Limestone receives $4.2 million in federal funds

LIMESTONE, Maine — The town will use more than $4.2 million in stimulus funds to make wastewater system improvements in the municipality.

The funding, being distributed through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, includes a $1.1 million loan and a $3.1 million grant to assist Limestone with the project. The money will allow the town to invest in its water and wastewater infrastructure. It also will help it continue to deliver safe drinking water and help protect the environment in rural areas.

The news was announced Wednesday by members of the state’s congressional delegation.

U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins worked with a bipartisan group of senators to craft the legislation, which eventually secured the funding for the town.

“These funds will help the town of Limestone take the necessary steps to update and improve its water and waste disposal services,” the senators said in a joint statement. “Rural communities across Maine are struggling to replace aging water systems and we are pleased that the USDA has stepped in to help Limestone enhance the efficiency and quality of these vital public services.”

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud also applauded the announcement, pointing out the project in Limestone is one of 31 water and environmental projects announced Wednesday that is being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Cities and towns throughout Maine have benefited greatly by USDA water system investments,” said Michaud. “Many communities in Maine have aging water infrastructure and are facing major investments to upgrade their systems in order to protect public health and to maintain environmental standards. The resources made available today are essential to Limestone’s water system and will benefit area residents by creating jobs.”

The ARRA funding designated for Limestone is being administered by USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program.

One would think that an Editor might notice that there was a $40,000,000 discrepancy between the amount awarded and the amount in the headline. Or am I missing something?

Just like Loring coming back-

Remember when a newspaper's editors would edit the stories instead of writing opinion articles?

This type of error makes one remember the stupid error rather than the story itself. Dumb.

Are we sure it's an error, or could somebody be hiding something???????????????????????????

Why does the media refuse to call it what it is? It's not Federal Funds. It's not stimulus funds. IT'S TAXPAYERS MONEY. If the media would use the true source in every instance maybe, just maybe, some people would wake up and see that it's their money that the wonderful elected officials are giving out in the millions, no make that billions. When you file your tax return each year don't look at how much of your money you might get back, if any. Look at how much they keep and how it might have made a difference in your ability to buy something or have some spare money for emergency, savings, retirement, etc. Then, maybe, they would take a second look before they vote. What's the incumbant been doing? Have they been doing what they said they would do when they campaigned for office? Don't be fooled by the recency facor. Go back over their whole term and see if it washes. Is the BDN going to track how this 4.2 mil is spent and report on how many jobs are created? Do they track other taxpayer handouts and see how they are spent?

Obviously, jj16oz, you have no idea how federal stolenfromus funds work. The $40-million is what Olympia and Silly Susan skimmed off for their numbered Panamanian bank accounts.

Addressing deferred maintenance is good but shouldn't we be trying to build an economic engine for the future?

Good for Limestone!! After the USAF pulled out they could use some help. Sad to see that town today compared to what it looked like in the '60's.

3.1 million and 1.1 million add up to 4.2 million when I went to school?

However, I'd think quite a few parents dishing out big bucks for their kids to go to school there would be wondering after reading this article...

"It also will help it continue to deliver safe drinking water "

Uh so if they hadn't got the stimulus/taxpayer money their kids would soon be drinking unsafe water?
