Topsham girl found after 2 days in ravine

By The Associated Press

TOPSHAM, Maine — Topsham police say a local teenager missing for two days was trapped in her car in a ravine.

Reports say Officer Troy Garrison found 17-year-old Kourtney Thibeault over an embankment early Friday after he noticed what appeared to be fresh damage to a large tree off Roberts Hill Road in Topsham.

Police later found Thibeault inside the vehicle. She was alert and immediately began speaking to Garrison.

She was freed from the wreckage and taken to the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A hospital spokeswoman said Friday that Thibeault’s family asked that no information be released about her condition.

Police said Thibeault left home on Tuesday to travel to a class in Auburn. She had not been heard from since 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

This gal was sure lucky that she didn't freeze to death while down in the ravine, and thank God the weather has been good.

Great work Officer Troy Garrison!

I am glad the girl is ok, but I was very suprised that she did not have a cell phone, I thought all 17 year old girls and boys have cell phones now a days! At least I always see them on the phone while they are driving???

This is one of those "wow" happenings and certainly could have ended tragically....being trapped in this vehicle in a ravine for two days and then as family and friends not knowing where this young lady was must have been horrific....the news did report that Kourtney had called her dad stating she was on her way home then never arrived.... It is likely she had a cell but in even minor accidents things in your vehicle get thrown about and even from the vehicle....I am glad the ending was positive and great job by Officer Garrison....best wishes to Kourtney and her family....

Wow, 3 dark dark, cold and lonely nights trapped in your car! Scary!! And even if she could have reached her cell phone, it says she was in a ravine, so service could have been blocked. Hoping she is okay and sending best wishes to her and her family.

God bless the observant Officer Garrison or this story might have had a very different ending. It restores my faith in Miracles.

Thank God this young lady is safe but why dose the family not want concerned people

to know how she is doing ?

Wonderful job officer Garrison... well done! I hope you get a commendation on your record for this one. Best wishes to the young lady and her family also.

someone was definitely watching over her those long cold nights....its been alot warmer then ususal but its still pretty cold at night. Hope she has a

speedy recovery!

who says holiday wishes dont come true. wonderful outcome, best wishes to the young lady and her family, good work officer!!!

Bobby, the family, especially the girl, has a right to privacy. Isn't it enough for inquiring minds to know she's OK?

Bobby54------Could be the family dosen't think it's anyone outside the family's business!-----As elliemae stated, it should be enough to know the young lady is thankfully OK.

The local news said that she had a cell phone but was unable to reach it.

Could be that she was texting on her cell and went off the road. Only she knows as I had a young lady last week texting while driving. She came right up to my passengers side and kept on texting and almost cut me off by crossing right in front of me and over two other lanes before she swirved and got back in her lane. Didn't faze her as when I hurridly got by her before she hit someone or injured herself, she had her head down texting away.....Who could she be sending a text message, that is more inportant than her life or others coming from the other direction....They always think that they will never hurt someone or hurt themselves by texting and driving, but when they do and kill someone....than the family that loss their loved one is suffering and her family is suffering from knowing that their son or daughter is held for manslaughter....I hate it when this happens but it happens almost every day....I am so glad this young lady is safe and that her and her family will have a blessed Thanksgiving....they deserve it as their daughter has survived what could of been a terrible tradgedy....Blessings to all this Thanksgiving....

Something is fishy about this story. The parents are covering up by not releasing her condition. Possible abuse at home?

I am at times completely blown away by the ignorance posted here.

Jeesh i guess because the family wanted some privacy it makes it horrible to us readers. I'm sure something caused the girl to go off the road, but she's alive which is the main thing!!

So glad for her and her family!! Days and nights alone trapped and possibly hurt in a car in a bottom of a ravine..too scary to think about! I hope she's home and recovering well!

9:18 - Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't texting. Don't get me wrong, texting/talking on cell phones while driving is NOT a good driving practice. You should have your full attention on the road at all times, but no where in this article did I see any mention of texting, so why make the jump prematurely? It aggravates me to no end that people feel the need to judge and make assumptions.

Adelaide; This is what these people do best... jump to whatever conclusions fit their vision of the world at large... They don't really care about the safe return of this girl to her family. They sit off to the side and make their assumptions as best they can and hope for a little bit more to the story... Some little bit extra to add to this potential tragedy... If the girl had been found dead then you could truely be sickened by their blackhearted glee... In truth they are not even worth considering... A happy ending to this girl and her family for certain. May all be blessed with such fortune....

Thank god she was safe. Its nice to see that the comments go to all the unemployed comedians. To bad the comment section were only left for the people directly involved with the story. Good luck and hopefully she did not recieve any life threatoning injuries.

Kids.....turn the GPS on in your phones. People on the talking texting issue again.....If she was talking/texting you don't suppose she might have learned a lesson being trapped in her car not knowing whether she'd live or die, or ever be found do you?

Poor girl, i'm so happy this lead to a happy ending. Im also glad the family is keeping her condition to themselves, we dont need to know more than she has been found, too many of us want to know every detail and medical condtions are a private matter.

Great job, Officer Troy Garrison!

so if the parents are having news conference after news conference, that would be bad parenting, and if they don't want to give any interviews with the media, someone yells abuse. how typical. Just be grateful that the kid is ok and leave the family alone.

Great job by an observent police officer. The outcome could have been more serious.

Wow crazy! I was suprised she didnt have cell phone either...most everyone does now adays. Poor thing was probably worried sick if anyone was going to find her in time! Good work Officer Garrison for paying attention to detail and saving a young womans life!
