Golden Globe snubs

Golden Globe snubs

Is there only room for one sci-fi best picture?

Which of your favorite films or performances of 2009 were overlooked by the Golden Globes (and potentially will be overlooked by the Oscars)?  Here are my thoughts:

The Best Picture-Drama choices leave out the equally impressive sci-fi film "District 9" in favor of "Avatar."  Is there only one science fiction spot available when most years have historical dramas or character driven indies receiving 2 or 3 of the possible 5 slots?  This is a major oversight for a well-respected picture by audiences and critics.

Best Picture-Comedy should have included "The Proposal," especially since Sandra Bullock received a nod for Best Actress in a Comedy.  The zombie comedy "Zombieland" should have also been a strong contender, as should Disney's "The Princess & the Frog" (despite the fact it received a nomination in the animation section).

Cameron Diaz was grossly overlooked as the overbearing but affectionate mother in "My Sister's Keeper," as a nominee in the Best Actress in a Drama category.  Amy  Adams deserved a best actress in a comedy nomination as Amelia Earhart in "Night at the Museum 2," especially when a slot went to Julia Roberts in the awful "Duplicity."

Perhaps Johnny Depp deserved a nomination for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in "Public Enemies" or Sharlto Copley in "District 9"?  How about the performances of Zachary Quinto as Spock in "Star Trek" or Jackie Earle Haley (Rorsach) or Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian) in "Watchmen"?  Maybe a best supporting actor nod for one of these guys?

Lastly, how about considering J.J. Abrams's contributions as director for making "Star Trek" exciting again or a nomination for "District 9" 's able filmmaker?

While overall the Golden Globe list is relatively fair; these are places where there is room for a differing of opinion.

Glad to hear you folks finally won your battle to see The Road. I was fortunate to be at the premier in LA and had a chance to talk with Viggo for a bit at the gala in his honor. He truly doesn't care about awards for himself, but in my opinion, if he doesn't get nominated for the Man, I give up on awards shows period. Anyway, I have now seen the film 6 times, and it breaks my heart and makes me love the human race every single time. The Weinsteins lack the courage of their convictions. This film should be everywhere. Instead of putting in on the back burner, they should move it up front and put it in peoples' faces. It's the most important film since Apocalypse Now, and it will change your life and haunt you for months, maybe forever. Enjoy, if that's the right word.

Thanks for your thoughts on "The Road." I hope to see the picture shortly after the holidays, if it is still available at Railroad Square Cinema or (finally) comes to a Bangor area cinema. Until I see it, I'll have to wait on giving my thoughts about Viggo's performance.

I hope to see "The Road" too here in the Bangor area (or close) or will have to wait till it comes out on DVD. I also really really want to see the movie "Crazy Hearts" with Jeff Bridges (Oscar buzz already) and one of my favorites, Maggie Gullenhal (spelling?? There is, I think, a "y" in there somewhere! Too much egg nog tonight, I guess!!) So many movies...not enough time! "Crazy Hearts" is also likely to be another difficult movie to find showing in the Bangor area!!

Keep an eye out at the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville for "Crazy Hearts," as well as "The Road." If both were showing in Waterville, it might be worth the drive for such a double feature. RR Sq Cinema's web address can be found in one of my prior posts.
