’Tis Fox Season in Machias

BANGOR DAILY NEWS PHOTO BY SHARON KILEY MACK

FOX News arrived in Machias on Thursday to report on Washington County’s wreath industry and Whitney’s Originals, the world’s largest balsam wreath maker. David Whitney (center) explains his business, which employs 400 people as tippers, wreath or centerpiece makers, truck drivers or shippers at nine locations in the county and sells its products direct or through QVC shopping network and L.L. Bean. FOX News will broadcast live at 9:50 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. Friday what Whitney called “the feel-good story of the day.” The broadcasts will conclude with a lobster, steak, potato and blueberry pie dinner Whitney is providing his employees. FOX is producing a series on companies that are growing despite a struggling economy.

Fox business ?

See that? There is the proof that things are all peachy keen in Washington County. By golly, who needs an LNG plant when people can make wreaths 6 or 7 weeks a year. Why they might even make enought to pay the rent and food bill that month. The benefits are excellent too I heard.

At least Washington County is getting some attention which it desperately needs. Its people are hardworkers and rather it is seasonal or not I bet the people that are employed at Whitney's Originals are grateful they have a little extra income. One thing about Washington County folks is they have a lot of ingenuity and are resilient to keep moving ahead despite the State of Maine.

OMG! Fox news is doing a story about a business in Maine? MSNBC will go bonkers. Keithie will call them vile names and blame O'reilly and Beck. Rachel will say it isn't good for the President's agenda and that the poor wreaths are being taken advantage of. Eddie will scream they are non-union and it will hurt labor and that this is a good example of why we need card check. Chrissy...well Chrissy will just be Chrissy and do his best to condemn it because it won't help GE get their cap and trade money.

Dave has done good for himself. And the community..

It's on the regular Fox I think..Suppose to be on when Sheppard Smith is on at 3pm.

Fox did a story on another Maine business, Maine's Own Organic Milk Company (www.moomilkco.com), on Nov. 23. They were filming live at Smiling Hill Farms in Westbrook. It was part of a segment called "On the Job Hunt." It's good to see Maine businesses making national news.

from my understanding of the political climate in washington county, this guy should expect a welcoming throng ;-)

Wow lilmikey, that is quite the crystal ball you have there. What a spin around the block that was!

They should have covered Tinker Town Wreaths, much better wreaths at much better price, instead of the huge wreath Oligarchy.

Do you mean Tinkerville???????

We stopped making wreaths when Diamond Dave bought me out......

It wasn't in the towns ordanance to make wreaths..

Fox news! Their Evil I tell you. EVIL!

Dave did a great job, he was on about 9:26..

Very good for being on live TV....

Makes a TRUE DOWNEASTER proud.

It's good that so many people make sure they aren't otherwise employed during these few weeks, so Dave can give them a good feed. Now if he can just figure out how to get machines to make these wreaths like the blueberry end of the business has been able to figure out how to harvest that crop without rakers, won't that be great?

I think you can have a machine make them but they aren't as good.....

People are too lazy anyway to rake... Not back in the day when I did it...

Most kids now are too lazy to get out there and rake. Getting up at 5am to meet the van to goto the fields.

You make the same generalizations, Telefunkinu47 that I heard forever. IF you could get a job raking berries, you would be getting no more per box, $3.00 tops, that you would have gotten 50 years ago. Compare that with the cost of living. And again, who can get a job that lets them take off for 5 weeks to work a seasonal job? Have you seen all the capital that is being thrown into clearing fields and woods of rocks and trees so they can grow even more blueberries? It's the rat chasing it's tail, more berries produced the less per pound you get for them and unless you own half the county or become a niche organic grower, you can't make money for the year during a 5 week stretch.

I saw them picking rocks all summer on one field.....In the long run using a machine to harvest them will be for the best..

When I raked the money went for school clothes. I got smart and got a part time job so I didnt have to rake. It is a crappy job no doubt.

For Me; I have to wonder how much more

A Positive Can Be Turned Into A Negative

Dang, Can We Not Just Enjoy the Season

And That Means No Matter What You Want To Call

The Season<

Maybe while FOX news is in town they should check out the illegal dumping of sewarge by Machias. Lets FFFFFFIX IT!!

"""The broadcasts will conclude with a lobster, steak, potato and blueberry pie dinner Whitney is providing his employees."""

did david do this last year too or is this a publicity stunt. if he did, my apologies for bringing it up. if not, that would be the real david i remember.

I just hope David Whitney has 400 Maine citizens working for him. Hope he is using E-Verify to sort out the Illegal Aliens. Good luck Dave. I hope you are supporting the working legal citizens of Washington County.

I've worked for Whitney Wreaths before...not in Machias but another location in Maine and we never got fed Lobster we were lucky enough to get pizza. At the end of the year we got a vest that said Whitney Wreaths. Merry Christmas!

Is There a Difference Between Pizza and Lobsta

Ya Dang Right

Is there a Difference Between Channel 2 and Fox

Yep, and Try to Tell Me that NO other Co. in Maine

Or Anywhere Else Would NOT Do the SAME<<

electraglide, you are exactly right...but it doesn't make it right.

listen, i think what david whitney is doing for washington county is great for the folks here and for the entire county and state BUT he he is what some would consider a pompass a$$. IMHO

If you don't like Dave then you don't like him.

Atleast the guy don't sit on hit butt like a lot of the posters here....

I'm sure Joseph Goebbels came up with a lot of heartwarming stories about plucky Bavarian peasants who were too proud to organize for better working conditions because that would mean they were communists. Fox News is an oxymoron.

Yikes, am I being stalked

Now remember I only receive lap dances

I no Givey

Come on folks. This guy is giving the left something, giving the right something and is helping to do his part. The left should be thankful he is providing jobs. The right is happy and thankful that at least ONE news organization is airing this. Showing that small business is the backbone of our economy. And so what if it is seasonal? Ask the400 or so if they are happy with the work...or maybe some of you would rather they go collect unemployment. And if this guy is using this for promotion...good for him. Maybe it will bring more business in to show support of what he is doing and he can hire more people. At this point in time...maybe we need more pompous a$$es like him so people can be working.

It is Friday Electra, free lap dance tonight...

you know your not talking about a national company here! just what do you people expect. if there is no whitney"s originals where do these 400 people find seasonal work? i mean what is it you all expect. he does have the right to make somewhat of a living out of this. i'd rather have pizza and a vest than lobsta, can't wear a lobsta when it's cold.now if someone else could figure out how to employ another 400 locals there would be less with time on thier hands to complain about someone whois trying to help.maybe that outfit over in columbia falls, oh no that's right they would rather house cheap labor from somewhere else.

There are just some people that no matter what you do, it is not good enough for them.

Confucius says:

You have problem with this, get off your a$$ and do better. If not, quit your whining.

how many of those wreaths are canadian? after all maines brush this year sucks with the blight, and the athids diease, where;d ya get all those wreaths dave? any of them from 2 older ladies who lost 172 of theirs? hummmmmmmmm bug!!!

I am the husband of Valorie Geel one of the ladies that had the 172 wreaths stolen this week. I just want everyone to know that Noreasternellys crude comment about Whitneys buying our wreaths couldnt be further from the truth. In fact as soon as David Whitney found out about it he called me and offered to replace every wreath. Its amazes me that people can spout off about things when they dont have a clue about what they are talking about. There isnt anyone around that does as much for the people of Downeast Maine as David Whitney and his whole family, so I would say that Ms Nelly might find something that she knows something about to take up her idol time.

I think a Gigantic tissue may be required for the Jealous whiners..

freebird37, of course he offer you folks the wreaths. What is shocking is that David didn't contact the BDN with a press release stating so.
