BANGOR, Maine — Eliot Cutler, running on a platform of energy independence, health care reform and reducing government spending, officially announced his candidacy Wednesday to become Maine’s next governor.

The independent candidate and native of Bangor held events in Portland and Bangor to throw his name into a crowded and growing field of 2010 gubernatorial candidates.

The 63-year-old Cutler said he’s not worried about any of the other candidates and believes his political independence will resonate with Maine voters, who have elected two independents in the past 35 years.

“It’s wide open now, but if you look back at history, you’ll find that things narrow pretty quickly,” Cutler said Wednesday during an interview at a hotel at Bangor International Airport. “By September of next year, there are likely to be four candidates, and I expect to be one of them.”

Cutler initially cut his political teeth under longtime lawmaker Edmund Muskie, a Democrat who spent 20 years representing Maine in the U.S. Senate after spending four years as Maine’s governor. Cutler also worked in Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s administration. Cutler admitted that he was a Democrat at the time, when the party was one of reform.

“The [Democratic] party today is a shadow of what it once was,” Cutler explained. “In fact, both sides are dominated by the extremes. An independent voice is what Maine needs.”

Cutler, an attorney with considerable wealth, is running a privately funded campaign. In his announcement speech Wednesday, he touched upon some of the things he would tackle as Maine’s governor.

“Mainers are worried, discouraged and angry,” he said. “They don’t believe government is on their side. But I know we can make Maine work again.”

Cutler outlined three initiatives that he sees as crucial:

— Maine Energy Resources, a public power authority that generates electricity throughout Maine from renewable resources and stops the exportation of electricity.

— Maine Wellness, a new statewide framework to deliver essential health services affordably.

— Maine Change, a task force that would do the tough work of eliminating government programs that are either redundant or don’t work.

More information on Cutler’s policy positions and initiatives can be found online at www.cutler2010.com.

I'll Check out his web site Never heard of his some I can't what I think of his issues. But I do have a problem with him being in the Carter crew! Talk about a screwed up four years when that clueless wonder was in the White house!

But the question of the day is he better than Baldacci and would he ruin the state of maine more than Baldacci alreayd has

Need a common sense man in the house someone thats not known a non-lawyer a peoples man. This guy don't have a clue

dkenzie...the question isn't whether he is better than Baldacci, the question is, is he better than the other candidates. Personally, I don't think this is the guy we want! As atwoodz said, he worked in Pres. Carter's administration. It doesn't say what he did, but I'm not liking that!

thats right farmer 101 this state and this country has to get rid of the rich lawyer types who are compleately out of touch with the working poor and oniy concerned with the super rich on wall street as job after job goes over seas to the cheap labor markets that we americans can not compete with due to the cost of living in america we need to get rid of all politicians who support NAFTA CAFTA and all the others TAs so we can once again become a productive country until we elect smart people from main street we are screwed

Went to his web site because his name rang a bell. His Father was my physician when I was growing up. Dr. Cutler was the last of the Great family Doctors. Don't see that kind anymore. His mother Catherine was a grand lady. But I never met Eliot. Even with his impressive background & heritage he comes out of nowhere. Does that gives him a clean slate? Well he lives south of Route 3 so that is a strike against him. Keep an eye on him folks - he could be a contender.

On his website he talks about using "our onshore and offshore wind, our tides and our ample sun."

I think this person sounds like a bit of a dreamer and needs to look into the economics of these things. In Maine, the use of any of these as grid-scale power would be an economic debacle, reliant solely on subsidies and guaranteed to make electricity rates soar. The subsidies are well on their way to drying up.

Moonbat!

Farmer and wonderingwhy why don't you throw your hats in the ring?

Since two renewable power plants have aleady closed to make room for THE WIND CROOKS. We export energy now..and have WAY more than ME needs.

I have to ask.

Can he prioritize?

Have the WIND CROOKS already contributed . BOUGHT, I should say.

So far, none of the announced candidates look like winners to me. Anybody seen those Otten tv commericals where he is speaking from a podium? Take a gander at the logo he has hanging on the front of the podium next time you see it - it's a shameless rip off of Obamas

Well, so far all I read is nit picking complaints and speculation of doom and connection with the past. Have any of you ever had a connection with the past that you regretted? Of course not, everyone here is good at finding fault and being negative. No wonder Maine has so much difficulty getting ahead, many cannot or do not think ahead. Seek change and you might get it, look back and you will get what you have always had.

His slogan is a bit strange,

"Maine Can Work"

I find myself thinking,

well no kidding Shirlock, thanks for the update.

Can we also walk and chew gum too?

LURC was just busted for taking $1.7 million from Plum Creek, who's application they decided upon - favorably. http://www.mpbn.net/Home/tabid/36/ctl/ViewItem/mid/3478/ItemId/10118/Default.aspx

What do each of the gubernatorial candidates think about making it a requirement that all entities getting paid must make full disclosure. This would include all non-profits who often shill for corporations. I say the full disclosure is retroactive for five years.

Let's see who got what and then compare this with their positions.

I'm looking at Paul LePage as being the best for Maine. He has a terrific record as Mayor of Waterville. If he can do for the state what he has done for Warville, we might be able to get back on track.

Energy independence - start up Maine Yankee!

Health care reform - Get rid of Dirigo and cut down on the regulations, such as allowing premium changes dependent on present illness. If you are a poor driver your car insurance is higher than others. If you have an unhealthy lifestyle, you should have a higher premium.

Reduce government spending - paycut for the governor and staff (this is the biggest joke of this candidate. What democrat in the last 100+ years has ever reduced government spending?? This does need to be done, but will never happen under a democrat, at least not significantly.

How about a 10% tax, across the board, no matter what your income is, and do away with property tax, income tax, sales tax, and the other plethora of other taxes, including federal taxes.

So many people talking about seeking change! Such a nebulous thought. I'll vote against any "change". Come back to me when you have something concrete/definite that you want to do that shows good stewardship.

the last thing this state needs right now is another DEM from Bangor in the Blaine house!!!!!

Energy is a product.... like blueberries, potatoes and fish. Should we stop exporting those things too if we use more than we need here in the state? That is a really poor argument in regards to energy production here in the state. It is a commodity and traded as such. EVERY state has excess generation for reliability purposes should a major power plant have an outage.

This is all about bringing jobs back to Maine, not matter what they are. The only way to bolster this economy is to bring back manufacturing jobs that have been driven out of the state due to higher than average energy costs and heavy tax burden. We need tax relief for companies to come back to Maine... and that is not going to be done with a tax cut for the common people, Some tough decisions are going to have to be made... and many of them are going to be unpopular.

Now is the time for the great journalist from MPBN , Susan Shanon, to investigate DEP's "gifts".They have felt no compulsion to be accountable to the public or to tell the truth. Worse than LURC. Changed state noise decible law so the criminal corporation, First Wind, would be in compliance.

And also the state AG office. They treat complaints against First Wind like it was a big joke. No compulsion to represent the public..just govt.Or to tell the truth.

And then if there is time. ...the governor's office. Has he received any gifts from First Wind? The last few years , the wind farms have been his sole agenda.

When the story of ME state govt corruption blows, it will be of epic proportions. We are getting closer every day.

Independent ?? I think not.....Just like the two democrats in republican clothing we have now as our senators. Come on people wake up.

I do not care which side of the Isle

Just a Good Man / Women Will Do For ME

I hope E. Cutler considers the facts behind big wind. So different from other exporters of Maine products, heavily subsidized windsprawl not only makes a fraction of their advertised power their existence depends on destroying miles of ridgelines and mountains and devastates the scenery from our lakes thereby wreaking havoc on Maine's tourism industry. Are they afraid of repercussions from Gov B if they complain? Any candidate must also consider the ever increasing health problems which big wind would like to have them ignore. Which of the 21 will stand up to big wind and stop squandering Federal dollars on obsolete technology which only diverts funding from projects which might actually have benefits? I am betting Lynne Williams will have some common sense answers backed by real science. Is Maine ready for a Green Independent Governor?

Snowe and Collins both voted for g bushes policies which got us into the financial ruin we are experiencing..Neither of them questioned the billions lost in no bid contracts for a war fought for big oil. They are great republicans. Working for the corporations, not the people.

What more could a republican ask for? Constitution stripped in the 8 years of gbush. Not excusing the democrats. They serve the corporations too. Just look at our governor.

thanks for that info on LURC................ Matt Jacobson who is also running said he would get rid of LURC and turn those duties over to the county commisioneers......Mayor LePage is also someone to look into ... he has said the only jobs government can create are government jobs....he has a lot of common sense....something desperately needed in Augusta. This guy is a democrat, attempting to pass himself off as an independent.

coopah wrote: Well he lives south of Route 3 so that is a strike against him. Now I now see why meat-baldacci has done such a great job....was from north of Route 3!

Folks, look out your windows. There is no economic growth in Central/Northern Maine; all that grows are the welfare and unemployment roles. Maybe it is about time we elect a Governor who lives where business growth exists; maybe a governor who might, by having lived in both central and southern Maine, be able to awaken some economic development up here. I am sick of seeing our young people move to Cumberland and York counties for jobs that could be in Bangor. And those jobs will never be here as long as we continue to believe we up here are better than those in the south....quite frankly, I am starting to wonder if we are not the lesser.
