Maine House Republican drops party affiliation

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Minority Republicans in the Maine House have lost a member.

Rep. Jim Campbell of Newfield said Thursday he's withdrawn from the Republican Party and will become the only legislator with no party affiliation. That leaves the House with 95 Democrats, 55 Republicans and one unenrolled or independent member. The Senate also is controlled by Democrats

Campbell said his move was a long time coming. He said he's frustrated with the Republican Party in Maine and nationally for failing to address the health care crisis in a meaningful way.

Welcome back from the "Dark Side"

Adios RINO.....

Sounds like he's tired of being " Mr. Who? No, never heard of him". Only way to get his name in the paper.

Gopher~~Well Said~~Love IT<<

He must be for higher taxes, less freedom, more government control. And the Country and state going Bankrupt!

When a candidate runs an election campaign under a party umbrella and is elected to serve the people, most likely elected by people associated with said party, and then said elected official wants to leave the particular political party that elected him or her to serve, they then should have to vacate such position and run another election to be voted back into service if the people so choose....you don't want to continue to serve the people's party that elected you get out of office....Crazy!

He must have been a RINO because if he had a back bone he would be working with his party to defeat government run healthcare and push for citizens to be able buy health insurance outside the state of Maine. So it would be affordable. If you think the government run healthcare is less expensive than it is now wait see if this thing passes everyone wil be broke and the government will be running all of us. Well I guess if you don't pay taxes its no skin off your back because you don't have an investment, so you reap the benefits from other peoples work and sweat and making sure thay can't have anything for they efforts. Its so easy just give up because if you have no ideas and therefore blame someone else for your lack of igenuity and if you did maybe coming up with an alternative, which a lot of republicans have, but the democrats have successfully shut down because they want total control over our lives.

bogger~~spoken just like a Insurance Pharmo Lobbyist

You must be so proud of yourself

I bet you think you have Woke Up>Ya Right<

No I am just a working stiff paying my way and a lot of others way. Never sold insurance I just happen to beleive in hard work and take responsibilty for what I do and don't expect other peolpe to pay my way. I beleive in capitalism, left alone it works. By the way, yes, I am proud of myself and I am extremely proud of my son & daughter because they are paying for there own as well. I can't help it if I was raised with a conscience and passed on to my children. Good luck Electra glide with putting people down.

Congratulations to Mr. Campbell for making a difficult, but ethically responsible decision. Once you are elected to public office you promise to serve all the people, and not just your "party".

In this case, Mr. Campbell recognized that both parties failed in solving our national healthcare crises. The Republicans, the party of "no", chose to be obstructionists. Even Senator Snowe's "trigger" idea would kick the problem down the road by years, while enriching the health insurance companies and big pharma. The Democrats are divided and confused, some motivated by personal and religious prejudices, others are seduced by political contributions from insurance and big pharma lobbyists. And the President, instead of leading real healthcare reform that is accessible and affordable by all Americans, such as Medicare For All where everyone would pay into a single payer system--one with no co-pays, no denials of care, one where you could chose your own doctor whose sole responsibility would be your health, who in turn would be compensated fairly and promptly--he chose to appease his political opponents by allowing a useless monster of a bill that makes things worse instead of better go forward. No wonder that Mr. Campbell decided he wanted no part of this deception of the public. I am proud of his decision.

There is a better way: Medicare For All. Everyone pays a little and everyone benefits a lot. When we care about each other, we are a better, healthier and more productive nation.

Republican party doesn't need a quitter anyway.I hope you don't get in office for any party.

Well...bye.

bogger...I hate to break it to you...but being allowed to "buy health insurance outside of Maine" will not save any money to Mainers because the CEOs of the insurance companies pay themselves millions of dollars in bonuses left and right...above and beyond their outrageous pay. The US's health care costs are far higher than anywhere in the world and we aren't getting better health care. You go to the doctor's office or lord forbid the emergency department of a hospital or walk in clinic and you can sit there for hours only to get a sloppy and rushed visit. The health care costs are so high in this country because there are SO MANY people who are uninsured. They go to the emergency dept. and can't pay their bills and have no insurance and those costs get passed on to everyone else. Having a public option will FORCE the insurance companies to focus on bringing costs down instead of lining their already bulging pockets with more cash at your expense. I'm not a fan of forcing people to get insurance, but I'm a huge fan of the idea of making medicaid accessible to ALL who want it and let them pay on a sliding scale based on their income. Cover Seniors with Medicaid too so they actually get their medicines paid for so no elderly people have to choose between paying rent, eating or buying their needed medicines. Seriously...some of you folks on here really need to stop listening to political pundits on tv and radio and look things up yourselves and form your own opinions based on facts and not the opinions of a bunch of overpaid and undertalented blowhards. :p

I agree. I said the exact same thing about Sarah Palin.

my grandfather represented the republican party for 60 years of his life, and 35 of those years in Augusta, and back in the late 80s or early 90s, Augusta voted down a 10 cent minimum wage increase, while at the same time voting in a raise for themselves. Due to this my grandfather switched parties mid-term. He, after several terms of in-activity, ran for re-election as a democrat of district 132, now in his 80s, and won! Goes to show, no matter the affiliation, if you do, as a representative of the people, the will of the people you represent, people will respect, and admire you. I say great job, Representative Campbell!

I shudder at the thought of anyone being elected under a certain party having to follow the will of that party or get out. I do not elect by party line, I elect the person I feel will do the best possible job. I applaud Rep. Campbell for showing that he does not support the way the Republican party has tried to torpedoe any real reform. All other first world countries have healthcare as a right, not a privelege.

militaryman: well said, I too vote for the candidate and not for the party. My dad was a state rep back in the 60's and I probably wouldn't have supported many of his pet projects ( Democrat ). Support a government of the people not of the parties.

Coldbarnocker, militaryman: right on!

The constant rap by "party line" critics (allegedly old-time "independent" Mainers) makes one think they should go back to civics class. Strict adherance to THE PARTY LINE only occurs in countries with the Parlimentary System of government (Canada, most of Europe, etc.). In those countries, those elected by one party MUST toe the party line or face retribution. Thank goodness, it usually isn't that way (or shouldn't be that way) in this country. Like the posters cited above, I've always voted for the person, not the party.

Voting strictly party line is stupid. One fellow told another who votes only party line,"Good thing Hitler isnt running for your party,or you would vote him in"!

I called Campbell once to ask why he was the ONLY Republican to vote for a ludicrous Dem-sponsored bill............and he flipped out. Totally LOST it.

He is not quite right.

We're ecstatic that he's not stinking up our party anymore, but I mean....what's up with you people in Newfield????
