Police cite black ice, speed in fatal New Sweden accident

NEW SWEDEN, Maine — State police are cautioning drivers about black ice on roadways caused by dense fog and below-freezing temperatures during this time of year after such factors contributed to a fatal accident in New Sweden on Tuesday.

State police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said the crash, approximately half a mile south of the New Sweden four corners on Route 161, took place at around 8:15 a.m.

Pelletier said 43-year-old Kori Ellis of Mapleton was northbound on Route 161 at the time of the crash.

Ellis had just passed a northbound vehicle when she lost control of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee as she returned to the driving lane.

Ellis careened off the roadway on the east side of Route 161 and struck a tree.

She was pronounced dead from severe trauma at the scene.

The vehicle had extensive damage to the driver’s compartment and roof. It was a total loss.

The Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department went to the scene and had to extricate Ellis from the vehicle.

Speed and black ice were determined to be factors in the accident.

Trooper Kim Espling is the primary investigator.
