Storm gives shovels, plows first job of the season

From Staff and Wire Reports

Much of Maine got its first considerable snowfall Saturday night and into Sunday.

Down East areas received the most snow from the weekend storm, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou. Whiting in Washington County tallied the most snow with 10 inches, followed by Cherryfield and Columbia Falls with 7 inches each. Ellsworth had 8.6 inches, and Bangor had 6 inches. Camden received 5.4 inches.

Snowfall amounts dropped off Aroostook County, with Houlton receiving 2.5 inches and Presque Isle just a trace at two-tenths of an inch.

The snowy conditions caused minor problems for motorists. Police in Hancock County reported several property-damage accidents. In Mount Desert, a motorist was injured when his vehicle rolled over on Route 102, but his injuries were not serious, according to dispatchers.

Elsewhere in Maine, a half-foot of snow fell at Sanford, while Biddeford and the Portland jetport each recorded 6.5 inches, and Lewiston got 5 inches, according to NWS reports Sunday.

The storm also left New Hampshire covered with a blanket of white. Madison, N.H., got 7 inches, Dover got 5, Concord 4 inches and Gorham just an inch.

The weather service says more snow could be on the way Wednesday.

BDN writer Rich Hewitt in Ellsworth and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It sure was a lot of fun to move the snow. Ah. Winter.

I put my shovel outside my front door Firday night in anticipation of shoveling Saturday morning. Imagine my surprise when I went out to take care of the snow and my shovel had been stolen. It's a good thing WalMart was open at 6am.
