Fleeing driver dies in crash on Maine Turnpike

By The Associated Press

LEWISTON, Maine — State police say a high-speed chase on the Maine Turnpike ended when the car they were chasing crashed and burst into flames, killing the driver.

The driver, who police say is believed to be from Maine, was taken to a nearby funeral home for identification.

According to police, a trooper began chasing a 2004 Acura with Massachusetts license plates at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after getting reports of an erratic driver on the turnpike. They say the car was speeding over 100 mph, and crashed at a construction site in Lewiston near the Lisbon Road overpass.

There were no other reported injuries.

What an IDIOT. Yep-I judged them. Fool. Glad they did not harm anyone else.

Wonder how many Times that person had been in Jail

or Why running from the Law

Yes I am Very Thankful that none of mine or yours were hurt.

Crazy ma$$holes!!!! One less bozo on the roads, thankfully he only took his own life.

massachusetts license plates.......priceless

Last time I rented a car I got one with Mass plates. I noticed a lot of the other cars in the lot had out of state plates on them as well. I was born, raised, and live in Maine. But for that week, I was a Ma$$hole! Not to mention I was stuck with a PT Cruiser-that's all the $#%$# at Avis would let me have unless I paid a ton of $$$ for a Camero or a truck.

I'm sure an 04 Acura is NOT a rental-but the article does say they think the driver was from ME.

Probably read it on his bloodied, burnt license.

Kevin I was just being a smart butt (since the filter wont let me use the other word there!) It really is too bad this individual lost his or her life, this person made a poor decision and ended up paying the ultimate price.

you cant say arse(a$$) on here?thats censorship to the fullest if its true

yup its true

No worries Gixxer-I just got teased by all my friends and family that week. And sometimes I chuckle when someone is complaining about an "out of state driver"-I think geez, it could be some poor mainer stuck in a rental.

What does it tell us that rent-a-car companies do not register the vehicles in Maine? Everything's too expensive in this dump.

coastalresident they had there chance but blew last election. I still say starve the beast. Don't spend but save and save go spend in NH

Starve the beast!!!!!!

Why is it that most rental cars have Mass plates? I noticed that too.

My thinking is that if the rental businesses operates in every state, then they should have to equally license and register each vehicle in the states in which they operate. (ie: 100 cars means that there would be 2 vehicles licensed in Maine, 2 in NH, 2 in MA, 2 in CT, 2 in VT, etc....)

If anyone knows the reason for having most vehicles Registered in Mass, please explain! It seems to me that we're losing a lot of revenue in this state when it comes to rental cars.

And focusing my attention back to the article... My condolences to the family of this man.

If I owned a rental car why register it in Me. Way too expensive..

Cost would just be passed on to the renter..

Please. I am so tired of you people and your negative comments about Massachusetts drivers. The bottom line is that someone lost his/her life driving out of control on the Maine Turnpike. Does it really matter where the person was from? I grew up in northern Maine, learned to drive in Maine, and went to school in Massachusetts where I now live and work. My husband and I travel to Maine frequently and spend a lot of time on the roads. We have nearly been driven off of our own camp road intentionally because our vehicles have Massachusetts plates. I am embarrassed that the people of my home state treat people this way just because they're from a different state. Every state has its share of terrible drivers. There are certainly a lot of terrible, impatient drivers in Massachusetts, but there are a lot of great drivers too. Some of the worst drivers that I have seen are in southern Maine, tailgating and talking on their cell phones while trying to navigate enormous luxury SUVs with Maine license plates. The state of Maine depends on visitors from its neighboring states, so please have a little bit of respect the next time you see us on the roads. The person in that car next to you with Massachusetts plates could be that kid who grew up across the street from you and now lives in Massachusetts; someone who grew up in Maine driving back to see her family for the holidays, or perhaps its a friend of yours driving a rental car. It also could be someone from Massachusetts driving to Freeport to spend a boatload of cash at the outlet stores. Who cares? Please just pay attention, keep your eyes on the road, and try to be a little less judgmental.

Should'a zigged when he zagged.

Yeah, and in Massachusetts, we are Maniacs. Who cares.

A lot of rental cars have out of state plates, because most agencies let you rent at one place and turn the vehicle in at your destination. For some of the larger rental car companies, they purchase their fleets largely, if not entirely, in one state. Sometimes they end up being registered at the point of purchase, or maybe where they can get the best insurance deals. Maine's auto insurance is a lot lower than Massachusetts, but the excise tax is waaaayyy higher. I have a ten year old car that just cost me $120 for excise tax. In Mass, just before I moved here, my ten year old car only cost $20 in excise tax. I am pretty sure I could not afford to have a brand new car even if someone gave to me for free!

And they call Massachusetts---Taxachusetts!! They have no idea. . . .

My condolences to that drivers family. That's a high price to pay.

Iam from PA and worked in jersey i thought ive seen it all driving down there, until i came here. People there drive fast and agressive. People here drive slow and reckless. People here in Maine think they are better than anyone that is not from this hick state. Some of the most ignorant moronic people i have ever met in my life were raised in maine and still live in maine. I now live and work in this state and have grown to like it, although i do not like the people here, the views and outdoor activities are awesome. You mainers need to be a little more open minded
