BREWER, Maine — People will not simply park their cars and stroll with their families into Second Congregational Church on South Main Street on Sunday afternoon.

They will park a few blocks away, making sure that no one is following them. They will stand alone in the parking lot until someone slowly opens a door at the back of the building and signals that the coast is clear and it is safe to enter.

Once inside the 104-year-old structure, they will be in not just a darkened church basement, but in the home of a Christian in Eritrea, in northeast Africa. There will be no Bibles and no hymnals. There will be only flashlights shared by worshippers. A lookout will remain on guard in case the police come to break up the service and, possibly, arrest worshippers.

The Brewer church will hold the unusual 4 p.m. service to observe the Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, marked officially on Nov. 8. Second Congregational is marking the day a little late because of a scheduling conflict.

“We have the idea here in the United States that church is something you can go to at will, that it will always be there,” said the Rev. Richard Hyman, pastor of the church. “People [in other countries] literally risk their lives to worship. We want to give people an awareness of that situation.”

The congregation chose to hold a worship service in a way similar to those held in nations where Christians are persecuted. Two years ago, worshippers pretended to be in Iran. This year, they will be in Eritrea.

The country of 4.9 million is located on the Red Sea in northeastern Africa. Once a part of Ethiopia, Eritrea in 2002 outlawed all religious groups other than Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Lutheran Christians and followers of Islam. Since then, according to Open Doors, an international nonprofit ministry that supports persecuted Christians in more than 45 countries worldwide, many Eritrean Christians in different denominations have been arrested and tortured.

In October 2008, a campaign of mass arrest brought the number held in police stations, military camps, metal shipping containers and jail to nearly 3,000, according to the organization based in California. None has been charged or given access to the judicial process.

Fifteen Eritrean Orthodox monks were arrested in July, the Dutch office of Open Doors reported, allegedly for their plans to publicize the government’s interference in the affairs of their church. Further information about their fate was not available Friday.

Eritrea is No. 9 in Open Doors’ list of 10 nations in which Christians are persecuted for practicing their faith.

Some worshippers at Sunday’s service in Brewer will be assigned roles to play, Hyman said. One may portray a man whose brother, also a Christian, has disappeared suddenly. Another may be a mother whose son has been pressed into military service.

“We have the names of people who are in these kinds of situations and we will pray for them,” the minister said, “but we will be doing something that is illegal in some parts of the world. We will be on our guard. We will try to experience a bit of what they do.”

The service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Second Congregational Church, 607 South Main St., Brewer. For information, call 989-7930.

Tragic, really, an example of how one religion, and religion sponsored by the state, persecutes another...

Christians in America are right to bring awareness of the issue. They are wrong, however, to pretend that they don't partake int he same type of thing, especially when they belong to churches that actively persecute other churches, by preventing them from marrying same-sex couples, for example, and using the state to do their dirty work for them. Just like the religious persecution that they protest. Irony is beautiful.

Whaaaaaaa

yep yep the irony

Not the mention the christian fanatics hanging outside planned parenthood clinics harrassing women entering, taking license plate numbers, and yes bombs in the night. Mirrors might be the proper tool for this article.

Why don't you open your doors to the homeless at night - Everytime you go to your warm bed - think about the homeless people freezing and dying outside - You hypocrits that wear a while collar -

pichris still trying to ride that bandwagon that homosexuals are being persecuted right along with Christians, blacks and women? Isn't working, the majority didn't fall for it. You were stopped in your tracks because of your immoral behavior, nothing else. The only irony is gays are making the spotlight while those that are truly being persecuted are being totally ignored by the mainstream media. Wrong is now being called right........the last days are fast approaching just like the bible predicts.

Oh man - I had really hoped that 4Him2Day was going to go away after the election. Do we really have to keep hearing from you? You're so nasty to people and your views are so narrow.

To most Americans their concept of freedom is their 'right' to do this or 'right' to have that blah, blah, ad nausea tum.

Freedom isn't something you have. Freedom is a laundry list of things you DON'T have. FREEDOM = FREE FROM.

Oppression, tyranny, absolutism, summary law....to name a few.

The Second Congregational Church is demonstrating precisely this concept and, obviously, few are getting it on this forum.

Over 2 million Christians have been killed or dismembered in the Sudan alone. Many other countries in Africa have set out on an Islamic jihad to rid their countries of Christians. And now, in America, there are anti-Christians all around that would like to take us out. Jesus said that His name would be reviled, and He was right. And the only reason so many hate Christ is that He is the One and Only True and Living God. There is no other way to get to Heaven, and all other roads lead to Hell.

EJP, get real. The alleged persectuions of Christians in the US is paranoia and can in no way compare to the persecution both you and the artilce cited. I'll bet that you are not a memebr of the three chosen churches not being persecuted in Eritrea. Maybe you should attend this service.

Depressingly interesting that three Christian Church bodies are singled out as OK. Could it be that they are doing mission work deemed valuable (and irreplacable) by the Eritrean government? This in stark contrast to the situation in Ethipia at the time of the overthrow of the king and the beginning of the Eritrean war of independence. Then, all Christians (and professionals) were persecuted and a stream of refugees to the West began.

PIchris, this is a Congregational Church, so my guess is they were actively involved in trying to stop Question One. This denomination is very aware and active in social issues overall.

forHIMtoday, who are kidding! If you go to many countries, especially those in the Middle East, homosexuals are executed and murdered. That is a fact, so stop trying to pretend otherwise.

What this church is attempting with this "exercise" is to raise awareness and empathy for all those persecuted in this world, regardless of church or other affilitation. People in many groups are persecuted. They are pointing out the immorarilty and inhumanity of that.

Shannon9A: That church would NOT have been involved in trying to repeal question 1. They probably did not advocate strongly either way (politically,etc.) but that would not be a church that would have been on the "Yes on 1" side. Your post is unclear. I guess maybe that is what you meant by "stop." They would allow their parishoners to think for themselves.

Gopher - 10:49 AM - Apparently you are not a practicing Christian. If you were, you would see the truth. As for the 3 churches that are singled out, they all have made deals with the Islamic leadership of the country in that they will not preach the truth. They've made a deal with the devil.

Ye gads...They have nothing better to do?

EJ Parsons, both of your posts are exactly right !!!....

Chersully, by stop, I meant trying to prevent the passage of Q 1, ie. on the No side. My experience with Congregationalists is that they are a very open and welcoming denomination to all. Therefore it seems fitting that they would try to bring awareness to the persecution of others, not ironic.

EJ Parsons,

How many people has Christianity persecuted, tortured and executed? You don't even want to go there. And by the way, Jesus is just fine, it's the organized religions that have twisted his actions that are the problem. I seriously doubt that Jesus ever condoned beating your wife or obtaining slaves, yet your bible sure does. What's up with that crap? Jesus was all about forgiveness and acceptance. He just wanted to help people and have others help people. Jesus loved the sinners and helped and accepted them just like he did anyone else. So where do so many christian denominations get off on condemning everyone except their denomination? You all need to get over yourselves and stop twisting a religion to suit your own purposes.

justmehere - 5:35 PM - And you say I twist things around!!!! Granted, Jesus is all about forgiveness (present tense) and He will accept us just as we are. However, He does not allow us to bring our baggage on the ride. If we believe in Him and ask Him to be our Lord and Savior, we have to leave the world and all of the sins behind, take up His cross, and follow along. Our baggage is left at the gate. Trouble with so many self-proclaimed Christians today, they want the free gift of eternal life, but they don't want to give up their sinful lifestyles. Sorry, but it doesn't work that way. It's Jesus' way, or the way of the world. And the way of the world leads to destruction. And that's the pure, untwisted truth. Accept it or don't.

I just wish that an all out war between Christians and Muslims would take place already. Once they would kill each other off, the rest of us could live in peace!

downeastdave,

they already tried that---it was called the crusades. Bad thing was---they killed off alot of "the rest of us" (our ancestors) along the way.

6:17 PM, EJParsons, all religions oppress others. All religions are bad.

God loves everyone no exceptions, we humans are the one who love with exceptions! Face it people we are broken and we are in need of fixing, we just need to go to the one who can help and hope that some day you find out who it is that can do just that! May God bless you and to all a goodnight!!!

EJParsons quoteAnd you say I twist things around!!!! Granted, Jesus is all about forgiveness (present tense) and He will accept us just as we are. However, He does not allow us to bring our baggage on the ride.

~~~~~~~~~
That is plain BS about not allowing us to bring baggage on the ride.
You have NO baggage<>BS<<
God Judges NOT YOUR<> BS<<
Reverse BS<>and you get STupid Bigot<<
Reverse ANYTHING EJParsons says and YOU get the True Spirit of God<<
What a Sick FREAK<<
downeastdave re:8:24 PM.....If an all out war between Christians and Muslims breaks out , you had better hope the Christians win.....Muslims are out to kill all infidels and that includes you , unless you convert to Islam.
.
On the subject of persecution of Christians..........Headline from Breitbart today.......".Egypt Muslims burn Christian shops"
So, ElectraGlide, What you're trying to say is that we don't have to change our lives in order to live for Christ? You are sorely mistaken. Maybe your true spirit of god allows you to do whatever you want, but the God of the Bible, the Only Living God, The Trinity of the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost does not. Repent means to admit your sins and turn away from them. So, call me whatever names you wish, but what I'm telling you is the truth.
Thank you EJParsons for speaking the truth amid the harshness of the world.
2:07 EJP>We ALL carry Sins>And if you can not Admit That
Then YOu my Friend have the wool over your eyes
and maybe you ought to go after the people around you
Instead of acting like Jesus ALL the Freakin Time<<
OMG Sin Free<>Yep it is all around ME<<
Oh Wait ((( EJP )))
Keep acting like JESUS
for I think there are some Gay People
That want to
Crucify YOU<<
For YOu they will probably Only use ROPE<<
I have an idea...next year they can all pretend they are homosexuals who hope to have the same rights as the good Christian straight married folks. Maybe instead of the church parking lot they can hide on a school playground. Jesus might even make an appearance.
EG - 5:02 PM - When did I ever say that I wasn't a sinner? What have you been spiking your Red Bull with? 5:05 PM - Are you insinuating that gay people would crucify Jesus? Who, or what, exactly is that spirit of god you speak of? I think many here would be interested in knowing.
