Worcester spearheads placement of wreaths on vets’ graves

HARRINGTON, Maine — A convoy of vehicles carrying 17,000 Maine-made balsam fir wreaths will leave Harrington early Sunday en route to Washington, D.C., and Arlington National Cemetery, the 18th consecutive year that Worcester Wreath Co. has supplied the greenery to place on veterans’ graves and spearheaded the convoy that distributes them.

The Patriot Guard Riders will continue their tradition of escorting tractor-trailers filled with the donated wreaths.

In all, more than 100,000 wreaths will be placed in 350 locations, including Arlington National Cemetery and at veterans cemeteries in America and abroad.

Maine Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins initiated a resolution adopted by Congress to have Sunday, Dec. 12, designated as Wreaths Across America Day. On that day, more than 100,000 wreaths will be placed at the base of the gravestones of veterans at more than 350 cemeteries across the country.

“Wreaths Across America, true to the vision that Morrill and Karen Worcester conceived 18 years ago, has become a nationwide gesture of gratitude to our veterans and their loved ones,” Snowe said Thursday. “Through this resolution today, we humbly extend our appreciation to each of these patriots, whose actions truly speak to our better angels, and join them in paying homage to our nation’s heroes.”

Collins said, “In this season of giving, the thoughts of all Americans turn to those who have given us the most precious gift of all, our freedom.”

The convoy will leave Worcester Wreath Co. in Harrington early Sunday, Dec. 6, stop in Bangor for a ceremony, on to Auburn for another ceremony and then make its way to Arlington with 17,000 wreaths donated by Worcester Wreath Co. The laying of the wreaths will be on Saturday, Dec. 12, when across the nation, wreaths will be placed simultaneously on more than 400 graves or memorials to remember the sacrifices of the country’s veterans.

The Wreaths Across America story began more than 18 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Co. initiated a tradition of donating and placing wreaths on headstones at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Worcester family business continues to be a major supporter of the project, donating more than 25,000 wreaths in 2008. More than 100,000 wreaths will be sponsored by individuals, businesses and groups from communities nationwide.

Wreaths will be placed in all 50 states from Maine to Alaska and Hawaii, at several locations in Iraq, and at 24 national cemeteries on foreign soil.

For people who want to support the project, wreath sponsorships are available online. A complete list of participating locations is available on the Web site at www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.

what is david whitney doing this weekend?

Is this the same gentleman that hires the illegal aliens that keep Maine folks from getting a job?

Mr. Whitney is probably resting after a busy week. He is throwing a huge Christmas party for his 700+ employees Friday. He has also been doing interviews with Fox News. Throughout the day Friday, Fox News will be broadcasting live from Whitney Wreath and it is the featured "Feel Good" story. He is an incredible boss and deserves this recognition!

way to go BernieB just couln't have a good story without the banter of the left wing. Bah humbuh. Thank you Mr. Whitney for all the wreaths being placed on our countries fallen soldiers.

I wish to thank and show my respect to all the volunteers each year that make this wreath placement a success. A handmade wreath warms the hearts of many far and wide.

Thanks to the Worcester family for their commitment to our fallen heroes.

Yes, A Great Job You`al

Hope to Be A Part of This Next Year

As The PGR are Also A Great Part of This

And it it not only the Patriot Guard escorting the convoy.

Hats off to all the Law Enforcement Officers who have taken time off to participate in the escort, and especially the Maine Police Emerald Society.

"Git er Done!"

And a THANK YOU to the various Maine Civil Air Patrol Squadrons who will be providing the Color Guard.

What a farce. Maine wreaths made by Illegal Alien Mexicans with brush imported from Canada.

clamchowdah:

Give me a break,

#1) The wreaths are not hand made, they are machine made.

#2) The brush comes from Canada, not Maine

#3) The Wreaths are made by ilegals.

Also can sombody tell me why Worcester lost the contract to LL Bean?

It was because they found out that the wreaths were not hand made and that the balsam wasn't even from Maine.

False advertiseing.

I think that it's nice what he does for the veterans, but lieing and decieving bussinesses and the public about his Maine Hand made Wreaths is just wrong.

Also the whole reason that he does what he does for the Veterans is solely for publicity which in itself is wrong.

If you can't do something nice without being recogonized for your contribution then it'f for the aspect of publicity.

Now if a person was to donate that many wreaths and not reveal their name or business then that would be actually comming from the heart.

Also if the 17.000 wreaths were hand made there would be alot of doctor bills for the injuries for repetitive motion from makeing them by hand, and by running a machine by hand does not make the product hand made.

Oh, for crying out loud. Every year, it's the same old comments from the same old idiots.

I for one will be on the side the road on Sunday to cheer the trucks on when they pass, as I have always done. Thank you to the Worcester's for continuing this tradition even in the hardest of years.

Oh for crying out loud. Every year ,it's the same old idiots that are replying about the same old comments.

I for one will be working because I have to earn a living.

I haven't seen anybody step up to the podium to say why Worcester lost the contract to LL Bean.

I haven't seen anybody say that the wreaths aren't made by machine.

I haven't seen anybody say that the brush isn't from Canada.

We all know from the past that he has been caught harbouring ilegals who he has work in his company, so we don't need proof of that.

And I said that it's nice of him for whaat he does for the veterans,,, but all he needs to be is honest about his products and how they are made.. Whitney in a couple of yours will mop the floor up with his products.

anonon, You are so right on. Every word you said is true. At least you are not blinded by false patriotism. If companies want to buy and donate wreaths to the WAR DEAD this is fine and patriotic. But to lie about how the wreaths are made and who made them for free publicity is just plain wrong and unpatriotic. Illegal Aliens could care less about our War Dead they only worship the Dead Presidents on our Dollars.

Knightscross:

Worcester also lost his contract to LL Bean because he got caught up in his lies.

The fraud/criminal investigations number is 1-800-829-0433 nationwide for immigration and Naturalization Service

Investigative Office . Ccome on all you folks who think thier are so many illegal immagrants working in the wreath business, just call the number.

Oh, make sure you get rid of your illegal sized lobsters, the jacked deer hanging in the barn, the pot growing in the cellar, thw eight machine you bought with your workers comp cash/benefits, and hide the $ 40,000 truck you pad cash for so you could claim only $ 20,000 annual income on your income tax , etc., before you do, as a you may just be turining yourself in and they may arrest you for false reporting and tax invasion, jackin deer, etc.

LOL

* If you are implying I dont work-you're wrong, Sunday happens to be my church day- I'll take the time to go see the trucks off though. It's a wonderful thing he's doing.

I haven't seen anybody step up to the podium to say why Worcester lost the contract to LL Bean.

* Do we really care? Does it really matter? This article is actually about the wreaths to Arlington, isn't it?

The fact that he lost the wreath contract to Whitney's, really isn't mine, yours, or anyone else's business. Did it hurt your pocket book? I know neither Whitney or Worcester personally- but having lived here all my life- I know " of them" . I say, spread the wealth around. Worcester had the LL Bean contract for many years, now let another local boy have at it.

I haven't seen anybody say that the wreaths aren't made by machine.

* Again, I say- do we care? Even if they are, they're still Maine made. The brush is fed by hand. All mute points, however, because, it's none of our business.

I haven't seen anybody say that the brush isn't from Canada.

* Can't comment here because I don't know. But again-I really don't care. Why would you?--you obviously have a huge vendetta against the Worcester's.

We all know from the past that he has been caught harbouring ilegals who he has work in his company, so we don't need proof of that.

* Being from Washington County- I agree that there is a problem with that in this area. People who don't live here and read about us call us " racist" because they just don't get it. However- I cannot imagine that the government is not all over the wreath companies this time of year, as well as the Blueberry growers in that season. Unless you have some valid proof that he is using illegals THIS SEASON, I suggest you stop casting stones just to have something to complain about Worcester about.

Look- this guy is a local businessman. He's probably made some mistakes, but why oh why do people like you all have to jump on every word written about him to put him down? He lost the Bean contract, I'm sure that was pretty darned hard on him, his family and his business. But it's his business, not yours. He is leaving Sunday to deliver the wreaths to the graves of our honored. you already said that was a good thing. Why can't you shut your pie hole and leave it at that!

@fredrogers~~@coastalblogger~~Nicely Said

It Is about our Finest Our American Soldiers

They Sacrificed and Died for Us All

Please Do NOT Tarnish That

Enough--I know the Worcester through friends--let's see some real reporting instead of the PR bull.

If Mr. worcester were less of a man he'd have spoken out before.

Slander----what kind of person states facts like gospel -that aren't true

I know--

The brush used at Worcesters was 90 percent from the stands of balsam he has spent thousands of dollars to care for to meet LLBeans demand for US brush. He's proud of his land--take a ride down east and look at it, Who ever says elsewise is lying.

Whitney is buying Canadian stuff--it even says so in the catalog.

Whitneys migrant housing is a mile out in the woods--but he's recruited everyone he could find.

If anyone understood the area they'd realize that a lot of people can't work the seasonal jobs because they would lose their welfare. Migrants aren't cheaper--and there are 10 Gov workers looking over every businmans shoulder to see if they're doing something wrong

By the way--Whitney said last week he had 800 workers--now he's at 400--can't be too good a boss to lose them at that rate

When people write stuff like accusing people and slandering--sign your name--

The rumor is that LL Bean did a lot less wreaths last year and wouldn't pay worcester their contract so that's what ended it.

LL Bean may not be all they're cracked up to be.

Some reporter should check on that. If it's true it would be on the court records

What I do know is that Morrill has taken time for the veterans because he wants to and did it for years 15 at least before anyone knew or cared.

When people say 123 this is fact--you should give us your name and proof --that's pretty mean damaging stuff.

I'll be standing on the bridge waving my flag on Sunday--

Have a good safe trip.

How about some real reporting BDN

Lauriedowneast:

I live downeast and know for a fact that the reason he lost the contract is because he was freezing the wreaths and were not fresh Maine Hand Made Wreaths like he claimed,,, Its called False Advertisement.

Also as I stated before yes it is nice for what he does for the veterans, but I don't think that he is doing it for the reason that he claims, he is doing it for the publicity. He claims that they are Maine Hand Made Wreaths, the only truth to that is that they are made in Maine with canadian brush,by machine.

How can a company make 17000 wreaths by hand, not only that but with the bug that is destroying the brush in Maine, where would he get that much Maine brush, his land is not extinct to the bug, thats why he had to get the brush from Canada. If he would just be honest about his product then it would be fine, but everybody knows that the products are made by machine, the brush is from Canada. Hopefully he's not harbouring ilegals anymore.

People need work in downeast and he should hire locals to help them out instead of hire ilegal cheap labor.
