Comment period ending for Maine ocean wind sites

AUGUSTA, Maine — The public comment period is coming to an end on the state’s search for potential sites for offshore wind power demonstration projects along the Maine coast.

Monday is the last day that the Department of Conservation is accepting comments on potential sites.

The state has narrowed its list of candidate sites to four. They are in areas near Boon Island off the southern coast, Damariscove Island near Boothbay, Monhegan Island along the midcoast, and Cutler in Washington County.

Legislation passed in June mandates that the state identify one to five demonstration sites where floating platforms, anchoring systems and new lightweight blades can be tested for deep-water, offshore wind power.

A final decision is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 15.

The governor and his friends have been pushing this. The only comment that mattered was Acadia national Park. Bar Harbor fihsermen lucked out. Everybody else is screwed. This was decided long before the comments officially started. We're going to lose fishing bottom.
