights and our Constitution. In this particular case, while we are at war with Muslim countries, it is in the interest of national security to scrutinize Muslims within our ranks more closely just because they are Muslims. Everyone can let their hearts bleed later instead of letting our soldiers' hearts bleed now.

Funny how libs wanted investigations into everything when Bush was in but not now.

My earlier post pales when it comes to the email I just received with retired Lt. Col. West's remarks. I would be remiss if I didn't post it as he says it better and with personal knowledge !!!

Allen West on Fort Hood Massacre

November 7, 2009

The following is a statement released by Retired Lt. Col. Allen West:

This past Thursday 13 American Soldiers were killed and another 30 wounded at a horrific mass shooting at US Army installation, Ft Hood Texas. As I watched in horror and then anger I recalled my two years of final service in the Army as a Battalion Commander at Ft Hood, 2002-2004.

My wife and two daughters were stunned at the incident having lived on the post in family housing.

A military installation, whether it is Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, or Coast Guard, is supposed to be a safe sanctuary for our Warriors and their families. It is intended to provide a home whereby our “Band of Brothers and Sisters” can find solace and bond beyond just the foxhole but as family units.

A military installation is supposed to be a place where our Warriors train for war, to serve and protect our Nation.

On Thursday, 5 November 2009 Ft Hood became a part of the battlefield in the war against Islamic totalitarianism and state sponsored terrorism.

There may be those who feel threatened by my words and would even recommend they not be uttered. To those individuals I say step aside because now is not the time for cowardice. Our Country has become so paralyzed by political correctness that we have allowed a vile and determined enemy to breach what should be the safest place in America, an Army post.

We have become so politically correct that our media is more concerned about the stress of the shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan. The misplaced benevolence intending to portray him as a victim is despicable. The fact that there are some who have now created an entire new classification called; “pre-virtual vicarious Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)” is unconscionable.

This is not a “man caused disaster”. It is what it is, an Islamic jihadist attack.

We have seen this before in 2003 when a SGT Hasan of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) threw hand grenades and opened fire into his Commanding Officer’s tent in Kuwait. We have seen the foiled attempt of Albanian Muslims who sought to attack Ft Dix, NJ. Recently we saw a young convert to Islam named Carlos Bledsoe travel to Yemen, receive terrorist training, and return to gun down two US Soldiers at a Little Rock, Arkansas Army recruiting station. We thwarted another Islamic terrorist plot in North Carolina which had US Marine Corps Base, Quantico as a target.

What have we done with all these prevalent trends? Nothing.

What we see are recalcitrant leaders who are refusing to confront the issue, Islamic terrorist infiltration into America, and possibly further into our Armed Services. Instead we have a multiculturalism and diversity syndrome on steroids.

Major Hasan should have never been transferred to Ft Hood, matter of fact he should have been Chaptered from the Army. His previous statements, poor evaluation reports, and the fact that the FBI had him under investigation for jihadist website posting should have been proof positive.

However, what we have is a typical liberal approach to find a victim, not the 13 and 30 Soldiers and Civilian, but rather the poor shooter. A shooter who we are told was a great American, who loved the Army and serving his Nation and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) stating that his actions had nothing to do with religious belief.

We know that Major Hasan deliberately planned this episode; he did give away his possessions. He stood atop a table in the confined space of the Soldier Readiness Center shouting “Allahu Akhbar”, same chant as the 9-11 terrorists and those we fight against overseas in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation.

No one in leadership seems willing to sound the alarm for the American people; they are therefore complicit in any future attacks. Our Congress should suspend the insidious action to vote on a preposterous and unconstitutional healthcare bill and resolve the issue of “protecting the American people”.

The recent incidents in Dearborn Michigan, Boston Massachusetts, Dallas Texas, and Chicago Illinois should bear witness to the fact that we have an Islamic terrorism issue in America. And don’t have CAIR call me and try to issue a vanilla press statement; they are an illegitimate terrorist associated organization which should be disbanded.

We have Saudi Arabia funding close to 80% of the mosques in the United States, one right here in South Florida, Pompano Beach. Are we building churches and synagogues in Saudi Arabia? Are “Kaffirs” and “Infidels” allowed travel to Mecca?

So much for peaceful coexistence.

Saudi Arabia is sponsoring radical Imams who enter into our prisons and convert young men into a virulent Wahabbist ideology….one resulting in four individuals wanting to destroy synagogues in New York with plastic explosives.. Thank God the explosives were dummy. They are sponsoring textbooks which present Islamic centric revisionist history in our schools.

We must recognize that there is an urgent need to separate the theo-political radical Islamic ideology out of our American society. We must begin to demand surveillance of suspected Imams and mosques that are spreading hate and preaching the overthrow of our Constitutional Republic……that speech is not protected under First Amendment, it is sedition, and if done by an American....treason.

There should not be some 30 Islamic terrorist training camps in America that has nothing to do with First Amendment, Freedom of Religion. The Saudis are not our friends and any American political figure who believes such is delusional.

When tolerance becomes a one way street it certainly leads to cultural suicide. We are on that street. Liberals cannot be trusted to defend our Republic, because their sympathies obviously lie with their perceived victim, Major Nidal Malik Hasan.

I make no apologies for these words, and anyone angered by them, please, go to Ft Hood and look into the eyes of the real victims. The tragedy at Ft Hood Texas did not have to happen. Consider now the feelings of those there and on every military installation in the world. Consider the feelings of the Warriors deployed into combat zones who now are concerned that their loved ones at home are in a combat zone.

Ft Hood suffered an Islamic jihadist attack, stop the denial, and realize a simple point.

The reality of your enemy must become your own.

Steadfast and Loyal,

Lieutenant Colonel Allen B West (US Army, Ret)

Hey Silly Susan, dispute this man's view !!! He's also right about the march on Pelosi-Reid-Bama health care.I dare you and BDN to call him on this. To that I would also add so-called "cap and trade" which contains provisions to get a "license" to sell your house. But first, it must be inspected to conform to $$$$$ and $$$$$ of energy saving upgrades. Thermal windows, doors. Got A/C? Thermal reflective roofing !!! And it goes on and on. Sections 202, 204 and 304. Think Big Al is making money now? Wait'll you see what he rakes in with these gems that are slipped in !!! Oh, Yeah. another Czar directly appointed by Nobama. Only he be called "Administrator" !! Nobody to answer to and he can change the rules as he goes at the direction of Nbama !!!

P.S. Thought you should know. Col. Wells is "a man of color" as y'all are prone to say now. So be VERY CAREFUL!!!!!!!

Spaulumini....thanks for the post...clean out the bench warmers in the White House. Don't forget the next election. Vote them out. Looking forward to it.

Noticed how the color grey is disappearing? People and their policies have become very clear....black or white. For the American people or selling us out.

Yet again the government has let us down....

It is just getting a little tiresome to hear the right did this the left did that the conservatives did this the liberals did that the extremist on both sides did this and that.

Political Correctness I have always thought was just sit on the fence and not do or say anything about what is going ON.

And I have never ever been ACCUSED of THAT.

What is wrong with this Country and Why in my humble opinions All this BS happens is because OF<<

The Polarization of this Country and ALL the Effects of THAT POLARIZATION<<

What Do You Think Of That ALL You Armchair PRESIDENTS<<

NO Chit, there are infiltrators in our Mist.

There are also American Subversives in our Mist

And It looks a lot like they are American Citizens from the Right and The Left of Both Parties.<

Panel probe? Hopefully some heads roll. Who knew and didn't act? Who should have known and did not? SOS. If there is a war on terror there should be a plan to win it. Who is in charge of that battle and what is the battle plan? Time to investigate the enemy and here at home that would be the the Hasans' wherever they are hiding in wait to carry out some suicidal act of ignorance. 43 dead and wounded at the hands of a section 8 shrink. Everyone has a boss so start by handcuffing Hasan's. The enemy was identified long ago, we know what they look like, act like and are capable of, and we pretty much know where not to look. This nut did not slip through the cracks, he was already identified and more than one failed to protect us from him. Bad guys 43, good guys 0.

Coverup. It was a mutiny. Multiple shooters. The government wants to hang it on a lone muslim so they don't have to admit to a moral problem.

bam....maybe their expecting a terrorist to look like a cross dresser in heals....so they don't know where to look and what they look like.

I spent years living on military bases all over the world with my family when I was growing up. They were the safe havens in a sometimes hostile environment. Dad could go to work and know we were safe behind walls and a guarded gate. What happened at Fort Hood should never have happened. Superiors will have to answer for much I am sure, but everyone who knew something and didn't act has a responsibility in what happened. I always thought that history proves defense is the first and best measure to take and this country is ignoring that. There are some checks in play, but they have been in play long enough now for someone who wants to to figure out a way around them. Lt. Col. Allen West, I concur 100 percent! At this point we need to fix it! The important thing right now is not to try to put blame somewhere, that is not going to change the current situation, we can deal with that at our leisure. The important thing is we know it happened and why so fix it! Thank you SPALUMNI for posting Lt. Col. Allen West's letter. Well written and definitely on the mark.

Unfortunately, what happened at Ft Hood may be just the beginning of terrorist attacks in the US. Radcal Muslims have been embedding themselves in the US since the late 40's. The War on Terror is about to be fought right here . I for one do NOT feel safe with Obama at the helm. He is at least an appeaser and perhaps at most a mulsim himself or a sympathizer. I really have begun to wonder if Obama even cares about America, Americans or the US Military .

Spalumni...excellent post!
