Congressional campaign taking shape

By Glenn Adams, The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — It may seem early for the 2010 congressional campaign to start, but not for Jason Levesque. The Auburn businessman has been hitting fairs and factories for six months as the Republican sets his sights on Maine’s 2nd District congressional seat held by four-term Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud.

While the stage appears to be set for next year’s election in the 2nd District, the field is just beginning to take shape in southern Maine’s 1st District, where Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree will seek her second term. At least two Republicans are expressing interest as possible contenders in 2010.

“I’m thinking about it,” said Mark Gartley of Westbrook, a former Democrat who ran for Congress in the 2nd District in 1974 and ’78, losing to William Cohen and later Olympia Snowe. “I’m really disappointed in the direction of what’s going on in Washington these days,” added Gartley, a former Vietnam prisoner of war.

Dean Scontras, who came up short in the 2008 GOP primary against Charles Summers for the 1st District nomination, has set up an exploratory committee to collect financial pledges in case he becomes a candidate.

With no U.S. Senate race in Maine next year, the state’s two congressional races gain an elevated profile before Maine voters, who have not elected a Republican to Congress since James Longley Jr. won in 1994 in the 1st District.

Republican hopes in this cycle are buoyed by a historical pattern of incumbent presidents losing congressional seats held by members of his party in midterm elections, said Dwayne Bickford, a Republican strategist and former executive director of the Maine GOP.

Bickford is not surprised to see Levesque out so early to shake hands at mills, fairs and GOP town and county meetings.

“It’s not [early] if you want to defeat an entrenched incumbent,” said Bickford.

Scontras says in a Republican advocacy Web site that his party is energized by its candidates’ 2009 victories in gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia and is now looking for conservative candidates to run in competitive districts all across the country.

But the congressional races may not be so competitive in Maine, says a University of Maine political science professor.

“I think it’s tough going for a Republican in the 1st” district, said UMaine’s Mark Brewer. Even if Republicans do well in congressional races nationally, “it would have to take a real kind of perfect storm” of events to pull off a GOP win in the 1st District.

Brewer also thinks Michaud, a member of the Blue Dog Coalition of moderate and conservative Democrats, is not vulnerable even though he represents a district with a history of going to both parties.

Republicans hope that congressional action on some of the year’s top issues can sway voters their way. With the election just less than a year off, dueling issue ads that criticize and defend Michaud’s votes on health care are appearing on TV.

Levesque also has taken Michaud to task for his support on the health care reform measure the House passed and was spurned in his request for a “town hall” debate on the subject.

Four-term incumbent Michaud, meanwhile, is stressing his work in Congress on issues affecting veterans, trade, transportation and other issues while issuing reminders of the federal funds he’s had a hand in directing to Maine. The former paper mill worker from East Millinocket and the first Franco-American from Maine to be elected to federal office is a member of the committees on Transportation and Infrastructure, Veterans’ Affairs and Small Business.

In last year’s congressional race, Michaud trounced former college professor John Frary with two-thirds of the vote in a challenge that was not viewed as serious.

Levesque, an Army veteran, started the Argo Marketing Group in Auburn, which employs 28 people. For the upcoming race, Levesque announced in May and has been actively campaigning and raising money. The Federal Election Commission shows Levesque with $94,594 through Sept. 30, compared to $393,712 for Michaud.

In the 1st District, the FEC shows Pingree with $217,334, and no GOP candidate listed.

"...while issuing reminders of the federal funds he’s had a hand in directing to Maine."

People need to realize that politicians in DC deliver pork back to their home state with no regard for the future financial security of the country, which of course includes their state. The fiscal irresponsibility cannot continue. We cannot afford it and cheer every time Michaud, Snow, etc. bring back $500,000 for an under water basket weaving major at UMO or some other wasteful project. But unfortunately, that's what they do in DC. They just lie, cheat and make promises in exchange for money.

Look at all of the congressmen who sold out their vote on healthcare in exchange for a pork-projects added to the bill. That's like buying a $4,000 tv that you can't afford just because they throw in the extended warranty.

Now in the campaign, it will just get worse. We'll have unions and democrats dump millions into Michaud's campaign, because his vote is important to their continued agenda of driving this country into a total socialist welfare society. People need to wake up.

Michaud thinks "party" first .... constiuents last. He is nothing but a water carrier for the progressive movement. he does not represent maine people. If he spent half as much time working for people here as he does attempting to unionize south america then maybe we as a state would not be sinking like a rock in a pond. He pays nothing but lip service to veterans, and denies active duty funding that would keep them from loosing life and limb in roadside bombings. He supports the rules of engagement in Afghanistan that resulted in a Maine boy being killed. he is a flat out disgrace. Bluedog?? maybe in name only, he votes with his party 95% of the time. He has a sign on his backside that says "insert hand here", which Pelosi does, he is nothing but her hand puppet. VOTE HIM OUT!!!!!!!!!!

I voted for Mike Michaud every time he has run for office, I can't wait to vote in 2010 so I can vote against him. He has sold his vote many times and the people of Maine just don't know about it. When he came out and said why he voted for the healthcare bill, that was the icing on the cake for me. When politicans sell there vote to get promises made to them then they sell the people that put put them into office, they don't belong in that seat. I will even put a sign on my lawn for Mr. Levesque. There's got to be healthcare cost reform, but we have the best healthcare in the world.

The public mood has changed and who does the Republican party put up to run for elective office - Dean Scontras? Scontras is not a real republican, but a stale leftover opportunist from the Jesus freak days of the early 2000's. Com'e on Republicans.. you have to do better if you expect to get the vote from your base. The GOP needs real candidates.. not warmed over liberal voting republicans pretending to be conserative.

Michaud and any other politician that has been deaf to the voice of their constituants need to be shown the door. We need personal responsibility in whomever we put in office. Party doesn't matter as much as personal character. Give me a man or woman that will go against their parties grain and vote the voice of the people and they can count on my vote.

the republican party did not put up Dean Scontras, he is exploring the possibility for a run against Pingree and I wish him luck, he will need it to fight the campaign contributions from Pingrees virgin island boyfriend Donald Sussman, thats the same Donald Sussman that pumps his off shore tax free money into this state to " effect change" couple hundered thousand here, couple hundred thousand there.. pretty good for someone who lives in the virgin islands. His firm, paloma partners also got tax payer funded bailout money. But keep believing that democrat (socialists) are for the poor and down trodden. I know many poor people, cant say as I know anyone with the deep pockets of who Pingree's pimp.

Should BE a Very Interesting Year

Now they Have To Come To Us Again

For Our Vote

I for Sure Hope Yes I Hope and Vote for A Complete Message

Of OUT the Door

For Sure a Message of We the People

And NOT Special Interest IS what YOU are there FOR<<

Although not a card carrying Democrat,I voted for Mike in the previous election. My support for him has ended. For many of the reasons noted above and specifically for supporting Nancy's healthcare bill. Healthcare needs reform, no doubt, however her bill is not the solution.

After the stunt Michaud just pulled in switching his vote on the House healthcare package after his "come to Jesus" meeting with Obama at the White House, I will not only vote for Levesque but campaign for him, too! Changeneeded, your are absolutely correct in your assessment!!!!! Somebody, somehow has GOT to put an end to this financial lunacy and hold these idiots accountable. I don't care if it's a Republican or a Democrat and I think there millions of other people who feel the same way. George Bush abandoned the American people and Barak Obama has compounded it breathtaking fashion! When are people going to QUIT sniping at one another and place the blame squarely where it belongs- on the shoulders of every member of Congress who has sought to bankrupt this nation and, as a result, deny our children and grandchildren their dreams. Snowe and Collins are no better. Snowe has spent months being the belle of the ball with her coy "will she or won't she" dance over the Baucus bill, making herself look like a boob as she, too, played "let's make a deal". Collins has already gone on record in saying that she could see herself supporting a Democratic version of legislation. They both need to be voted out of office- Collins was just re-elected but she apparently doesn't realize how sick of them all we are and that we all have long memories. I urge everyone who loves this great nation to get out there and campaign for someone with fresh ideas and respect for the electorate!!

Republican or Democrat - just a choice between which band of criminals you want to steal your money and tell you how to live your life.

I am steadfastly campaigning against Michaud as I promise when I called his office last summer regarding the cap and trade bill. He is NOT voting in the interest of Maine people, but rather in his own self interest while he is being strong armed by Pelosi and Obama. When he voted for the health care bill, he also voted to restrict the paper mills from using "black liquor", left over energy, to help save the mills money. That is a bill attached to the health care bill as an effort to raise taxes (24 Billion) on the paper industry to pay for the health care plan. That is not good news for the paper industry and those who work in that arena. Michaud went on record as saying the health care bill is not good for seniors and small business, but he voted for it anyway because he has been promised by Obama that he will take care of it!

If you are interested in making a donation to the Levesque campaign, you can do it on line, or contact me via email at: moreairetta@gmail.com. I can offer you information on how you can help defeat Michaud in 2010. You can check out Levesque's website at: www.levesqueforcongress.com...If there is ever a time to stop MIchaud from being a lifer in congress, NOW is the time!! People are not happy with his voting record and how it effects Maine people. Cap and trade is simply a tax on your energy use, be it electricity, oil, coal, or other....it enables the government to control your energy usage! Bad for Maine...good for BIG government!!

Running against Michaud? You have my vote

JWBooth has it right... it really doesn't matter who is in power as both current parties are corrupted by power and money. As long as we have a two party system, we are going to get the same sheet year after year. Things won't change until the american electorate demands real change and votes in greens, socialists, libertarians whoever...

The sad truth is that when you turn out people like Michaud and Pingree, which I am all in favor of, you still have to pay them for the rest of their lives and provide them with better healthcare than most Americans enjoy. Unfortunately, Congress changed the Constitution under the Clinton administration so nobody can ever cut their pay or benefits. Next time you pick make sure you pick someone with integrity who cares more for country than self.

Who ever said that we have the best health care system in the world is out of touch and needs to move out of Maine so he or she can see the real world out there. U.S. is 17th in the world on health care and we have millions without health care and as soon as the health insurance companies get their way your health care premiums are going to sky rocket and when you get sick they will drop you and even more if you have a pre exsisting condition you are history....your on your own like so many others in Maine who had to forfieit their home in order to take care of their love ones...aren't we a great country....we spend billions and billions of dollars to build up Iraq and Afganistan but when it comes to taking care of our people....sorry other countries come first....you fought and died for nothing....I am sick to think that I took two bullets in Vietnam for this country that doesn't give a dam about its people....
