Canadian merger worries Maine governor

By The Associated Press

MONTREAL — Maine Gov. John Baldacci says he's concerned about the proposed sale of NB Power of Canada to Hydro-Quebec and he is anxious to voice those concerns to Quebec Premier Jean Charest.

Baldacci deputy chief of staff David Farmer tells the Canadian Press the governor wants to have a better understanding of what the deal would mean for Maine, which imports some of its power from New Brunswick.

In the tentative $4.5 billion (U.S.) agreement, Hydro-Quebec would take over the majority of NB Power's assets — including transmission lines to Maine.

The proposal would give Hydro-Quebec more access to lucrative markets in the northeastern United States. Some fear it could cut off Canadian competitors from exporting energy to New England.

Well Baldy I guess you should have pushed for the independent production of Maine generated electricity instead of allowing Maine to become totally dependent on Canadian Electricity, Oil and Gas. You have allowed Maine to become an energy colony of Canada. Now Mainers will pay a heavy price.

Maybe Baldacci should have developed some sort of energy policy -- any sort of an energy policy -- himself, rather than worry about everyone else's.

At best, his policy is incomprehensible. At worst, it is nonexistent.

AS IF he's really worried about anything, except maybe his next junket or lavish Blaine House meal.

Even staunch Democrats I know think he's an embarrassment...

I think the pols shoud keep out of the utility business just look what the let fairpiont do

If it happens you have sold out the Norhtern half of the State. We have no power grid connection with southern maine...guess where the power comes from? Heck McCains has the farmers over a barrel in Northern Maine why not NB Power and the rest of us. The way this country is going maybe we can suceede to Canada

Could be good for Maine. Hydro-Quebec wants to reach urban New England, not Maine. But Maine is in the way, so HQ will have to pay to use Maine's transmission system. The trouble from Baldacci's point of view is, what will this do to his budding wind generation plans? It would probably throw a little cold water on them, but not necessarily kill them. If Maine fusses too hard, HQ can reach U.S. markets through Vermont and Maine would lose transmission fees.

Wrong.....It's all about Baldie possibly losing kick backs.

Should have built Dickey Lincoln.

David - Right on target. He's worried that his beloved wind power projects that are slowly but surely desecrating much of the scenic value of the central/northern part of the state might be jeopardized. As the information continues to unfold, citizens of Maine will at some future point finally have ALL the facts on these wind power projects being constructed in inland Maine. Probably right after the ex-cons and former Enron employees at First Wind and it's myriad subsidiaries, take the money and run, filing banckruptcy, and leaving this metal monsters to dominate the landscape. And don't tell me how there's decommissioning money set aside for that contingency. It's all on paper and nothing in tangible assets that wouldn't be wiped out by a Chap 7 filing. Baldy's boondoggle!

How is it still this moron is our governor? he wasnt very worried when fairpoint took over verizons landline phones.. he was some worried about gay marriage being legalized.. now he is worried about voicing his concerns to someone in canada?? Why doesnt he listen to what the public is voicing for concerns in our own state and pack his stuff and get out of the blaine house..

You can't stop the bus when its already rolling down the hill. Somebody should clue our Governor in that Canada is not part of the United States and they could care less what he has to say or want's. It's all about them making money, unlike us they are not a captive audience to abuse, taxation, and threats. International politics Baldacci style...better watch out Northern Maine, you are about to be sold out...again.
